Sony 3D monitor and glasses announced – now with images

Tuesday, 7th June 2011 01:50 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Sony announced during its E3 press event that due to the more than 100 3D games on PlayStation, the firm plans to release two new 3D hardware products: a PlayStation branded 3D monitor and glasses, all of which will be available in a bundle with Resistance 3.

The monitor has a 24-inch display developed specifically for the PS3 in full HD and 3D, and it allows two people playing a game to see separate screens each – which means no more split-screens as you’re both looking at the same screen, but will see different images.

Apparently, the display’s “quad-speed frame sequential display technology” is able to minimise crosstalk distortion. Okay. It also sports a 5000:1 contrast ratio, 176 degree viewing angle and 4ms GTG average response time. Not bad for a 35mm thick system.

On the sound side, the display will pack a subwoofer as well as stereo speakers for 2.1 surround, but there’s no word on audio out for fancier systems.

Connectivity wise, the display has two HDMI-in ports – one for your PS3, and one for your choice of device – as well as component-in.

A power save mode, quick-start feature, and support for the BluRay remote round out the display’s feature list.

The new 3D glasses are powered by active-shutter technology, and are available separately at $70 each. Each recharges in three minutes for up to three hours use thanks to a lithium ion battery.

The display, glasses and required cabling will be available in the US this fall, including in a bundle with Resistance 3 for $499.

Seems like a good display, except for the edge-lit LED. Back-lit is better. I would even have prefer back-lit CCFL than edge-lit LED. Back-lit LED cost more but offer the best PQ for LED lighting.

But plasma is still the best, until good oled.

24 inch is a bit small for HD even 720, and 3D. But good price I might get one if it comes to uk for under 500.

Can I use this system/glasses with my new Sony 55EX725 or do I have to use this small 24 screen thing there for my ultimate splitt-screen adventure?

@2 so what would a person looking at the screen without glasses see… a blurry single image or a split screen. I still don’t understand

Well without glasses it will be 3 layers of an image/person…. in your case it’s blurry…

@5, I think the 2 player system is exclusive to the TV. I remember reading about Sony getting the Patent a while back

@24 it better freaking well come here for under £500.
500 dollars is £304 so we’ll probably end up paying about £350 im guessing
