SWTOR beta weekends starting worldwide in September

Thursday, 21st July 2011 21:02 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Nestled in the lovely press release regarding the Limited Edtions and pre-orders for Star Wars: The Old Republic, was news that beta test weekends will start in September. That’s good news for those of us you who have yet to be admitted into the beta club.

These “weekend play sessions” will be open to “selected players worldwide.”

“We are targeting Star Wars: The Old Republic to be one of the biggest launches of holiday 2011,” said BioWare’s Ray Muzyka. “We are taking all of the necessary steps to make sure The Old Republic has a thriving community built on a stable online foundation from day one, including limiting supply at launch to ensure that players easily transition into the servers. So whether you’re waiting to join the Empire or the Republic, pre-order now to ensure you can enter the galaxy at launch!”

Holiday 2011, huh?

Thanks, Grim.

The US holiday season starts around Thanksgiving until New Years. So somewhere in there. GAME will be sending out the final beta keys at the end of October according to their customer service team, which kind of fits in with a December release.

    So much for ‘spring’

Why would I beta test if I’m going to buy the game? I would try the beta so I could consider buying the game, not the other way around.

I doubt october as that’s when BF3 comes out. Late November is my guess. Or late september. Either way, I doubt it’ll be in the same month as BF3.

You can always cancel a preorder ^^

Why do you doubt October only because of BF3? It is looking to be a great game, don’t get me wrong, but i think BF3 and SWTOR is targeting two different groups of people, hell, the Star Wars fans alone could probably justify an October launch.

The same reason why Dead Space and Mirror Edge being released in the same month, which caused the two games to not sell that well at the start, Dead Space had a slow start but Mirrors edge never made up the sales it could have if Dead Space wasn’t released at the same time. They will want to give at least a month to to give BF3 a head start and November steps on the toes of MW3 which EA is all about. I am going with the late November prediction.

What about Skyrim? Won’t that hurt the sales too then? Or Arkham City? RockSmith? Heroes VI? Uncharted 3? Gears of War 3? All games with huge fan bases, are all these games but one destined to fail? Simply because MW3 and BF3 is getting launched?

Sorry what? Star Wars has a much bigger fan base than all those games EA doesn’t own any of those games you mentioned. They don’t want to compete with themself, that’s what killed Mirrors Edge and put it on the far back burner.

FYI all those games you listed are out long before late November so I am not sure those would be good examples.

    Uncharted 3: November 1, 2011
    Batman: October 18th
    Gears: September

SO they have nothing to do with November and the other titles are new IPs and are niche titles.

Rocksmith : October 11, 2011 I can almost guarantee this game will bomb because the music genre is dead and then they tie in complexity to it.

    Heroes: September

November has several releases, you even listed uncharted as one of them yourself. Skyrim is also coming that month. Regarding Rocksmith, how many guitar players that own a console have you spoken with? There is a huge amount of people ready to buy this game, since it is the first ever music game, as far as i am concerned. Also .

Yeah I know but they both killed each others sales the month of release. Even EA said it themself that it was a bad move. EA doesn’t care about Uncharted 3 or SKyrim, its not their game. They only care if its their own game because they don’t want to compete with themself.

And Yes I know multiple people that play the guitar, I do after all live in the Live Music Capital and none of them will be getting Rocksmith they already have their own software to do what that game does and they get paid for it.

It doesn’t matter if it is an EA game or not, of course Skyrim will have an affect on SWTOR and vice versa, it may not be huge, i don’t know, we have to wait and see.

EDIT: Disregard the deleted part, if you managed to read it before i edited it out, it’s 4 in the morning here x)

THis is all speculation. They won’t be doing an open beta. They will just be selecting a certain amount of people to play it.Thats why I believe it will be November because they don’t want to compete with Battlefield. When people say Holiday season it usually means November, history has shown that games don’t do that well that launch in December unless they are Blizzard. Even if it is late in November its gives all those games plenty of time to have a couple of weeks to sell their numbers.
