Quick quotes: Street Fighter x Tekken visuals for PS3, Vita “pretty much identical”

“Right now, because we haven’t finished tuning and optimising everything, the frame rate occasionally will stutter. We’re looking to fix that. But the actual visuals themselves, the actual textures and everything, look pretty much identical. It’s virtually a one-to-one match at this point.” – SFxT boss Yoshinori Ono, speaking to Eurogamer about the graphics for the fighter on PS3 and PS Vita, the latter being announced at E3 last week.

I wonder if Sony are making a problem for themselves here.

If they’re practically identical, isn’t one version going to cannibalise sales from the other? Nobody’s going to buy the same game twice, so one of these versions will die or they’ll both underperform.

If you can hook Vita upto a Big Screen HDTV and sill get the same graphics, Sony could hit a snag. If you can use Vita for a seemless and smoother Online experience, Sony could hit a snag. I am just not sure how well Vita will do those things or even how well it will sell outside of JP/Asia. Cause I doubt too many people will be looking to replace their PS3s or the console experience by buying a Vita.

#4 – Which is probably why Sony is saying no to Video-Out on the Vita.

A shame as I just don’t want a PS3 (since I have an XB) but love my PSP and wouldn’t mind a Vita so I could play Sony games on the big screen…

Is it a different market though, Erth? Because they seem to have practically identical games. Are there really “traditional” gamers who don’t do under-the-telly consoles?

It won’t video out to TVs? Hell that is is how I played Phantasy Star Portable one and two was on a video out to a smaller HDTV. Too big of a TV screen and the pic would be crap, but it was better then playing on the small PSP screen.

No video out is a really bad idea, imo.

Well If I liked a game enough, I would get it on both vita and ps3. Especially if I could share the same save between the two.

I think the pricing is what will matter in the end for getting both versions. While it could be a misprice currently both Vita and PS3 versions of Dragon’s Crown are up for $29.99 on Amazon.com. So basically for the retail price (minus 1 cent) of a console title you get two copies of the game one for the PS3 and one for the Vita – if you so choose and thus it’ll be quite an interesting experience sort of like steamworks for Mac and PCs.

Now I’m sure all companies especially Capcom titles won’t follow this model but you can bet that software is where they’ll make their money back and honestly I don’t think it’ll be a major issue. If porting a title to the Vita is cheap it’s not a huge budget increment (especially after it’s been done for the first few games). All you’d do is open up the market a bit. There’s fees associated with doing HD rereleases (PSP remasters) mostly since it’s outsourced. With this model they pretty much don’t have to think about that. It’s been said Vita budgets match current PSP budgets (which are presumably lower than console budgets) and can only get lower over time. Not to mention we’re likely to see Digital Sales pick up because people want that. (People have been buying even Infamous 2 off of PSN lately despite it being £49.99 and this too after the hack and everything.)

Not to mention I do believe that Digital Sales on the PSN are actually good when the price is right. Case in point. God of War: Ghost of Sparta really didn’t do great at retail but they’ve sold it for cheaper (by 1 quid or so) with extras on the PSN. It was a Platinum title around March-April which means it’s sold 500k (platinum target) in Palzone on a handheld that doesn’t sell well in western territories.

It’s easy to write things off when we’re just sitting here and speculating rubbish to be honest. I think they’ve got an interesting strategy here. While I don’t think the device will sell ridiculously I do feel that the price and software on it (plus easy to code factor) will definitely eat into the 3DS sales. The net dedicated handheld market will decrease possibly from 70M+150M to about 200M in total but we might see the 3DS and PSV neck in neck at around 90-100M each by the end of this cycle since price for the two devices are comparable this time around.

I’ll prefer vita version over ps3 version of every multiplatform game i want. Portability(aka playing on the bed) is a too huge selling point for me.
