Rumour – Silicon Knights staff cut by 75%

Troubled Canadian developer Silicon Knights is said to have been hit by “massive layoffs”.

1UP cites two independent anonymous sources for the rumours, which have a team of 97 reduced to just 25.

The studio’s entire HR department is said to have been cut, including the wife of Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack.

In July, Silicon Knights announced its intention to expand, adding 80 more positions to its existing staff of nearly 100, on the back of a CDN $3 million government grant.

The developer is best known for the 2008 release Too Human, which suffered an extended and controversy-plagued development period and went down like a lead balloon. Its latest effort, X-Men: Destiny, has not met with much acclaim.

    Oh common this Worthless Studio had it coming with all of their promises first it was TooHuman and it was Horribly dull than i hear an x-men game is coming i pre-order and these bastards all over again dont allow the game to be reviewed until after we find out its a waste of Time!

    Dark Legions and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain were two of my favorite titles of the mid-90s. It’s a shame Dyack went totally insane.

    I wouldn’t think so.
    Media and gamers hyped too human and Silicon tit Knights added more fire to the fuel, or is it the other way round.

    The sue battle with them and Epic is still going on.
    Apparently they are trying to blame Unreal Engine 3 for the game looking bad.

    Graphic is not even the problem it’s the gameplay.

    In fact when I tried the demo, it played good. I just didn’t like the way you control it.

    Because Silcon Knights had used a different engine after trying to make it with Unreal because they claimed that Unreal was too buggy yet Bioware made Mass Effect with it. They are pushing their problems on the engine and not on themselves for not adapting with the times.

    A bad workman always blames his tools? Im sure jumping into bed with the villans at activision didn’t help either. Poor show, Silicon Knights and quality used to go hand in hand last gen.

    After the horrible X-Men Destiny, it was inevitable. Seriously, that game was beyond bad. I’m still trying to find the reason how SK made that. It was on par with Iron Man movie game and in parts, worse than that!

    I figured it was only a matter of time before SK hit the wall, they’ve released very little this generation and the games they have released have been fairly badly received. A shame, because there are (or were) obviously some very talented people there. Good luck to everyone who’s looking for a new job today.
