Rare boss says industry ‘on the path’ to holodeck games

Thursday, 21st July 2011 06:46 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Rare’s Scott Henson has said Kinect is one step on the path to holodeck-like gaming experiences.

“I’m not going to give you the exact date you’re going to have a holodeck in your room, but think about that for just a second,” Henson said at Develop yesterday, as reported by Eurogamer.

“Think about the movies we all grew up on and the things that inspired us in lots of different ways to create the kind of entertainment to do. We’re down that path. We’re absolutely down that path right now.”

Henson said he couldn’t date the holodeck revolution, likening it to the slow, gradual uptake of HD television – a process still ongoing many years after the technology’s launch.

“When will the holodeck happen? It’s going to be a journey. I don’t think there’s going to be a date.”

Interestingly, Henson was dismissive of new hardware, suggesting software and services will lead games into the future.

“When’s next-gen? When’s next-gen? When’s the new Xbox Live? When’s the new Xbox?” he said.

“The power of software, the power of services, and the power of platforms is that it’s always now. We continue to build on them, continue to innovate, continue to push, and we continue to build magic.”

Thanks, IndustryGamers.

Ironically you need a empty space the size of the enterprise’s holodeck to properly use kinnect :)

Yup that what i thought of future gaming a holo-deck…

@1, im pretty sure it will be allot better than that STUPID KINTEC or MOVE!! yes you need space… like a “former living room” in US is ok to run a holo-deck… or a size of 3 doors garage…

Proper holodeck games give a whole new meaning to ‘first-person shooter’, that’s for sure. :-D

Ok but how about in the mean time you could make a decent game for once? It’s been awfully long since you guys have done that.. I still have a sour taste of banjo kazooie on the 360, rare please.. Make banjo threeie and do it right. You know it is what will save your credibility.

    Let’s see.
-Responds time holodeck: instant. Kinect: 1 second (at best)
-Intelligence level holodeck: near human connections. Xbox360: cannot even similate a fly’s brain.
-Simulating realtime enviroment holodeck: intiutive and 1080 degrees view. Kinect: won’t work when you move 1 meter out of the camera’s view and max output is 720p with games (1080p = upscale)

Yeah.. Kinect is so much like holodeck >.>
