Quick Quotes: Bethesda’s Todd Howard on the price of games
“I’ve thought for a long time that games are too expensive. I don’t put us in that category of course – for what we give you, for sixty bucks or however many ‘quid’ it is. That’s a lot of money for entertainment, so I think the good news is that in certain markets- PC, iPhone, mobile – we can see prices coming down. But I do think industry-wide we would benefit from more games out at $19 or $29. I would try more games. Because I’m not going to try a game for $60. It’s a tough decision. That’s why people read reviews and previews, because it’s not only a money decision, it’s a time-investment decision. It’s not like going to a movie.” – Bethesda’s Todd Howard to PSM3 on why not all games should cost $60. Thanks, D’toid.

“Games are too expensive! …Except for ours, ours are totally worth that 60 bucks.”
Seems that not practising what you preach is becoming a popular sport amongst game devs.

I have to agree though. Not all games are worth $60. Some are, though. And to be fair, I would prob pay $god for a Elder Scrolls game anyway – and I say that out of sheer obsessive fandom. Just being honest.

I think he has a point, iam a firm believer that games should have a band with a high price and a low price, or a chart that will depend on the game and its features like having or not multiplayer, co-op, multiple endings, single player duration, etc, therefore developers should price their game acording with the standards for each feature, but maybe this is an unpractical and crazy idea, ***shrugs***

So I guess Bethesda are willing to refund us half on Brink and New Vegas?

My last Bethesda game that was worth 60$ was Morrowind (and it’s addons).
Maybe bugfest like New Vegas…
but thats it.

He’s got a point, I can only afford 2 games a month @ absolute best, I’ve already preordered Saints Row: The Third, next pay I’ll preorder Warhammer 40000: Space Marine.
Then there’s WWE ’12, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Dead Island, Assassins Creed Revelations, Battlefield 3, Resistance 3 & much more.

I paid $60 for Oblivion. I played it for over 250 hours. That is $.24 per hour.
I paid $60 for Fallout 3. I played it for 370 hours. That is $.16 per hour.
I have yet to feel like I have overpaid for a Bethesda game. I feel confident that Skyrim is going to be just as incredible.
I am currently trying for the Insanity achievement in Mass Effect 2. This is my 6th playthrough. I would estimate I have played it for about 210 hours. At $60 that is $.28 per hour.
I play most of the games I buy multiple times. I believe they are the best deal for the buck. Sure, I would love to pay $1 for each of these games, but I don’t mind paying the $60 because it is worth it to me. I don’t know why everyone complains so much.

People seem to be under the impression Bethesda only make content heavy RPG’s. People are wrong.

This is especially true of digital copies of games. How can something that never leaves a server cost the same as a hard copy that’s been produced, shipped and boxed? Blows my mind.

If developers actually took a bit of pride in the packaging like they did in the old days, it might be worth buying a boxed copy, but personally I think it’s much better value to get a game without having to fill my bookcase full of ugly plastic and cardboard.
Which isn’t to mention the fact that bandwidth and unlimited installs will probably run a company the same or more as a boxed copy.
… And I feel entirely the opposite about music

The Dark Lord Kotick has certainty heard of this, and is currently sending a team of assassins to Bethesda.
