Good game and although deeply flawed in places I’d still say it’s not one you should miss out on.

Can’t wait, seems a little mixed but generally positive & I quite frankly wasn’t expecting a good story/dialogue etc in a zombie game.

I’m generally quite a shallow chap all things told. Thusly, the idea of watching XP pop up on my screen after I eviscerate a zombie, greatly excites me.
That said, i’m also a tightwad and will likely wait it out until the inevitable £14.99/£17.99 price point.

Bah, this and Space Marine on the same weekend… I think Space Marine is my first priority but I will probably crumble and get this too. What platform are people planning on getting this for, if they are that is?
However, I just read the Eurogamer review and part of me is thinking this will be a sale purchase. I will check out more reviews during my lunch.

@19 & 20, What platforms you guys getting the games on?
I’m probably going to go with the 360 for Space Marine and I’m kinda leaning towards PC for Dead Island, if I get it at all.
Space Marine will most likely have to be the 360 because I’m just not a huge fan of competitive MP on the PC. Co-op modes I’m cool with on the PC, plus it will be cheaper.

I’ll be getting Space Marine on PC & Dead Island on PS3. You just can’t buy a W40K game for a console, it’s heresy!

@ 23, I was mainly going console because there is no UK Steam release for SM, which is annoying. I might pick it up from another DD though.

In Short: Nothing like the game implied by the trailer and an only occasionally interesting, and obviously low budget, attempt to marry Dead Rising with Fallout.
Pros: Large game world with lots of content (and zombies), and a good sense of permanent danger. Online co-op can be fun with friends.
Cons: Combat and controls are sub-standard and most of the role-playing elements are pretty simplistic. Very weak graphics, dialogue and voice-overs.
Score: 5/10

Gamecentral always seem quite harsh with their reviews, though.

@28: “Nothing like the game implied by the trailer” So? Don’t remember Halo: ODST being Saving Private Ryan in Space.

Why are people expecting the game to be anything like the CG trailer? It didnt even look like it was trying to emulate what the gameplay would be like.

^ Yeah you’d think years of Final Fantasy/Metal Gear Solid trailers would of taught people by now that what you see in that FMV advert is never going to be what you actually get in game *bitter fucking tears*

The Co-optimus review stated a few features which I think are awesome, most notable is:
“The game even lets you create a new copy of your character at a matching level of a friend’s game and then you can save that in a separate slot.”
More devs need to include this feature in similar games. It makes playing with people who aren’t intending to purchase on day 1 much easier.

What people have been complaining about is that the trailer was thematicly different to what the game actually is. That is usually not the case with games, not even with Halo or MGS. In those cases the trailer showed a more pretty version of the game, but still consistant in terms of story and action and implied gameplay.
Dead Island initially showed a verry strong story driven game, a game that took a more believable emotional and survival mentality to a zombie apocolypse.
Then the gameplay hit and it turned out to be a first person slasher game, something completly different. That is what caused the shift between expectation and reality.
A more apt comparison would be like Halo running a war game trailer and then launching a third person adventure game. Leaving everybody wondering; “Wait, I thought we would be shooting aliens in this one??”
But all this has been coverd a million times over and no longer really matters. Although considering the diminished hype, the trailer might have backfired.

The developers admitted barely a weak after the trailer was released that the it was not indicative of the thematic story-telling of the game. I’ve known this for months, so I don’t know why people are suddenly surprised by this.

Anyone that thinks a CG trailer showing off a game in anyway, needs to get their head examined. Look at all CG trailers not a single one shows the truth about the actual game. Examples: FFXIII, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Dead Island, Deus Ex, the list goes on.

What’s not to like about an attempt to marry Fallout with Dead Rising though? That sounds a lot better than Fallout on its own.
I’m seeing a few smart people writing good things about it on the interweb, and Dan Whitehead gave it a 6, which pretty much means that smart people will like it, and idiots will give it a 6.
I’ll certainly give it a go at a sale down the road.

Dead Island isn’t quite not the fantastic game the players worldwide have been anticipating for years, but it is a solid survival horror game, with a nice 4 player coop mode, a lot of upgradable weapons and a cool skill system. If you like to kill zombies, zombies and zombies in an open world, then Dead Island is your game!
