Deus Ex: Human Revolution mod pulls the gold filter, makes the game look better

Friday, 23rd September 2011 12:30 GMT By Alex Donaldson

Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s black-and-gold colour scheme was a very deliberate design decision on the part of the team at Eidos Montreal – but fans have already modified it out of the PC version of the hit title.

You’d think modifying something so fundamental to the game’s art style would damage the experience, but the end result of the mod is surprising.

The gold filter has been removed whilst other subtle changes have been made to the game’s lighting, smoke effects and colour depth. The end result is a game that’s a significant clip prettier than the one you get off the disc when you first install.

The downside of the mod? You’ll have to have a pretty beastly PC in order to run this smoothly. If you can run it without kneecapping the game’s frame rate, though, this is an amazing way to – wait for it – augment – your Deus Ex: Human Revolution experience.

There’s full comparison shots of the mod against the regular game and less rubbish puns over on PC Gamer.

Don’t think you can call it subtle changes when ENBSeries is trying to integrate new dynamic shadows. That’s probably not in this version for now.

I also like the gold filter. Granted it gets a little bit over the top sometimes, but it’s part of the art-direction and i respect it very much. Still curious though, which is why i’ll download it when i get home.

This is partly why PC gaming will always win over the consoles.

In the ’90s it was green (Ghost in the shell/ Bladerunner/ Matrix/ Unreal/-Tournament) I somehow liked that style very much. Don’t know, if I’m just getting old.
In the last unnamed century ’00s, it was orange/gold (Ghost in the Shell 2, Deus Ex Human Revolution)
I like that color scheme pretty much too and wonder, which color scheme comes next…
The atmosphere often feels like MGS4 in a Ghost in the Shell/Bladerunner Setting.

The director of Ghost in the Shell 2 even talked about it’s changes in color schemes and that green looked futuristic in the ’90s, while orange/gold is modern for now.

@7, i don’t remember Ghost in the shell had this gold thing.

UT? also, i don’t remember about that gold thing.

But Deus Ex:HR really have that MGs atmosphere sometimes.

@8 Read carefully. GITS 1 (’90s) was green, GITS2(last century) was gold
The director from GITS talks about this topic himself in the bonus features of GITS2.
and Matrix or UT(’90s) had a green color scheme, too.
Sry, if i wrote it mistakable.

Btw: “Still, i want to try it once DLC will come out.” It’s not going to be a DLC. It’s a fan made mod, which you will be able to install on the PC version of DeusEx:HR.

@7 I don’t remember a “green filter” in Blade Runner, altough I’d like to differetiate more:

First part of the ’90s: Blue
Second part of the ’90s: Green
    The ’00s: Gray and Brown
First part of the ’10s: Black and Gold

@10: Yea you are right. That might be because Bladerunner comes from the 80s.
But gold is a typical color for the ’00s. Look at Ghost in the Shell 2:

“Better” is subjective, I like the gold filter. Adds a moody mysteriouse atmosphere to the game.

@5: They never tried to make it look like a DX game. It’s their vision.
