Battlefield 3′s Online Pass confirmed

A DICE staffer has revealed that Battlefield 3 will indeed use an Online Pass system.

Responding to a fan question on Twitter, gameplay designer Alan Kertz confirmed that only copies of the game purchased new will include full access to its multiplayer.

“You can also purchase an online pass for a used copy,” he said.

Asked why users have to pay to play a second hand game, Kertz responded:

“Because servers cost money, and used games don’t make developers any money.”

The move is not unexpected as executive producer Patrick Bach had dropped strong hints – and because EA has implemented Online pass systems in most recent high profile releases.

EA has expressed its delight in the system’s modest returns, which it describes as “found revenue”.

Battlefield 3 releases on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 at the end of the month.

People who complain about an online pass are annoying. Why does it matter if you have to pay an extra $10 if you buy it used? Are you that cheap to not support your hobby? Like come on.

it’s sort of relieving that this only applies to console gamers, since most PC games are filled with so many types of drm, that the major gamestores have stopped buying used copies for PCs.

Well the PC version has a thing called a “serial key” which you can’t just buy online if you get the game used.

You can’t sell PC games used… you never could. Not since… 1997? Serial keys changed everything.

Personally I think used game sales should be illegal. People talk about how piracy takes money away from developers on the PC. The same could be said about used game sales on the console. IE…

Piracy is equal to Used Games. The only difference is that you unfortunate console gamers actually have to pay to play a game that you could have gotten for free.
