Battlefield 3 PS3 and Xbox 360 reviews go live for US launch

Reviews for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Battlefield 3 have started to hit, after PC reviews for the shooter went live yesterday.

Out in the US today, folks in Europe can get their hands on it Thursday, while UK folks will get it Friday.

Some sites have yet to post a review yet, as some said their review copies arrived late in the post.

As usual, if you have any more to add, please post a link in the comments section.

It’ll be interesting to see if the MP being limited to a smaller number of players on consoles pushes reviewers to put more of a focus on the games SP (which from seeing a few of the PC reviews, is apparently a bit weak).

I bet if this exact game had Call of Duty in the title, I bet it would get 9s or 10s

@6 Three letters guarantee an awesome review and score: C, O and D, or G, T and A.

This is soooooooo predictable.

Console players will be busy playing kickass consoles-only games, not to mention exclusives.

But what MS have to offer next year? Another Halo?

@9
Maybe if DICE put as much effort into their SP as those games they’d higher scores.

@11, you didn’t played SP from Battlefield 3 so you can’t judge. It’s much better than anything this year and will come from FPS games (except for Portal 2 if you can count this as FPS).

the only thing that it is short and story is ok.

Well why would a game that doesn’t look as good, or play as smooth as Its pc version, score the same?

@Yoshi, well if you read the Eurogamer reveiw, it has a almost exact same sp as CoD… Though not quite as good. Though the MP is superb.

And Gekidami has a fair point with GTA :)

GTA games get good ratings because they are friggin awesome games and they aren’t made every 12 months like a CoD.

If u looked at Black Ops reviews they weren’t stellar (I.e: 9 / 10 or above) they were 8s or slightly higher, not a massive difference but it’s enough of a difference in my eyes.

The console versions of this won’t get brilliant reviews. Which is a shame. It does look great though but as we get closer to release date I find myself going off buying it. Moreso for MW3.

if it wasnt the hyped bf3, it wouldve been rated a 70+ score, just like the other buggy shooters, brink and Homefront

“The single player campaign isn’t quite as great as Black Ops’s story” GamingXP

“Battlefield 3 may not be the absolute powerhouse I desired; as it still suffers from some irritating glitches and a mediocre campaign”
Planet Xbox 360

that pretty much sums it up :)

No, Im not trolling and YES this is my “own” opinion…

Not as great as black ops story?

LOL.

It must be a 100% fail then, because everything about black ops’ campaign was complete and utter crap, much like the MP.

anyway Im not gonna complain, this ur opinion and Im gonna act like Im cool with it :grrr: xD

“The single-player campaign is not something I’d recommend starting with if first impressions are important to you. It’s a lifeless collection of corridor stages that hold you by the hand and often treat you like more of a bystander than a participant. You’re surrounded by invincible squad mates who do most of the work while you’re stuck looking for the one bit of cover that actually is cover and doesn’t exist as an aesthetic prop for the A.I. partners to use. ”

I’m not that surprised at the solid but not stellar reviews tbh. Don’t believe it to be schadenfreude on the part of reviewers but the sheer volume of hype and expectation was too much for any game to live up to.

I enjoyed the BF:BC games’ singleplayer antics, building a decent set of characters but wasn’t expecting to be as entertained in this. Looks like that’s the way it will be. It’s not going to put me off the SP though, and as normal, I’ll try that first though I dread to think what my wife will make of me if I succumb to my COD4/BFBC2 levels of addiction….

Might be here tomorrow? Would be nice to be on doorstep when I return from a Gamecity day out!

The game itself scale very well on any PC hardware configuration! Check the forum I created for this game here http://www.vg247.com/forum/topic.php?page=1&id=5172#post-28122

I’ve put a link there to builds your own PC without spending thousand of dollar just to try what next-gen would feel 2 years earlier! This game deserve to be played on PC just to see how much achievement DICE have reach!

All in all im really impressed. The good old battlefield multiplayer-experience got expired with a pretty good singleplayer campaign. The graphical and soundeffects are pure stunning like the deep atmosphere. This is the way, player wants to play a shooter.

I’m actually surprised to find that I’d rather play the sp from cod than bf3. It’s not even the story (or lack of one +both games) as much as the execution. #20′s d’toid quote sums it up really well, as does the eg review.

@29 In reality, nobody really gives a flying fuck about the single player in any Battlefield. Ever. It’s not what the game is about.

Personally, they could give me just the multiplayer disc and I would be perfectly content with the experience.

Seems a certain fanboy is butthurt because his little kindergarten franchise isn’t as loved as he wants it to be.

That’s okay young man, you can come play with the big boys in a few years if you want. *pats head*

I don’t think the PC games did. BF2:MC on consoles did – it was rubbish – though it did have some interesting challenge modes. Both the Bad Companies did. BF:BC1 had a fantastic near free form approach to missions, BF:BC2 and BF3 have progressively moved towards CoD controlled tunnel shooters with “spectacular” set pieces and as a result become worse.

The most revealing thing of course, is when you open the 360 box, Disc One is ‘Multiplayer’ and Disc Two is ‘Single-Player’.

That made me chuckle, but at least it made me comfortable in the knowledge that DICE knows where it’s priorities lie :)

@35 well, for dice everybody says “it doesnt matter, at least they make a good multiplayer experience” and “dice knows where its priorities lie”

but when IW and 3arc make everything PERFECT except for the graphics u bitch about it “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT IS SO 2006 WE WANT SOMETHING NEW”

damn u fanboys :D

“but when IW and 3arc make everything PERFECT except for the graphics u bitch about it “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT IS SO 2006 WE WANT SOMETHING NEW”

Not really.

I enjoy CoD a fair bit and I am very much looking forward to MW3 when I pick up my copy at midnight from my local store.

I’m merely addressing the fact that I find it comical that despite DICE’s promises to the contrary, the single-player portion of BF3 is indeed the red-headed stepchild of the whole affair and the disc labelling is merely amusing because of this fact.

Again, like many others have said, I play Battlefield for it’s multiplayer and not the single-player. Yes, whilst you could easily make the argument that it isn’t such a strongly well-rounded product as CoD, my enjoyment of the BF multiplayer playstyle makes just about everything else irrelevant to me.

It’s all fine and dandy about the SP from these reviews. There’s also a few reviews who actually say the sp is near perfect. My brother loved the campaign, said it indeed feels like COD at times in terms of story but it does everything so much better. Thanks to the awesome first person actor and camera views and everything.

People should play the game first before judging.

@Gekidami, Majority of reviews say it’s not “Call Of Duty” or it’s not surprising.

If you think that Call Of Duty is the pinnacle of singleplayer campaigns or Michael Bay is a great inspiration for military shooters, than woop di doop there is nothing to say more.

I finished Battlefield 3. It’s a solid campaign which does not try to freak out something. You do basic things what military should do and thats where they aimed at.
the only problem that is the story is pretty much at the basic level, but it’s much better than anything in military FPS games have ever done this year.

#41

I rarely play any shooters these days for the SP. I play both CoD and BF3 for the MP only. If I had to pick the one that I thought had a better SP, it would go to CoD. But then BF3 looks amazing and is in another league with regards to graphics.

Both games have great MP for different reasons. One has huge maps and vehicles, another has fast paced twitch shooter action. They are both good games. People that try to deny either one are just being straight up dumber than dumb can be.

Spot on.

The fact that certain BF fanboys are now also claiming that the SP is irrelevant, having attacked the CoD SP for years on end, is even more hilarious.

|military FPS games have ever done this year.

I mean this seriously – what other military FPS games have there been this year?

Also, I wonder if DICE just stuck in MW2 or Blops campaign, would people still be saying “the campaign is pretty good actually”.
I think people’s blind love of anything that’s not CoD is getting in the way of objectivity.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River, and you could possibly argue, Homefront.

Although, while I might be wrong, I doubt that the MW2 addict has played either of them…

@42, You didn’t said it, i said it because reviewers use Call OF duty as the example for what DICE tried to achieve when DICE never tried to achieve this from the start because it is it’s own campaign since Bad company 1. They are doing it’s own thing.

It’s much slower than CoD campaign.

@Fin, “I mean this seriously – what other military FPS games have there been this year?”

shitty Homefront, Operation:Flashpoint:Red river, ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead, Global Ops: Commando Libya (TPS), SOCOM 4 (TPS).

“Also, I wonder if DICE just stuck in MW2 or Blops campaign, would people still be saying “the campaign is pretty good actually”.”

of course not.

I know for sure that people are praising CoD4 campaign because there were really good moments such as a “sniper level in Pripyat”
and in my opinion it was a solid campaign without bullshit moments with interesting and epic scenes.
+ some moments felt very fresh for it’s time.

Call of duty 1 in my opinion had the best campaign in all CoD series. It was awesome.

@33 I really liked the approach they took for single player in Bad Company 1. They had some really good ideas with that one, and it always felt very free and open.

It’s a pity they never kept that formula. While the single player is completely irrelevant to me, there’s no denying how weak it is.

@34 Modern Warfare 1′s campaign was really strong in my opinion. It still has the best pacing, variety and set pieces in the entire franchise, in my opinion. The boat section still remains my favourite opening of the whole series.

Your assumptions of my opinion of the Call of Duty franchise are sadly misinformed, I’m afraid.

I do and have enjoyed numerous games in the franchise in the past. My problem lies with the almost stagnant nature the franchise has taken on in recent years. It’s stuck in the past.
