Arkham City’s Robin gets new concept art, explained
Warner’s released another piece of art for Robin in Batman: Arkahm City, with developer Rocksteady promising that its version was going to “move away” from the Boy Wonder concept.

“We wanted to create a Robin that players would identify as a contemporary character and move away from the traditional “Boy Wonder” image that most people know,” said senior concept artist, Kan Mutfic, on the Rocksteady forums.
“Our vision of Robin is the one of a troubled young individual that is calm and introverted at times but very dangerous and aggressive if provoked. The shaved head is inspired by cage fighters, because we thought that Robin might be doing that in his spare time to keep him on his toes.
“Still, we kept all the classic trademarks of Robin’s appearance, such as the red and yellow colors of his outfit, the cape and the mask.”
You can read the full post here, and the full concept art below.
Batman: Akrham City launches on October 18 in the US and October 21 in the UK. Get a 12 minute gameplay video here.

Don’t complain. At least he doesn’t look like fucking Sam Worthington anymore.

Actually really quite liking this, I didn’t quite get where the ‘boy wonder’ image would fit into Rocksteady’s vision anyhow – a darker and grittier Gotham with a spandex wearing little runty kid? No thanks.
This version looks like he could at least take care of himself, I just hope they don’t go too far with the teen angst and make him too ‘emo’.

Personally I like the sound and look of this newer Robin. Glad to see he’s finally not some little kid or camp young man in garish tones. I just hope his voice fits.

@ 5,
Yeah, I think being too “emo” would ruin it. I do like the idea of him just being a little more of a street-wise, tough character. Maybe not as refined as Batman when kicking ass, just a bit more rough around the edges.

That *is* Robin, they’ve just taken Tim Drake’s current attitude and kept a variant of his original costume.
It’s a shame this was probably put into the game before the recent Robin revamp in the comics, I’d have loved to see a ‘rough & tough’ version of Robin’s current modern costume, rather than his older traditional one.
Still, at least they didn’t go for Damien Wayne’s version of the Robin suit!

i have no complain for leaving boy wonder image. but it just doesnt feel robin in my eye IMO.
- shaved hair make him look like ordinary dudebro. it also make him less “kid hero”
- bulky body body. sure it fit witk AC atmosphere, but it bit strange for robin.
overall dissapoint for me IMO, robin should be more light hearted and idelistic in term of design

The cape looks dumb, Batman’s cap has purpose (flying, hiding etc), Robins looks like a torn hoody.

Huh, what happened to that ‘shaved head’ Robin from a week ago or so?

@12 If ye read the article, he still has a shaved head, they’re just showing him with the cape and a hood and they’re showing the tones and colours they’re using for him.

Wow, they somehow made Robin badass. Never thought I’d see this day. Even the improved and darker comic versions in recent years didn’t look this awesome.

@11 the cape didn’t have a purpose in the cartoons either, robin relied on his parkour, acrobatics and his grappling gun. the cape was probably only there so he’d fit in with the rest of the batman family

Wow nice one! I could get used to a Robin like that instead of this annoying whining brat. Is he still a “pre-order bonus only”?

Right because we all know that fighting in organised fights with rules keeps you battle hardened for ruthless criminals….. *rolls eyes* only a concept that will sound good to someone who doesn’t take martial arts seriously.

@17 I don’t get your point, it would keep him in shape and able to kick ass which is what matters. Besides, they only mention “cage fighters”, they don’t refer to “organised” fights with “rules”.

Look at it from this point. Batman has a multi billion dollar training program with state of the art simulations as well as real time tutoring his pupils to fight against hardened criminals(as well as himself). Unless its a under ground circuit ran by the villians robin is trained to put all of them to shame. as well as batman doesn’t condone any of the robins participating in underground events. It defeats the purpose of being a superhero stopping unorthodoxed events. We’re not talking about real underground cage fights were talking about caged fights in gotham. The concept of a cage fighter in our world is childs play in gotham.
Also, 90% of cage fights legal and illegal still have rules because you can’t have a dead body in your ring.

@ 19,
“We’re not talking about real underground cage fights were talking about caged fights in gotham. The concept of a cage fighter in our world is childs play in gotham.”
Isn’t that one reason why he would do it? I mean, without going deep into what Batman has and hasn’t got and what does and doesn’t happen in Gotham, I can’t see why fighting other fighters would be a bad thing or a waste of time?
Batman is one of the best hand to hand combatants in the DC universe but he wasn’t born with that gift, he learnt it, I doubt he would stop Robin from wanting to learn from real fighters.

@20 Again would be pointless seeing how Robin has a network of super heros to go through outside of batman including bobcat. Who is hands down better than the bats in terms of hand to hand combat. Going into a cage fight is just pointless for the “boy wonder” when he has a plethora of mentors who literally shit on the above average man.
And, the frowning from bats would be if it were a underground fight which they’ve found themselves amoungst several times. Also, the kind of behavior their having tim drake show is something that Damien Wayne and Jason Todd would do. It isn’t like red robin to do that.

Robin was never cool, and he certainly never fitted with later more grown-up takes on the Batman universe. There have been so many attempts over the years to try and make Robin interesting, but he’s always been crap.
So, Bruce Wayne adopted the guise of a bat to strike fear into the hearts of Gotham’s criminal underworld. What the fuck does adopting the guise of a robin get you? Striking a festive spirit in the Christmassy underworld?

It really seems that Rocksteady are intent on just chucking everything into this game and hoping that enough fan service will see them through. Don’t they understand that it is BATMAN that is the main point of interest here? One good story about the Dark Knight is all any bat-fan really needs. The rest of it is just fluff.
