Minecraft passes 10 million users

Friday, 1st July 2011 20:56 GMT By Andrew Groen

Everybody in the gaming industry knows Minecraft is popular, but until now we didn’t really know exactly how popular it really is.

The designer of Minecraft, Markus Persson, tweeted earlier today that Minecraft had officially passed that most ridiculous of user counts, ten million.

It was just a quick, off-hand comment rather than a full press release, so we don’t have any details on how dedicated those players are.

Are those active users? Or is that the total number of accounts that have been set up? Persson did not clarify.

Look at the text under the video, it’s a counter. It indicates that they just reached 10 millions registered users, with 2.6M that bought the game itself :)

Are you serious, Andrew? Real-time stats for the registered users and sales figures have been publicly available for two years. Ten million registered users on is about the 100th milestone that Notch has mentioned somewhere.

BTW, you don’t even have to register to play the free Creative version, but doing so allows you to save your game. So I would think that the number of people that have at least tried the game is way more than that 10 million.
