Japanese charts – PSP still king, Akiba's Trip takes software

Media Create has released the unit sales chart for Japanese hardware and software for the week ending May 22, and it finds PSP still reigning supreme and Akiba's Trip debuting in first place on the software chart.

Vampire hunting takes the chart

Acquire's latest debuted and took the top spot for the week with the vampire hunting title Akiba's Trip. The game takes place in the future where vampire roam the streets during the day and blend in easily with the populous. Sounds neat.

Koei Tecmo's titular Dead of Alive: Dimensions also had a strong debut on 3DS, moving 23,078 units. Portal 2 also landed in Japan, with the PS3 version landing in the six spot with 8,942 units moved and the 360 version landing at number 19 moving 3,468 units.

Pokemon Black and White was back in the top 10 this week, with sales up 9 percent over the prior week.

However, previous hard hitter Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 dropped to third place, with sale falling 7 percent over last week.

All in all, there were five new offerings in the top 20, six if you count the two console versions of Portal 2.

PSP stays on top despite hardware drop

PSP continued its reign at the top of the hardware charts this week, despite hardware sales falling over the week prior. Combined unit sales for all hardware came in at 80,559 for the week, compared to 88,215 last week.

Still, PSP was the clear winner and moved 30,528 units. Other Sony devices, PS3, PS2,and PSPgo moved 12,935 units, 1,129 units, and 65 units, respectively.

3DS were down for the week by a little over 1,000 units, but life-to-date, the new handheld is chugging along with 1,013,259 units moved - which is also it's year-to-date total.

Enterbrain said last week it expects the handheld to be the clear winner for the year once it hits its stride; however, it has a worthy competitor in PSP which is only 63,566 units behind the new system for the year. Things should get more interesting once NGP is released, should it hit the Japanese market by the end of the year.

Other, older, DS family members moved a combined 10,272 units for the week, with DSi XL moving the most with 5,176 units sold.

Wii sales were a bit flat as well, as the console moved an extra 631 units over last week’s 10,889 units.

Xbox 360 sales were down 557 units for the week despite the release of Portal 2 on the console.
