Blizzard talks Titan, says it’s hard to not “build on what other games do”

World of Warcraft lead systems designer Greg Street has discussed the development process behind Project Titan with Eurogamer, and has said that it’s a bit hard to create a game which doesn’t borrow from another one on the market.

“The other day a designer was apologising, saying, ‘Are you going to be mad if we steal that idea?’,” Street told Eurogamer. “Game designers steal ideas all the time.

“We build on what other games do. It’s hard to look at many features in WoW and say, ‘Blizzard were so brilliant for coming up with that in a vacuum.’

“We’re building on what great game designers have done since they started making games.”

For the moment, there’s not much known about Project Titan at the moment, but if the rumored release date of 2013 is accurate, it’s likely we’ll hear something about it come, at the very least, BlizzConn 2012.

All the ‘innovations’ in WoW I can think of have been developed by players as add-ons that eventually get copied partially or wholesale into future versions of their game.

If Blizzard wasn’t ok with the fact that other developers “borrow” from them it would be totally hypocritical.

#5 Why not december this year!?Noting big coming out at that time,and I could swear that I have read somewhere that they said if Q3 beta testing goes well they will release it this year.

Diablo 3 for the summer release for 2012 sounds right.

No info ever mentioned Diabo 3 for Winter 2011 the closest Blizz release will be Starcraft: Heart of the Swarm and that will be coming out before Diablo 3.

Its supposed to start the 3rd quarter and then with Blizzard their betas are usually 3-6 months. SO keep dreaming.

So zone-phasing is not at all innovative (I’ve not seen any game with it), and isn’t it just good that Blizzard implements the addons into the game so that we don’t have to bother with updating/running in to annoying bugs all the time?

Anyways, any game-designer knows that “stealing ideas” is totally acceptable, rather anyone doing anything creative normally (not always, but mostly) base their stuff on something else. Or they at least try to make it look like something else, ’cause come on…let’s face it.
There’s few of you who wouldn’t go crying and bitching if a company release a game that was completely new at every point.
People don’t like what they don’t understand, and people understand what they’ve allready learned :O

That doesn’t go for everyone though…but that’s the majority of the market.
