In completely unsurprising news, Legendary Pictures has confirmed that yes, the Mass Effect movie will be all about Commander Shepard. Toys “R” Us has released its annual Holiday Hot Toy List for 2011, and out of the 36 items that will the most popular this season and have parents getting in fist fights over, the only video game to make the list was Activision’s Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.

Square Enix’s Lord of Apocalypse, a successor to Lord of Arcana, is in development from Access Games with Deadly Premonition designer Hidetaka Suehiro signed on to direct, it has been announced. The game, announced just before TGS will be made available for PSP and Vita on December 17 in Japan. It has not been announced for release in North America or Europe. Capcom has confirmed to Kotaku Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a shoe-in for a late 2011 release, but instead “definitely locked in,” for a winter release. Winter, for the seasonally challenged, starts December 22, 2011 and ends on March 19, 2012 – meaning to expect it sometime before the Vernal Equinox, but not before the Winter Solstice.

“This is a hits-based business; if you’re at the top of the charts, you can be very successful, but if you’re in the middle of the charts, you’re likely to lose money. And the bets are getting bigger and bigger, so most independent studios can’t afford multiple “not hits” in a row. We’re lucky to have some stability from our engine technology business, and even luckier to have had great success in multiple platforms and genres.” – Epic president Mike Capps on the challenge of remaining independent to Forbes.

Level-5 has released the TGS trailer for Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright. It’s posted below. The game hasn’t been announced for release outside of Japan just yet, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed information pertaining to the possibility will be provided during Level 5 World Event in Tokyo on October 15-16. Game’s out in 2012 on 3DS in Japan.

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley believes subscription-only MMOs will soon be a thing of the past as more go free-to-play. Furthermore, he predicts Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the last one of its kind to adopt the business model at launch.

Microsoft has put out a list of games coming to or already out on Xbox Live Marketplace. One of those out today on the list is Resident Evil 4 HD through GoD, and it’s out today in the US on PSN as well.

Sony has announced PS3 system software update, v3.72, us out. Calling it a “minor update,” the firm said it provides system stability during “use of PS3 format software and network services.” It will take around 10 minutes to download. The last update, firmware 3.70, streamlined the PS Plus subscriber-exclusive automatic download and cloud save features, among other things.

Thanks to spatial reasoning skills and a competitive gaming program called Foldit, gamers have helped scientists produce an online model of a retrovirus protein which could help design a new AIDS drug.
