Gibeau: “We’ve already uncovered new ways of playing Battlefield,” with Wii U

Thursday, 9th June 2011 17:31 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

EA games label president Frank Gibeau has said the controller for Wii U controller provided the firm with “new plays to play Battlefield,” as an example.

Speaking in a small video over on Nintendo’s site, Gibeau said the new controller is going to revolutionize “what’s happening in consoles,” and that it is a “phenomenal piece of technology.”

“What’s really going to make it stand out for core gamers is the new controller,” he said. “It’s touchscreen, it’s elegant and it works seamlessly with the experience. And we’ve just had a little bit of time with it now and we’ve already uncovered new ways of playing Battlefield, for example, that we’re really excited about.

“You can imagine that there are new ways of playing the game from a commander mode or for being able to drive from a different position inside of a vehicle. What I really liked about it was how good it felt in your hands. In addition to that it’s super powerful. It allows you to do a lot of different things no other controller can do.

“We couldn’t be happier than to be partners with Ninteno on this new platform.”

I can not wait to get my hands on it. Even if it just to have a screen for maps, inventory, and such.

I’m perfectly happy with the way I control BF thanks very much, have people been asking for new ways? I expect people using these controls online will become known as ‘fodder’, to be competative taking your eyes of the screen for any reason is IMO a bad idea.

Might be interesting if you could use it to aim with, like in the E3 demo.

Can’t see it being much of an improvement other than that.

Seems like when running around you could use it to mark enemies on a map or even just in game if you can have both screens running the same image. He’s right there’s loads of scope for the controller in most shooters.

Just off the top of my head…you could use it aboard a vehicle as “window” to aim through: say you’re the gunner on a chopper – you remain stationary – and hence you could move the controller around to imitate aiming the gun.

What’s more exciting is if, during an online match, you could view the map real-time and with a few touches and swipes, direct your squad members to change position or watch out for an incoming tank etc.

Changing load-outs and customizations would be a hell of a lot faster using the touch-screen too.
