Mojang sketches outline of Scrolls economy
Scrolls, the next game from Minecraft developer Mojang, will be multi-platform, and feature subscription, microtransaction, and virtual currency options.
Speaking to PAX attendees in a Q&A session helpfully uploaded to Youtube, designer Jakob Porser said the game will release on multiple platforms, and players will be able to sign in to a persistant identity and collection from any format – including in-browser. Following an initial layout, players can sign up for an optional subscription, which delivers a new package of scrolls each month.
Although new scrolls will also be available for individual purchase, they can be obtained by other, non-financial means, including winning ranked matches.
Unwanted scrolls can be sold through an auction house for in-game currency, and the ability for scrolls to be levelled up – something Porser says is tricky to balance despite a ranking system – will add to their value.
Pricing hasn’t been settled yet, but although Porser said making the initial game free-to-play would undermine the economy – thanks to the ability to auction off content – he wasn’t expecting to charge “a whole lot of money”.
Regarding tournaments, Porser said Mojang is considering allowing players to set up their own ranked tournaments to allow for local leagues and friendly groups.
