Kotick throws water on BF3′s chances against MW3

Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:39 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has made public doubts over Battlefield 3′s chances against Modern Warfare 3 this year.

“So far, I’ve only seen Battlefield 3 on a PC. I haven’t seen it on a console where the bulk of our business is,” Kotick told CNBC at Nintendo’s E3 press conference in a video interview, referring to most of the footage of the DICE shooter being released on PC.

Brief glimpses of the PS3 version were shown during the multiplayer trailer of BF3 during Monday’s EA press conference, though.

“If it’s just a PC title, as it looks like today, that’s just a small audience to participate,” he added.

Battlefield 3 launches on October 25 in the US and October 28 in the UK for PS3, 360 and PC. Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 8 for the same platforms worldwide.

In the same interview, he talked about WiiU, Nintendo’s next-gen successor.

I have no doubt in the long run BF3 is gonna outsell MW3. It may not be this year but I suspect sales will hold up for some time as many will buy MW3 but later will either switch to BF3 or will want both. BF 3 definitely has the PC market dominated and Kotick is underestimating the size of the PC community.

I guess if you like more of the same you will LOVE MW3, but if you are looking for something more, you’ll wanna play BF3.

Ultimately I think it’s fair to doubt whether focusing on the PC is the most profitable way to go. They’re making a game that probably won’t run very well on most peoples PCs.

@9 Launching in October is somewhat of a risk. They’re going to have to keep the hype going until people head out for Black Friday and really spend their savings. Should be possible with the promised marketing budget though.

@10 That’s what the gameplay footage has me thinking so far. I love the animations and all, but if it’s just going to be BC2 with all its shortcomings, then I don’t really care how pretty it looks.

Jets are probably gonna turn it up a notch though, that’s no small feat.

This is the proof that your MW3 will be a shitty port and that you dont care about pc.

Personally i dont hate any console manufacturer, developer and people involve in the gaming industry, but this man is testing my will like no other, please stop pushing my buttons kotick, you know what they said the best word is the one not spoken, which means keep your thoughts to yourself, i think you are the only one who likes them in the end, i do recomend you go to the EA booth and see all the versions running including the consoles ones, which look great IMHO.

    #21 4 years ago

BF3 has no chance against MW3.

EA are using the PC version as a selling tool to lie to console players as if that is actually how the console verison looks like.

  25. BULArmy

If the ame is awesomly moddable as BF2, BF3 can iutsold MW3 1:100 on the PC. On other hand I also think that MW3 will sell better, it is just much more casual. Hell I have also fun with it, it don’t make me want to trow my mouse all over the place, like BF2 or even BC2 made me and they are wastly superior to any COD game.

If I can be Mr Pachter for a second I will tell the MW3 will sell 10 mil. and BF3 will sell 6 mil. or something like that. Still BF3 is my choice and I am specially building new rig for that game.

    #25 4 years ago

Why are people bring up subscription-based games to show how well PC games sell? Thats money being taken from the same players ever month, not individual sales. Last time i checked BF3 wasnt a sub game.

Oh by the way; MMO’s fail pretty hard too, loads have closed over the years, and the ones going free?; Lets just say its not because the publishers have run out of space in the bank…

PC is the home of the FPS, it’s where FPS came from, it’s where FPS feels right. I am one of the so called small audiences who will be getting BF3, on my PC. Better graphics, better controls, etc.

A smaller audience? You mean less people own a £1k+ PC than £200 console? Norly?

Quality, not quantity, my dear. Clearly he only cares about sales, and that’s something that will lead us to shit-game-city in a few years time if everyone else thinks the same.

Start on the PC, port to consoles; any other way is an insult to both the PC gamer and the console gamer.

    #32 4 years ago
  33. Cozzy

MW3 will sell more just because it’s Call of Duty, which is a shame because BF3 looks so much better.

    #33 4 years ago

@27: I don’t care if it release on console of PC, but the way he’s talking is too stupid: insult the platforms’ (PC or console or whatever) customers. If the PC sales is good, and the consoles sales is poor, so can you say “Because PC game sales are poor” or “Because consoles game sales are poor”?

    #34 4 years ago
  35. polygem

they will both sell very very well. mw3 will most likely sell better but they will both be extremely strong in sales/ what? really. i prefer bf as a franchise. but i adore cod as well. it´s a great shooter and you know what? i´ll just get both. that simple…so what? (again)…all the guys saying pc is the only way to play shooters: that´s bullshit. plain and simple: BULLSHIT. i play videogames since the 80´s and believe me, i played a lot of fps on the pc. i can assure you: fps on consoles are very enjoyable – give it a chance and stop the hate. i love the 360 pad, it´s a great tool to play games with. it´s good competiton on consoles online as well. sure you wouldn´t stand a chance against a guy with mouse and keyboards, but noone uses this setup on the 360 so everything is cool…and fun (and for the fun and competition i play shootergames). please just relax and let people enjoy their games on the platform they want to play them on. consoles are great. if you prefer the pc. great. but please stop telling me you are the king of fps and more skilled because you use a pc. you are not. if you are good in fps games you are good on every platform…

    #35 4 years ago
  36. DSB

How is stating the fact that the PC audience is smaller an insult? Is he supposed to lie? :P

Honestly, the whole platform pride thing is just pathetic. I’ve been playing PC games since the beginning of the 90′s, but I’m not blind. And the fact that my platform is marginalized doesn’t make it less fun to play games on.

Most of the old PC genres are either gone, consolized, or left to small time players. If people had cared that wouldn’t be the case.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Gekidami

^ Indeed. Though with PC fanboys being the zealous lot they are, outrage over this really shouldnt surprise anyone.

Whats funny is that Kotick probably didnt even mean much by it, he just pointed out the fact that EA are holding out on showing the version(s) that will undoubtedly sell the most. We’re nowhere near the stuff EA has said about CoD.

    #37 4 years ago
  38. Erthazus

Gekidami is such a huge PS3 fanboy and bobby Kotick defender that it’s freakin hillarious.

“Oh by the way; MMO’s fail pretty hard too, loads have closed over the years, and the ones going free?; Lets just say its not because the publishers have run out of space in the bank…

buy yourself a brain, seriously. Just go to the and look for yourself how much MMOS have defunct and how much MMOs is on the market.
PC is the largest audience for gaming. It’s a fact. Don’t even try to tell me that i’m PC fanboy because it’s a damn fact.
From WOW to Social games from Facebook.

“How is stating the fact that the PC audience is smaller an insult?”

PC audience is not smaller. It’s bigger, but if Call Of duty is not so popular on the PC does not mean that it’s smaller, it’s just not much of a market plays this game.

World Of warcraft – 10 million.

@xino, “EA are using the PC version as a selling tool to lie to console players as if that is actually how the console verison looks like.”

so after pirated BC2 EA have LEADING SKU to PC for Battlefield 3.

    where is your logic?

    #38 4 years ago
  39. DSB

@38 World of Warcraft isn’t on consoles, so the consoles don’t have a chance to outsell it, but even if you count the userbase, CoD still easily outsells it.

The most the PC is ever going to achieve on a multiplatform title is roughly a third of the overall platform audience going on past performance. It’s quite clear from the financial statements.

    #39 4 years ago
  40. Erthazus

I like how console fanboys say: EA LIES TO US!!11 BF3 on consoles will be shit!11

Aha, oh yeah… you know guys… i’m playing each Call Of duty game with 60fps, 1080p, MSAA, AA with better textures, shadows and filters.

so you can shut up. No matter what (port or lead SKU) PC version these days feels like an exclusive game compared to console (except for some really cheap ports)

@DSB, COD outsells combined with PS3 and 360. There is a difference in platforms.
don’t just count WOW. WOW is one of the something.

console base is basically 100 million (PS3 and Xbox 360). but PC? It’s one billion users of Microsoft Windows, not to mention about MAC.

    #40 4 years ago
  41. Gekidami

So a straw man and a red herring walk into fallacy-inn…

“Console base is basically 100 million (PS3 and Xbox 360). but PC? It’s one billion users of Microsoft Windows, not to mention about MAC.”
Except my grandma doesnt use her PC to play games. Moot point.

    Non-MMORPG revenue, Activision, 2010:

    PC: 325 million dollars
    Wii: 408 million dollars
    Playstation 3: 854 million dollars
    Xbox 360: 1033 million dollars

In other words, for Activision, without the MMORPG market, the PC is 2,6 less profitable than the Playstation 3, and 3,1 times less profitable than the Xbox 360.

    Let’s stop kidding ourselves, eh?

    Actually, let’s not, let’s do 2009 too:

    PC: 164 million
Playstation 2 (Note the number 2): 174 million
    Playstation 3: 584 million
    Xbox 360: 857 million

Actually, Activision made more money on the PS2 than they did on the PC by the end of 2009. Which was the year of Modern Warfare 2. Which didn’t appear on the Playstation 2 at all.

If we take the Steam hardware survey and compare it to the recommended requirements for BF3, you get this:

OS (Windows 7 64-bit): 40% of surveyed PCs
CPU (Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU): 42% of surveyed PCs
RAM (4GB): 50% of surveyed PCs
GFX (DirectX 11 Nvidia or AMD ATI card, GeForce GTX 460, Radeon HD 6850): 11,6% of surveyed PCs (Yaaay, my PC is in the 12th percentile!)
VRAM – 1 GB: 39% of surveyed PCs
Hard drive – 15 GB for disc version or 10 GB for digital version: 39% of surveyed PCs

It’s not 100% accurate, but it’s the closest you’ll come to seeing what’s actually out there.

Certainly very, very few people will be enjoying DX11.

@44 I’m not sure if they release the numbers of subscribers but they made 1,23 billion dollars on WoW in 2010. I just skipped straight to the revenue.

I’m not about to read through the whole damn thing :P
