Capcom: Keep E3 expectations “in check,” but DMC a “maybe”

Capcom has said that a new showing of DMC may come at E3, but added that fans of the publisher may want to keep expectations on what to expect for the show to a minimal.

DMC, Ninja Theory’s reboot to Devil May Cry, was announced at Tokyo Game Show last September, but was met with a hostile reception from fans over the look of main character Dante. Since last year, it hasn’t been seen, but LA sounds like a good time to bring it back, right?

“Maybe, we’ll see,” Capcom US VP Christian Svensson said in a recent Ask Capcom live-stream. “You’re going have to wait and see.”

But Svensson insists that there’ll be no show-stopping announcements from the publisher at the show, having made those in Miami last month at Captivate. Basically, any expectations from Capcom that you may have? Keep them in line.

“We’d like to probably keep our E3 plans a bit closer to the vest,” he said.

“I don’t know that we’ll be shocking anyone with what we’re talking about at E3. Most of our major announcements were made at Captivate. There’ll be some light shed on things that we previously announced that we didn’t show much of at Captivate, updates for some things we did show at Captivate.

“But keep your expectations in check and everyone will probably come out happy. That doesn’t mean that we won’t have more things to talk about in the not so distant future, just to set expectations.”

Back to Devil May Cry, it’s the series’ tenth anniversary this year. So is there any plans? Nothing to talk about yet, according to Svennson.

There’s a full video of the Ask Capcom session here.

I still can’t believe that capcom would let anyone to ruin the DMC name. Much of us hated the “new” dante design, because they are blind, and werent told about the story involving Dante. I’m really looking forward to this title, since i played with 3 and 4 for countless days on DMD / equivalent level etc. Loved it like hell.

    Oh and for the complainers:
The new Dante hair has white “spots” on it. Theory: he’s hair will be recolored at the end of the game, it must be some kind of a process or some sort.

The worst thing Capcom could do would be to unveil a Dante thats been changed to appease the *outraged* fans.

Simple rule: It’s YOUR baby, NOT some over entitled fan’s.

P.s. This doesn’t apply to you Lucas! You killed Star Wars! KILLED IT!!!

@4 LOLs and that’s exactly what happened with InFamous 2, I think the best Cole was the E3 2010 version

What Devil May Cry 4 showed, was that they needed to change something, approach the franchise in a different way. For that, you have to have faith and step away from what came before. Capcom, much to their credit, have done that. They’ve chosen to embrace an outside view of what DMC could be, under their overseeing and leadership. At the point they show gameplay, and it proves to be disappointing, then I’ll join the nay-sayers on this. Until then, though, I’ll just see what Capcom have for us, at E3.

On another note, first Valve, now Capcom – anyone else out there that wants to piss all over people’s anticipation for the biggest game trade show in the west?

I do like the change of direction, DMC needed this, capcom dont listen to us, keep doing it the way you want it, i prefer a new different thing from time to time, even if it looks gay or gothic, what is wrong with that?, i prefer that rather than devil may cry 3 all over again 20 more times.

@7 Agreed the original Dante was much more butch & manly…..

@3 Actually, the early designs resembled the original Dante to an extent, but Capcom wanted to keep changing their versions until it was completely different:
I assume this was when they were under the belief of doing a reboot. For such a big fan of the series, you didn’t do much research on this.

@3 I’m confused. You hate the design but you’re looking forward to the game? The entire game is the product of Capcom considering that they wanted Dante to be completely different. As for the white hair, I myself have seen the patches of hair, but Ninja Theory is adamant that DMC isn’t cool now. So does it really make sense for them to go back to a “non-cool” design at the end of the game? I guess they could make the hair white again and only change that, but on the other side of the coin they could keep with his skunk-hairstyle for the entire game. We just don’t know enough.

Seriously, you gotta give Capcom and Ninja Theory a lot of credits for this. Gotta take some balls to simply ignore the “Fan” outrage and just move on. I have more respect for people that would take such a big risk, instead of developers like Sucker Punch and CD Projekt Red.

@12: This “We don’t know enough” is the reason why we need more information.

I’m still bitter over that! =(

i think most frustration rather comes from the fact that the game doesn’t seem cannon than the character design itself
plot holes which fans hoped would be filled in the next DMC as well as other characters from previous games which they hoped could be playable.
This DMC doesn’t seem to leave room for these. It’s a Reboot.
Resident Evil almost answered all of it’s questions, the story seemed to be brought to an end now it’s fans are asking for a reboot. Not with DMC though

@10Japanese Capcom does not recognize it. DMC Japanese staff does not recognize it.
    They objected
It is American Capcom to have done it.
