Skyrim developer discusses Xbox 360 graphics, scale

Bethesda’s Todd Howard has explained what the Skyrim development team did to make the Xbox 360 version of The Elder Scrolls V look better on the console than previous titles from the firm.

Speaking in a developer diary posted below, courtesy of TheGamerXperience, Howard talks about the various development changes the team implemented in order for the game to look and feel as epic as its size.

“We’ve pretty much rewritten all the graphics and the gameplay system, as well as used a new face system and interface system, ” said Howard. “And we knew coming off of Fallout 3 on the Xbox 360, that there was a lot we could still do to really harness the power of it. There is just this unlimited amount of detail we put into the world, from little things like forks and berries to mountains and dragons.

“We want all of that scale on the screen at once, and that’s kind of the trickiest thing for us to pull off, but it’s ended up really nice.”

Howard goes on to say that Bethesda is “thankful that people have taken,” to the kind of games the firm creates because they are” “big crazy things that we enjoy, and not a lot of people don’t make them, so the fact that they’ve been successful allows us to keep doing it, so that is really rewarding.”

Skyrim is out on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on November 11, and the first two DLC releases will hit Xbox 360 first for a 30-day period.

Not sure there was a 40 min video of it on youtube from Quakecon and they also demo’d Skyrim and it looked impressive even for the 360.

Wonder how it’ll look on the PS3 though. Bethesda made Oblivion look and run 10x better, but they had a whole year to make it as good as possible.
