Quick Quotes: John Carmack on violent games being cathartic
“I really think, if anything, there is more evidence to show that the violent games reduce aggression and violence. There have actually been some studies about that, that it’s cathartic. If you go to QuakeCon and you walk by and you see the people there [and compare that to] a random cross section of a college campus, you’re probably going to find a more peaceful crowd of people at the gaming convention. I think it’s at worst neutral and potentially positive.” – id’s John Carmack to IndustryGamers.

Quick Quotes: Kinect can potentially revolutionize player-character interaction
“[Something] we struggled with in the games industry for a long time is building an emotional connection between the person playing and the characters inside the games. With Kinect, [you are] able to talk to characters inside the games, and experience not just voice recognition but them being able to understand the tone of your voice and how you’re saying things, and being able to see your body and incorporating that into relationships. I think with the launch game Kinectimals you’re starting to see a type of human-to-digital character relationship that can be built using Kinect. I think Kinect technology allows us to build stories and storytelling in a way that is more user-driven, that hasn’t been done before.” – Kinect creative director Kudo Tsunoda to Edge (via CVG).

Vindictus Europe teaser site opens, video released
Nexon has launched a teaser website and trailer for its free-to-play MMO Vindictus Europe. Set for release in the fall, it looks a bit gritty and gothy compared to a lot of games in the same genre on the market. Not that it’s a bad thing, we are intrigued after watching, to be honest. The MMO is a “physics-based game with high-speed combat, that uses a “modified Source Engine to enable interaction with the environment. Players will apparently be able to “throw and shatter objects, hurl debris, bind enemies with chains, and pierce defenses with spears.” That came from the mouths of GameFront, which seems to know quite a bit about the game. We’ll blame them if we start spending too much time in it at launch.
