FF Versus XIII development “challenged,” yet to hit prod

A new report on Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura’s Famitsu interview suggests the game is not yet in full production. Hopes dashed.

According to Andriasang‘s translation, Nomura said the development team is experimenting with a lot of new “challenges”, so at the moment, only core members are on board. Even so, they are preparing to go into full production; it’s not at the prototype stage or anything, apparently.

The three screenshots seen by Famitsu will not be released for public viewing yet, and new screenshots of previously seen areas will be issued, showing off the new lighting effects.

Nomura’s reference to player-controlled cutscenes is still quite mysterious, but employs a new system, which the director feels has never been done before.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is currently slated for a PlayStation 3-exclusive release, with no launch window set.

    Wow really? SO then the game will come out when the new consoles will be released? Square has really lost their touch with the game industry.

    I appreciate it when game studios don’t approach a “just rush it out the door” approach, but this isn’t exactly that much better. Telling your audience that the game you’ve been teasing about for YEARS isn’t even in full production yet WILL deter sales. There’s a point where gamers just stop giving a shit anymore, and I don’t think Squeenix realizes this.

    Its not only that but videos and trailers and the company them self saying it will be out “soon”

    So all those videos were just fleshed out prototype and a really flashy CG trailer? Good for you Square you really lost the mark this gen with consoles your internal studios somehow fail but your 2nd party studios are doing better than you. Explain this logic to me.

    I imagine you can chalk this up to dodgy translation.

    As for the interactive cutscenes, I suspect you can already see some examples of this in the most recent trailer. There’s several scenes where the player is still in control whilst dynamic events, which would usually be confined to a cinematic in a Final Fantasy, play out around them; the easiest analogue is probably Uncharted‘s interactive set pieces.

    It’s a good thing “Square Enix” now has two very different meanings (as an immense publishing monolith and a JRPG dev studio), because I don’t think their original iteration is cutting it any more.

    I mean, even if you still like their games, this is a terrible studio. They’re just flopping about aimlessly for years at a time now.

    “FF’s the biggest franchise ever. Let’s make two of these!”
    “No worries. Off you go.”

    “Balls. That didn’t do as well as we thought. Where’s the other one?”
    “It’s… the same. But darker.”
    “Yeah. You might want to rethink that.”
    “Rethink?”
    “Yep. Like, make another game.”
    “But. We’ve been working on it for five years.”
    “See this? It’s my red button. Nice, isn’t it?”

    I was 15 when they announced XIII, VXIII and Type-0. I’m now 20. If this doesn’t end up canned within the next year or so, I’d be amazingly surprised.

    It’s not going to be canned. Too much money spent on the pre-production. No matter how game is bad it’s going to come out like Final Fantasy XIII

    They already spent 10-of the millions on the cut scenes alone. It’s coming out for 100% the question is “when”

    Chairman: “Right so, we have three games in this big thing we’re making, XIII, Versus XIII and Agito XIII. Briefing please.”
    XIII Director: “Linear, like the Westerners like it, no towns, slightly iffy story that ends up being over-complicated. Oh, and we’ll shock people with a 360 announcement that will bomb in local markets.”
    Agito XIII Director: “Interesting summons, classic mechanics of towns, beat the boss terrorising the town, move on, over-arching plot. It’ll be at the very least solid.”
    Nomura: “Zippers, lots and lots of zippers.”
    Chairman: “What?”
    Nomura: “Sorry, darker, more cinematic, people will really want it…zippers.”

    2011:

    Chairman: “Ok, so XIII did Ok, not so much critically, but it was…reasonable. We’ve changed Agito to Type-0 and people are still interested. What’s next?”
    XIII-2 Director: “We’re advancing XIII’s plot, but making it more expansive, adding towns, but keeping the battle system except with tameable monsters. People are skeptical but it’ll turn out alright.”
    Chairman: “Good, good. Now, where’s Versus?”
    Nomura: “We’re working on it…sort of…kind of…sorry, what were we talking about? I was adding more zippers to Noctis’ pants…ooh, I can add one to his jacket right here…”

    you got it all wrong though.It’s more like the chairman halted the project to have it’s staff members working on XIII,everyone knew that.the same happens with it and XIII-2 now.
    How Versus team can enter full production when they’re dragging them to another project to “help” all the time?
