EA: App Store is in “freefall”

EA has apparently gone cold on the App Store, although it’s still finding success with DLC.

“Our current experience is that the App Store model is essentially in freefall,” EA chief creative director Richard Hilleman told MCV, as reported by CVG.

“That increasingly people in that context need to pay in-game versus out of the game.

“The good news is that our experience with DLC has been that if we do those strategies successfully, that we get payment rates that are far superior to almost everybody else in the online commerce space.”

EA had previously been extremely enthusiastic about the App Store, enjoying such success that it expanded to Android.

    Having just download Battlefield Bad Company 2 for the Xperia Play using EA’s Flexion store, I’m horrified by how bad their service is…

    No prices, file sizes, minimal information, multiple downloads, lots of click this, accept the other – its pathetic from the users’ point of view.

    EA like to ‘think’ they know what they are doing, when clearly they are not. First, they blame Steam and now the App Store. No one is safe from an out of touch company.

    Their strategy has always been to expand massively and then fire whoever they don’t need once they get in trouble for it.

    With Popcap on their hands, they don’t need an app store, but the model they’re suggesting sounds absolutely terrible. Although I’m not blind to the subtle genius of “Fucking people gently”.
