Also vanquish is great, but without Japanese companies trying to ape western style games it would have never seen the light of day, it has gears to thank for that.

I have no problem with your summery and dislike of gears you gave earlier, it would have been more helpful if you mentioned some of those things in your first criticism though.

You seem to pick and choose when to ignore the concept of discussion when it suits you. If you make statements you generate feedback generally, to then act as if you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone is the forum equivalent of acting like a spoilt brat.

@108: I’m not. If it’s all about the gameplay, why is there even a story? Why are there characters and miserable attempt to add depth to them? Why are they trying (and failing) to add drama to whole thing?

The initial point was supposed to more about the quality of reviews these days, a topic I’ve been discussing recently as my girlfriend has just started writing for a video games website so we’ve been discussing scoring and layout etc…

The only beef I have is I can’t stand sweeping statements and find it hard not to question someone’s reasoning, I’m sure I would just go crazy if I commented on here regularly!

Eurogamer is a respected gaming site, and I’ve just found there reviews somewhat lacking in recent times, they are just starting to sound quite jaded really and seem to have forgotten the games are supposed to be fun!

Multiplayer in the second game was terrible, I got a feeling they literally had no idea what they’re doing; it was so unbalanced it’s not funny. Everyone was using nothing but chainsaws, it was just painfully depressing and frustrating.

@113, “Last Day” was the one for me. Great music selection in pretty much all the ads.

Just feel if someone’s put years of work into something and even created the engine it’s running on it deserves a bit more respect thats all!

@119 Because 1) Vanquish never, ever claims to take itself even remotely seriously (Are those tears I see, Dom?!), and 2) its gameplay, the core mechanics that hold the whole thing together… aren’t shit.

All these pro-Vanquish comments are making me think I was mabey too hard on it when I played the demo…

@122: Dunno, the whole conspiracy plot that didn’t really make any sense let me to believe otherwise. Also the last fight when Macho-Leader-Marine was dying was trying to be dramatic.

I also thought the gameplay suffered from the bland art-direction and boring weapons.

Hint: Vanquish isn’t meant to be played like Gears of War.

@127: Disagree. The difference is that you’re boost-sliding from cover-to-cover.

I actually think that the gameplay didn’t really work. The sliding was awesome, but i think the gameplay should’ve made the CQC the core of the gameplay. Shooting was not fun in the game, unless you were slide-shooting.

Things keeps getting better and better, next month we got Arkham City. Can’t wait.

You have to question the logic of printing that “review”. The guy basically says that he didn’t like Gears 1 and 2 because he didn’t like the story, and it was too ‘macho’ for him, so why in the world is he ‘reviewing’ the third game?

To say that a video game is bad because the characters aren’t believable enough is nothing short of ridiculous.

I really wanted to get this at launch but my live sub just ran out and I’ve been unable to find an acceptable price for renewal. Too many good games coming out to waste cash on a live sub, it basically costs a game to buy, and right now I’d rather buy one of the 6 or 7 AAA games coming to pc in the next 2 months than live.

There’s a pretty big difference between story and suspension of disbelief though. A designer is perfectly capable of creating his own coherent world, and we’ll buy it if it’s done well enough, without worrying too much about the science or logic of it.

Equally so, some games try to go deep on the stories, whereas others just use them as a function to advance the gameplay. I like both personally.

I always thought Gears of War was a little too derivative. There’s just too much of “random aliens meet random space marines” these days. If the aliens had a personality beyond just “ugly and mean”, that might be interesting, but it’s way too samey for me.
