New Mortal Kombat game and film in 2013

A new Mortal Kombat movie by the director of the recent web series is on the way - alongside a new game.

The LA Times reports the new film is a partnership between two Warner Bros labels - New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Kevin Tancharoen, whose leaked fan-film trailer netted him an official commission to produce the promotional web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, will direct the new movie.

The script is to be written by Tancheroen's offsider Oren Uziel and expected to release in tandem with a new Mortal Kombat game in 2013.

"The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about," New Line president Toby Emmerich said.

New Line was involved in the production of two Mortal Kombat films in the mid to late 90's, but efforts to reboot the franchise before now had been stymied by ongoing litigation with producer Lawrence Kasanoff.
