InSANE to be a Lovecraftian sandbox

The Hobbit, Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro has spilled a few details on his upcoming, THQ-published horror trilogy, inSANE.

Although the games are still in the very early stages, Volition has a basic framework in place.

“We had to build a sandbox, so we designed all the architecture already,” del Toro told MTV Multiplayer.

Although the director has little time to spare, he said the project is getting “proper attention”, and that the games, still a good few years off, are “worth it”.

“We’ve been working for a year. We have two or three more years to go. It’s huge,” he said.

“I’m a huge gamer but going into constructing it, you have to be respectful of the medium. I’m learning a lot. Talking about the storyline for weeks. We’ve been designing the creatures, which are obscenely fun and unique. You haven’t seen them ever.”

He went on to say the game is “truly, truly entertaining”, “full of action, but also a very shocking game”, and featuring monster designs from Guy David, “one of the best monster designers alive right now.”

Del Toro had been attached to a planned Universal Pictures production of HP Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, but pulled out when the studio refused to greenlight his R18+ rated horror – in inSANE, he may get his chance to explore theElder Things mythos.

“It’s Lovecraftian, it’s really weird, but it’s Lovecraftian in a very sick way, which I like,” Del Toro said.

Thanks, 1UP.

The concept of a “Lovecraftian sandbox” makes me all tingly. They’d better not stuff this up!

I wonder if it’ll end up on the next-gen consoles given the amount of time it’s taking?

I guess this might actually be a half decent replacement for Mountains of Madness seeing as that will never be made.

That game was beyond awesome. If InSane is only half as crazy and awesome as that… sold.
