Gears of War 3 to go on sale uncut in Germany

The BPJM has confirmed it’s to let Gears of War 3 release in Germany without any content cut from the game. The first two games were not available to buy in the country, with PEGI versions banned from going on sale. The BPJM, who had banned Gears 1 and 2 from Germany, said it had no “relevance for a ban” with 3. Germany’s seen as very strict on violent games, so this is a big win.

More over at Eurogamer. Game’s out in September for Xbox 360.

So…. it’s less violent? Or they softened their rules? I’d be interested to know why 3 is okay but the first two weren’t.

The previous games weren’t banned. MS just decided not to publish them in Germany because of the risk that they could get banned, as far as I know. So it’s probably just MS who decided to give it a try.

I always thought that MS didn´t want to create a cutted version extra for the german market.

basically, they’re “indexed”, which means not exactly the same as banned, but comes quite close. It means you can’t display it in store shelves, you can’t advertise it in any way and the press can’t cover it.

Most publishers opt not to publish it here when it stands to reason that the game will be indexed (which it only can be after it is published, not before). This leads to next to all major retailers not stocking up on it.

You can get those games legally with many small stores, though, because they just improt them from neighbouring countries (austria’s a favorite). And there’s always

The peculiar thing is that and how they decide on a case by case basis. Stuff like Dead Space 2 can come out over here no problem (they just took out friendly fire – lol), while games like MadWorld get banned and confiscated. There are only few real bans to be fair and most games come out over here just fine – i remember GTA IV having no cuts at all (?), while the dismemberments and torture scenes have been cut from Black Ops for example.

Thing is, it seems to be very much to be open to interpretation, which game is deemed “dangerous” and “damaging” and which not, which leads to very uneven results.

i´m german and i played both gears of course. just like nr. 4 said: austria or uk are the best options. very easy. there is a problem sometimes with uk versions though: DLC wont work sometimes. if i recall that correct i couldn´t get the map packs form the german xbl marketplace for world at war. same with black ops…probably because of the swastikas (w@w) in some of the maps. that stuff is really annoying. so it´s good if the game will be on regular sales to avoid something like that. i´m not that interested in gears 3 though yet. really enjoyed the first 2 but wasn´t blown away. not on my top franchise list. i just don´t like this overbrutality chainsaw stuff in some of epic´s games. don´t know, just not my style. i crave a good 3rd person shooter though. uncharted also didn´t hook me that much as well. vanquish didn´t work for me either..i even prefered lost planet (FIRST ONE) over these games. seriously. loved it so much even with it´s flaws. i want something like that again – just better – too bad capcom ruined it completely with LP2…that said: so many other awesome games this fall. gears 3 probably a rental…
