The Witcher 2 reviews start hitting, get rounded up

Tuesday, 17 May 2011 18:54 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Geralt, our favorite medieval monstrosity-hunter, is back in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The game is out today on PC, and some of the first reviews are finally starting to appear.

According to Gamespot, it looks as though some discs of the game were unplayable due to the retail CD key, as the game couldn’t yet be activated online to be reviewed. This may be the case with some other sites as well, so we’ll add more review scores as they come in.

So far – it’s getting all 9′s and above from the folks who got some hands on time with it already, though.

It’s the best game i’ve ever played PERIOD. Great story, great sound, stunnig graphics (cryengine 3 an its Crysis 2 is a baby besides REDENGINE), great gameplay, great level of design and custumization (never seen a world so beautiful made)…..and it has something that few games have : diversity….

Wish i could spend my money on a new graphic card so i could play this game, as it is now, i can’t waste my money on that.

@1: Guess they’ll fix the poor optimization, as they did with Witcher 1.

@8: I wouldn’t risk it. Buddy of mine bought it and it … doesn’t work properly, he has a Radeon HD4XXX-Something and the only thing you see are his eyes and everything else is just a mish-mash of colours. So it doesn’t work properly.

  12. Erthazus

I’m playing it right now and holy damn… this game is fantastic.

I love it. The only thing that pisses me off is that dead bodies disappear after 10 seconds. I mean really… 10 freakin seconds.

Game is gorgeous. Can’t talk about the story because i’m only two hours in it.

@DarkElfa, because it is strictly a news site and it should be that way.

    @11 It’s a news site.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. Erthazus

to sum everything: Witcher 2 is UNCHARTED 2 of RPG games :D

and as a PC player i’m so happy with this. Every UI and interface is PC only.

everything on max. I will make few screenshots soon just for fun.

    #14 4 years ago
  15. Hunam

@11 Because they write news, not reviews. They do the occasional article, but VG247 is more an industry blog than a games blog. They want to follow what’s happening rather than saying how good the end product is. I think that’s the reason I like the place so much, outside of a few cases their opinion doesn’t get in the way, it’s just the news.

Is the combat system awful because you actually have to think before you start a fight, and then think during the fight instead of just button mashing?

The combat system takes a little to get use too, but when you have to combine weapons, spells and items to defeat groups of creature, thats all good in my book.

    #27 4 years ago
  28. Christopher Jack

@24, No, I consider it awful because I just don’t like it, feels terribly outdated & clunky in comparison to every other action game-this is just my opinion, don’t bother arguing with me, we all have different tastes.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that nearly every other aspect is great, just one small frustration can have a large impact on the overall experiance.

    #28 4 years ago
  29. YoungZer0

@28: So your opinion is simply “I don’t like it.” Instead of “This is why i don’t like it:”

    Really helps taking you serious.

I think #19 is probably talking about the combat from the original, which kinda sucked hard.

    @Hunam, it’s actually beautiful.

I’m making screenshots from FRAPS and we all know that with “fraps” program you won’t get the maximum juice out of the screenshots.

  40. Dralen

This is seriously one bad ass motherf***ing game! Not only is it graphically superb, the gameplay is sublime and it’s also a real challenge. This game will really punish you for making an error in combat, but even so “wow!” does it make you want to go back again and again to progress further into the game. It could definitely do with some more patching to optimize it a bit better, but other than that it is the best PC game I have played in a few years now.

  44. BULArmy

For me the optimization is good, I can play the game with 4 yo parts. Intel Core Duo 1.86Ghz, 2GB Ram and GeForce 8600GT. And even not everything is set on low and have pretty stable framerate. Also some of the story are given with absurd comic book like style and they botched the funniest minigame Dice Poker. As for the game is pretty good, but not the second coming of Jesus. Also the game really look beautiful if you can run it properly, I think it is the new benchmark for PC gaming.

  45. mathare92

Damn you, Erthazus and your damn screenshots! *shakes fist at screen* :)

Playing through the first one with a 256mb 9400GT on medium settings is cumbersome enough; this would probably just give me a “Are you fucking serious?” screen on installation.

I bet it’ll be this vs Portal 2 vs Battlefield 3 vs Skyrim vs GuildWars2 for all the PC accolades at the end of the year. /CaptainObvious

I tried the game on my laptop, but as runs like crap. It’s do-able with everything, absolutely every single setting on low but still not that nice to play. It still looks damn fine with everything on low though.

If only i had the money for a new pc, hell…i’d do it. This is the game i am sure to love to death. I’m sure if i want to be able to play it on high settings…i’d need to buy/build a complete new pc..and the costs would be around 1000 euros..wouldn’t surprise me.

This game btw is a new graphical benchmark. Games like Crysis looks like garbage. I won’t mention console games, because they are not even close to Crysis anyway.

Just try to get to the forest.

THE BEST forest in videogames. Hands down. Not just graphicaly, but design of it is pure genious.

This makes me think MS/Sony have waited too long to put out new hardware. It would be nice if future hardware could be easily upgradable. I know system add ons havn’t always been glowing in the past. But expanding system ram and graphic ability makes a lot of sense. If it could be done for a reasonable cost.

But I guess putting out a new system that is 100% Backwards compatible is a lot like achieving the same type of thing.

Its just that next to a growing selection of PC games, the current crop of current generation games on consoles are lacking.

Not trolling, its just obvious. Consoles are aging at this point. Ten year life cycles are too long imo.

    #66 4 years ago
  67. RandomTiger

@66 Allowing upgrades to consoles just causes fragmentation of your audience, its bad enough with different platforms, controllers and harddisc options.

Expanding ram and graphics for a console isn’t as easy as it might sound, this article is interesting as it shows how difficult it is just to pick the right hardware for a console, never mind make it upgradable:

Frankly making upgradable consoles for a market that has shown raw power isn’t the major selling point just seems like madness to me.
