Quick Quotes: THQ CFO on recent studio closures
“We think the best position we can be in with respect to studio structure is fewer is better. The two we just shut in Australia were working on games that aren’t consistent with our strategy anymore – one on a movie tie-in, one on a kids’ game. Our strategy now is bringing fewer, bigger triple-A titles to market: one or two original IPs each year, and sequelling them every two to two-and-a-half years. We’re trying to reduce the cost of bringing high quality games to market. Our studio in Montreal will grow from 150 to 400 employees in the next couple of years. We’re going to be able to make games there for 40 percent less than some of our other studios.” – THQ CFO Paul Pucino speaking at the Citi Global Technology Conference.

Judgement: EA within First Amendment rights to use ex-Rutgers QB image in NCAA Football
A US district court judge has dismissed a case against EA which was brought against the firm by ex-Rutgers University quarterback Ryan Hart. Hart accused EA of using his image in NCAA Football without his expressed permission. The judge said EA was well within its First Amendment rights of free expression, which outweighed Hart’s ability to control the use of both his name and likeness. EA’s lawyer issued a statement saying she and EA were both pleased with the outcome, which “validates Electronic Arts’ rights to create and publish its expressive works.” Another lawsuit pending against EA, from Arizona and Cleveland players, is still on the docket, but since both suits were filed for the same reason as Hart’s, it looks as though these may end up being dismissed as well. Smuggler progression video released for SWTOR
Bioware has released a progression video for the Smuggler class in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Those choosing to play the class in the game, will need to rely on “wit and guile just as much as the blaster at his side.” According to the description, as the Smuggler’s bounty grows, so does the danger posed by enemies. You saw what happened to Han – he was frozen in carbonite, ya know. However, the Smuggler will acquire new skills and “utilize more powerful weapons and armor” as he progresses, not only in order to gain advantage over his enemies, but also “to survive.” Check out the video for the class below.
