Monday, 13th June 2011 14:38 GMT By Johnny Cullen

UK games retail went into a YoY decrease tailspin for the month of May despite the launch of Rockstar’s LA Noire, a report from MCV is claiming.

£73.2 million was made at retail last month, down 5.4 percent from the £77.4 million made for the same period in 2010.

For unit sales, it was at 2.92 million units, down ten percent from the 3.3 million units for May last year.

The Team Bondi investigator thriller was the biggest selling game in the UK last month, having launch midway through May.

L.A. Noire is no Red Dead.

And it shouldn’t be its too cerebral for that demographic.

They don’t call it the summer hole because people are buying so much it implodes.

Red Dead had a slow pick up and it had a steady flow over the year. THe same could be with LA Noire.

Hardly surprising given last year’s May releases, which included such games as Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Split/Second, Blur, Alan Wake, etc.

2010 simply had more volume; relatively little came out this May.

I hope this wasn’t because I didn’t buy anything in May due to being skint.

@2 Red Dead was not a slow pick up. It was a slow first week, followed by it selling out entirely in the three weeks that followed. There was about a week and a half where you couldn’t get the game for love nor money. I wouldn’t call a game that needs a full re-print of it’s 5 million initial run a steady flow. RDR just sold more and more through May, to the detriment of every other game released in may.

2K even lamented it by saying it took the air out of the room and that their other products suffered as a result.

@5 what other products did 2k(or more appropriately TakeTwo) even release last May besides Red Dead?

But yeah not much released this May…Duke got pushed back, F3AR got pushed back, Deus Ex got pushed back, Dungeon Siege III got pushed back…so yeah I guess the delays just caught up with the releases…May consisted of LA Noire, Brink, The Witcher 2 and Dirt 3…and that’s about it…
