Report – Wii U powered by Unreal Tech

Epic Games has hinted, but not confirmed, that Wii U uses Unreal Tech, if a report on Develop is any indication.

Speaking with the site at E3, Epic VP Mark Rein told Develop its theory on Wii U running the tech “isn’t an illogical conclusion to make”, but would not comment further on the matter.

Last month Rein told the site “the second Nintendo releases a piece of hardware that can run our engine well, we’ll be on it like water on fish,” and yesterday he commented: “Water, meet fish!”

Yesterday, upon the announcement of Wii U, Batman: Arkham City and Aliens Colonial Marines were confirmed as being in development for the new console. and both games make use of Unreal Engine 3.

So that means that other engines won’t do so well on it?

Is this a surprise or what?

Wii U is powered by AMD and Unreal engine is nothing special these days (if it’s not a mobile market)

i’m more interested in VITA’s Unreal Engine 3.5.

I’d have thought this was a given, considering the games that were announced yesterday.

@3

Thats true. I wish people would start using other engines like Crytek or even ID’s Tech 5. Unreal is great in its use and usability but there are better engines to use and offer a lot more. ID Tech 5 is not out yet but I really can’t wait to try that engine out and see what damage I can do with it.

I imagine most people use U3 because it’s the most proven, the easiest to get staff for and (probably) the cheapest.

@5 that is True. Carmack and ID were saying the ID Tech 5 is very user friendly so thats why I am most interested.

ID tech 5 is not going to be for licensed :(
Sniper ghost Warrior 2 will use Cryengine 3.

@7

I know its not they will keep in house until they move on and then they will make it open source. But if you get Rage you get the level editor, that’s what I am most excited about.

I am pretty sure this garden demo with the bird they showed during the Nintendo conference was running on the Unreal Engine 3. It was just an intuition, but everything screamed for it.

The picture in this article is from that brandnew tech demo from that Unreal engine, so this is the brandnew engine on Wii U then?

@1 no
@16 the mobile UDK engine is not the same as the original UDK. no mobile devices could run the current UDK (non-mobile) version
@14 unlikely

Misleading headline FTL… A console is not “powered” by a game engine. Game engines are used to make games, and any console with enough horsepower to run them can do so. If you meant to say that the Wii U is capable of running Unreal Engine games, fine, but say that.
