Report: Android market share at 36% compared to Apple's 18.8%

According to figures drummed up by research group Gartner, sales of Android beat out iOS during Q1 2011.

The report states that Android's market share during the quarter was up 9.6 percent from the previous quarter to 36 percent, compared to Apple's 18.8 percent, which was up from last year's 15.3 percent.

Symbian was the most successful of the lot though, with a 44.2 percent market share, which is even a 27.4 percent drop for the year with Nokia moving over to using Windows 7.

"Every time a user downloads a native app to their smartphone or puts their data into a platform's cloud service, they are committing to a particular ecosystem and reducing the chances of switching to a new platform," claims the Gartner report.

"As well as putting their devices in the context of a broader ecosystem, manufacturers must start to see their smartphones as part of a computing continuum."
