#94 Don’t apologise on my behalf darling. I don’t know you, and you certainly don’t fucking know me. I wouldn’t want to keep the company of such a whining, self loathing apologist such as yourself anyway.
If you are too stupid to see that the UK has sunk into the mire due mainly to our adoption of the ‘culture’ of that cesspool across the pond, then I really feel for you.

You keep saying “us” and “we” like you had anything to do with it. Or that you could even begin to sum up an entire country based on a single stereotype – theirs or ours. Furthermore, you’re being incredibly selective and very jongoistic and embarrassing the rest of us on the world stage.
So please, shut up, wise up, and in the meantime keep your opinions to yourself – because that’s all they are. What you’re saying isn’t history, it’s a press release for the blinkered past.

Ooh, getting a bit touchy are we? Suddenly you don’t sound so much like a failed whiny history undergraduate, and more like a 14 year old riding on the coat tails of our country’s mixed successes.
The “UK’s in a mire mainly because of American culture”?! Well at least you’re not blaming the darkies.

#102 That’s the problem with the UK, the general populace has had their national identity ground out of it by successive governments, so we end up with apologetic sheep being harvested for taxes, whilst the media rot the brains of the masses with reality TV and soap operas. I think it’s you who needs to wise up chap.
As for my opinion? As Voltaire said; “I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write”.

This has drifted somewhat off topic, following a bit of friendly banter between our cousins across the pond that got a little out of hand. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and good or bad, right or wrong, they’re still entitled to it. Not wishing to engender any further ill feeling, I think we should call it a day and get back to the topic in hand…
E3 was bloody awful this year…;)

I’m actually Irish American so not only have the Brits fucked my ancestors or descendants multiple times, I have no “descendants” from you assholes that colonized the Americas and killed off the Native Americans with small pox blankets nor am I in any way related to anyone involved in the American slave trade since my grandparents didn’t come over from their farms in Ruscommon, Ireland until the 1940s…
But as far as nuking Japan goes, the US did what it had to, and proved pretty effective since no one touched American soil again until 2001 until those towel heads attacked my home state of New York…so while many innocents died I guess they learned their lesson from screwing with us and made them regret launching the attack on Pearl Harbor…and I’m pretty sure it led to no more nukes being used in warfare since we saw the absolute devastation they cause and no more world wars occuring thereafter…so you’re welcome

If there’s a singular problem with the UK, it isn’t having their national identity ground out of them and if that had happened it wouldn’t have been by the government (who only wish they had so much power).
My guess is that you’ve studied or, more likely given how much you like to generalise and reduce arguments, are studying politics hence your attempt to word-perfect quote from Voltaire. It’s not even proven that the quote was first his. But I can tell you as a politics graduate myself that that doesn’t impress anyone – those who haven’t studied it don’t care, and those who have already know it.
Wake up – governments don’t force reality TV on people, people choose it. Just because you’ve had a better education than many doesn’t mean sh*t until you’ve lived out in the real world. You can blame the Americans, UK governments etc etc etc. all you want but until you’ve achieved one single thing that comes close to all the achievements of the UK past that you like to boast about, you don’t have a single right to think of yourself as being any bit better than all the other people you criticise.

@85:
It’s not quite as simple as that. The fact is, the clubs are rich because they win things. There are countless teams who used to be at the top, but are now in the lower leagues because they didn’t get the income from all the different places (prize money/sponsorship/gate reciepts/etc) that winning trophies draws them from.
Former European Cup winners like Nottingham Forest, the likes of Champions League semi-finalists Leeds Utd, etc, etc.
There are also teams like Wimbledon who went from the bottom of the league to being in the top flight, without the need for millions in cash.
So just like a guy who gets 7 kills in a row will argue that he deserves a harrier, clubs who win trophies will argue that they deserve their money.
The only exception are the handful of clubs who are taken over by billionaires and buy their way to the top. But once the guy dies/loses his money/loses interest, they’re going to be in trouble.
And it’s not only the big clubs who win the trophies, either. If that were the case, you wouldn’t get the likes of Porto winning the UCL.
On top of that, like it or not, having rich teams with the best players builds excellence. You’ve got clubs like Barcelona (owned by their fans) who people are calling the best team ever, because they can afford to bring in the best players.
In a competition where this kind of acquired excellence is intentionally stamped out, are the fans really getting value for money?
If they have to watch makeshift teams every year, where’s the real quality coming from?
The system isn’t perfect, but football, as with every sport, inn’t purely about winning. If that were the case, you wouldn’t get 40,000 sell out crowds in the lower leagues like you do at clubs like Leeds Utd. If everyone threw the towel in because they thought that it was a closed system where only a handful of teams ever win, then I might agree with you, but the reality isn’t like that.
Face it, football is the most popular sport in the world. The NFL is the most popular sport in one country.
That’s because people recognise that it’s fun to both watch and play.
As for things like diving, lack of competition at the top, etc, well, they’re not problems that are big enough to stop football from being the most popular sport on the planet.
___
Also, whether Americans are harder on cheats or not is beside the point. The point is that cheating (simulation) happens in the NFL as well, so acting like every NFL player is some sort of lion fighting gladiator is a bit silly.

As you stated, and I concurred afterwards, there is nothing else to be said…
But I guess I will attempt to get the last word in anyway since I earned the right to call them that since they attacked my country and my family members had to watch people jumping out of buildings on fire, and run miles on foot to escape the city or hop a ferry to a different state to get to safety and I had to sit as a sophomore in high school and watch my city brought to its knees as the smoke bellowed from the towers and they eventually collapsed, not to mention they do wear some form of towels on their heads so it is not an inaccurate description…

I was massively disappointed in the continual focus on Kinect from MS this year. I know it’s sold 10 million units, and it’s a new way to play etc, but without the killer app, it’s just not going to appeal to the core gamer that is their main target audience.
In fact I’m getting the hump in general with all this ‘broadening of the audience’ bullshit. I blame Nintendo for showing the games industry that grannies can play games too! Bioware are dumbing down all their product to attract a wider demographic at the expense of their titles, and it gets on my wick. We don’t want to be spoon fed, we want to be challenged, delighted and surprised. I thought we were past treating gamers like kids?

But yeah MS’ focus on Kinect was not very exciting although I guess the features in ME3 and GRFS are somewhat interesting it did not blow me away…I liked the mw3 demo starting off the show and tomb raider demo wasn’t bad…halo 4 and halo anniversary were cool as well, and Ryse looks like it could be decent…I was disappointed with Nintendo (even though I wouldn’t buy a Nintendo console anyway) and Sony, I was just underwhelmed by all their Move support (supposedly sold over 8 million units yet still hasn’t reached the 10 mil milestone that Kinect reach 3 months prior to e3) and the Vita wasn’t all that impressive or surprising…although the Dust 514 and Bioshock Infinite segments were interesting…Ubi and EA weren’t half bad either, even though I only paid attention to Ubi for GRFS, FarCry 3 and ACR…

@128 you are a bit late on the political discussion and conspiracy theories..and I’m not here to discuss that, as of now it was Islamic terrorists and until there is solid proof of otherwise I don’t need to entertain these ideas although I have had my suspicions in the past…and yeah maybe China would screw us with their never ending waves of 7 billion people and maybe Russia, I don’t doubt their military power but it would never happen, I’m pretty sure if it would have the Cold War would have become a real war and not just an arms race…but Pakistan, it doesn’t matter no beef with them although Seal Team Six just infiltrated their country without their knowledge and shot the head figure of the 9/11 attacks through the eye, so I’m not worried about that…war has changed anyway (contrary to what Ron Perlman says at the beginning of Fallout games) and it is no longer country versus country it is just urban warfare, and armies fighting bands of guerilla terrorists throughout several different countries and I don’t think it will ever go back to some big world war country vs country conflict unless something like Homefront happens or China decides to start a war…

Wow glad I missed this mess.
Some real winners in this thread.
Long story short Football(NA – and I say NA, because Canada has their own league too – its not just NFL, but its CFL, and Areana leagues. Its Pro-am teams, Collage teams, and High School teams) is an institution in NA. It doesn’t have to be better. Doesn’t have to watched by more numbers then other sports. It doesn’t have to prove anything at all.
Let me correct some stupid statements.
Every major profesional sport that I know of in the world has its share of rule benders. Some athletes take human performance druges. Some eat special diets. Some take Vitamins or herbs. Some take chemicals. Some take herbs that mimc know outlawed drugs, but as of yet those herbs haven’t been outlawed in said sport. Every sport. Don’t fool yourself.
Athletes in the UK are no different then ones in the US or the ones in France or Aussie or anywhere in between. They are competing for fame, fortune and glory. When those things are on the line, its only cheating if you get caught, or so many think.
Before the US got into WW2 England was being bombed daily. That Mr. Heavenly Gamer is indeed a fact. London was under blackouts at night. The US did offer help and assistance to the UK. W/O the US help you may well be speaking German right now or Russian. The US helped, ALOT. And with US help, and the blood of US soldiers, TOGETHER we pushed the Nazis back.
WE, the allied forces liberated France, pushed Hitler out of N. Africa, toppled Italy and drove into Berlin. Those are FACTS.
I know a lot of details are left out, I ain’t writting a book here.
But credit where it is due. The United States was a huge part of the reason Hitler was defeated. I have family that fought in that damn war. America lost a lot of good men helping you. Standing next to you against evil. Don’t forget that.
Yes we dropped the Atomic Bomb. And right or wrong it worked. The goal was to defeat the Japanesse. And quickly. Island hoping would have dragged the war out for years and years. And it was not as if JP was going to just surrender. They would have fought to the death.
The devistation the bombs caused was catostrophic. Its beyond words. And it was done in a day and age whne there wasn’t instant media, most Americans had no idea how bad it was till years later. If the US/Allied command had known then what we all know know, things may have preceded differently. But they didn’t.
Here is the kicker. I didn’t drop the bombs. No one in the current US had anything to do with that decision. It would be like blaming modern day Germany or the people that live there for Adolf Hitler. DSB is right, a couple of you folks have some very … unique views of history.
There is alot of crap my nation does that I am not proud of. The same could prolly be said of most nations. I don’t run my nation, I just live in it. How about you?
Ok other things. NA Football has a history of players getting killed and paralyized. Thus the pads and helmets. And there is a very large amount of kids playing that range from 5yr old to collage level, player safty is a top concern.
And do we really want to be the one nation that has the most dangerious sport in the world? Thats dumb. Any nation that cares about it athletes wants to see them safe. Again the equipment.
And I am sorry but no Soccer is not the same kind of sport as Football. Rugby, yes. Aussie Rules Football(hell Aussie rules almost anything – them fellas are damn tough) yes. But Soccer? No.
Soccer is the worlds number one sport because all it takes is a ball. Anyone can play anywhere = brilliant. You can play that game with a mob of kids in an empty field or steet so long as you have one ball. Its basic rules are easy to understand, and pretty much anyone can pick up playing right away. Those are not put downs, btw. Just simple facts. Try playing a game of Hockey in the back streets of anywhere, not gonna happen.
It is what it is.
Some of you are so radib fans that you actualy think it matters how many people play or watch a sport. Who cares? I am American, I hate Soccer. Period. I don’t care what league or team you follow. All I see is a bunch of skinny scrawnie players kicking a ball around, just waiting for a chance to rip their shirts off while runing around the field after a goal. Its boring as hell. Its right up there with Curling. I would rather watch Baseball, and thats boring too. And don’t give me NA attention spans either Canada does curling, and the US came up with Baseball. Both boring. IMO. And btw, that was not a put down either, just my personal preference as a sports fan.
A couple of you guys are treading into stupid. I am really getting tired of some of you putting down the Americans here. And btw DSB is not American, and he said so. You sit there and display the very same traits you assume and acusse all Americans of having. Arogance and ignorance mostly. You can call us anything you want. But there is a little bit of almost every nation in the world mixed into this metling pot of a land. “Give me your tired, poor, huddled masses….” and all of that. Most of the people that came here did so seaking a better life.
No nation is perfect and most of a nations faults are not that of their peoples, but those of their leaders. Keep that in mind when your playing the blame game. And what sport you watch/play isn’t all that big of a deal so long as you enjoy it.
I took the time to point out the origins of the word Soccer because so many EUs assume that Americans made the word, and then they toss insults around like anyone would care about where the word comes from in the first place. I think it was a cool read.
Besides, whats in a name?
And isn’t this a video games website anyways?
