Xbox 360 version of L.A. Noire will take up three discs

Rockstar has told Kotaku that L.A. Noire is so large, that the Xbox 360 version will span three discs.

The PS3 version fill up on entire 25GB Blu-Ray disc.

“L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game,” said the firm’s Jeronimo Barrera. “To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs.”

Just because the game will encompass three discs, doesn’t mean the game itself will last for weeks on end or anything though – the size was due in part to the MotionScan data used during development which requires quite a bit of disc space.

However, don’t worry about getting carpel tunnel over changing the game discs.

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free,”said Barrera. “In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.

“Throughout development, we created lots of great cases, the bulk of which were central to the main story of Cole Phelps and his rise through the ranks of the LAPD, alongside other cases that felt more like strong stand-alone episodes. This gave us a powerful main story, and left us with quality extra content that we wanted to put out as DLC, that would slot seamlessly into the existing game.”

L.A. Noire lands on 360 and PS3 in a couple weeks.

@48

Of course it’s good to have more space, but at this late stage in both these console’s lifecycles it really isn’t an issue.

Final Fantasy 13 (which i still believe was a shit conversion), Lost Planet 2, RAGE and now this are the only games i can really recall were devs have stated more space would be benificial.

Even if the 360 had Bluray, the age of it’s other hardware would still expose it’s limitations…

RAM is the biggest limiting factor currently. And it’s not just about pop-ins. It’s about number of objects, size of the world and many other variables that need to be stored in memory that you don’t necessary see on screen.

Programmers are struggling to try to fill the RAM efficiently but they have to make sacrifice. Just look at the latest Motorstorm articles where the devs said the biggest challenge was to try to find a way to store everything they need in memory, same with Crytek.

This gen DVD is able to do the job. Next gen it won’t. But currently the main problem is RAM.

edit: And all of what #49 said.

This doesn’t matter one bit. I see alot of people on the GT jumping on this and dissing the Xbox 360, but they haven’t read the article. It’s no big deal, will only occur twice during the game…again, no big deal.

Ah, good old homophobic slurs. What a fine example of a gamer you are Mr #53. Truly.

As for the RAM and storage space argument: ANY developer will happily accept more of anything. Processing cycles, data bandwidth, RAM or storage space. The argument of “filling RAM efficiently” is so ass-backwards it’s a joke. Any muppet can fill up RAM. Your grandma can use up all the RAM on her PC just running her virus scanner!

And 1gb, 2, 4 or 8, 25 or 50. It’ll always end up being the same thing: those last 16 bytes are always the most precious. ;)

@54 People make it a big deal in accordance with their agenda. People make a blurred texture that’s on screen for a 60th of a second into life and death. They claim it’s the end of the world if you spend 7 minutes installing data to your hard drive. They cut their wrists because a battery life only last 6 hours instead of 8. Find a molehill, make it into a mountain so you can climb it and preach your sermon from the top of it.

All bull really imo.
I have both but if I was still a 360 only owner I just couldn’t imagine been bothered about this.
Is there online? OOps hope not. ;)

I mean I know a lot of PS3 only owners are getting the old dt,s right now but relax PSN will be back soon, very soon.

@55 You do make a good point but RAM would really support graphics on a home consoles. It will allow for a game that can use more animations/enemies drawn on screen/draw distances and more.

Sure developers will always complain about something but RAM would highly help a game especially when animations, AI and graphics are getting more sophisticated and need more memory to write.

Nice try but troll harder ;) You guys really think PSN being down affects my ability to sit here and finish Crysis 2 campaign or FFXIII or RDR or how about all the other great exclusives SONY has drop “SO FAR” this year offline. When it comes down to it I rather collect trophies offline any day than get achievements online anytime. I have 2 360′s which have not been turned on days before the PSN going down…..go ahead check my last log-in time for yourself.

Just goes to show you PS3 owners are in a bliss of the good ol’ PS2 days. Enjoying great exclusive titles. We understand LIVE fanatics have to keep playing COD until Activison releases the next COD because M$ can’t produce shit for that system (1st party wise…well except for Kinect trash)….wonder when the next exclusive for 360 is coming out and I hope its not another Halo or Gears (oh right you guys got a GEARS 3 beta to hold you over until fall)

…..YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN!

(Cranks Lina Termini back up and proceeds to finish Crysis 2) :)

@59 it was $199 and had no chance lol. It reminded me of the Dreamcast DVD player combo certain retailers tried to sell to keep SEGA in business LMAO! Once you hire Peter Moore you’re doomed to fail. Why do you think M$ got rid of his ass. As soon as RRoD quiet down his ass fled like a hoe in bed with a married man caught red handed by the wife :D

Anyway I think you can get those HD-DVD add ons for $5 at Costco :)

The 360′s HD-DVD add-on couldn’t be used for games, only movies.

MS going back to the HD DVD would have to make it an add on (over priced one at that)and then MS would have to make it an option because you can’t force the consumer to pay for the mandatory upgrade so the publishers have more space on the disc.
Btw going to HD DVD would not stop pirating not in the slightest, you just have to flash the console to play pirated games.

Hmmm..I may switch my Pre-Buy of this to Blu-Ray. Does anyone one know, is there like a 2 hour install on the PS3 or anything?

Actually, can you install all 3 Disc of the 360 Version and then just play with 1 disc in the Drive?

@74
What game has a 2 hour install that has been released in the last 2 years?

“Actually, can you install all 3 Disc of the 360 Version and then just play with 1 disc in the Drive?”

No you still have to swap no matter what.

It worked in ME2 and any other title perfectly, disc swapping won’t be a problem here either.

OrbitMonkey

@74 It has a 6 hour install, up to 10 min long loading times, bad textures, the dualshock gives you spina bifida… Oh & Sony give your details to Anonymous… but it is on 1 disc ;)

#78

viralshag

@75, GT5 was pretty long from what I remember. I don’t think it was pushing two hours but it was one of the longest install times I can remember. I think MGS4 might have been next.

Like 76 said, ME2 was across two disc and that was the most minor of inconveniences at best. Considering the amount of hours I logged before needing to swap discs it really didn’t make any difference to me. It seems to be the same case with LA Noire.

So if that is the case and it doesn’t interrupt my game often then I really don’t see an issue.

38 You didnt get my point neither, maybe i didnt explain myself good, what iam trying to say is that, till this day there is no game on the ps3 that did suffer for the 360 translation, i mean all the games that use almost the full capacity of the blue ray disc, (and i still believe that till this day there is not game that uses all the blue ray capacity , maybe they are few games that uses the full capacity of the disc space, but the mayority of the ps3 games dont), like final fantasy XIII that didnt suffer for this, i mean the ps3 iteration came the way it was intended and did run beautifully on the ps3, what square Enix did was put it on the 360 with multidisc game, like the L.A. Noire game that also for what is said till this day, didnt suffer for this also, the ps3 version i mean.

But on the other hand there is a few games that were translated to the ps3 from the xbox that did suffer for the difficulty of the ps3 hardware, this is not secret games like FEAR, Bayonetta, Red dead, were a little bit better on 360, becuase of this, this is not a bad thing like i said all the consoles have their quirks, or inconviniences an that doesnt make one shittier or badder than the other, thats why i did tried to say, iam no bashing neither of the consoles, what iam stating is there is not perfect console, all of them have their inconviniences.
P.S and i will be getting this game on the PS3, because it was the lead paltform, not because of the disc issue

There really just isn’t an issue with multiple discs, the only reason this thread is so big is because all the fanboys are flaring up.
Multiple discs can still have exactly the same amount of of space that one blu-ray does. If the developers can afford multi-disc, then it means shit all whether you get it on 360 or PS3.

THREE DISCS? AS THIS MEANS I CAN’T SIT ON MY ARSE AND PLAY THE ENTIRE GAME FROM START TO FINISH WITHOUT MOVING, I’LL HAVE TO GET OFF MY HIGH HORSE TWICE TO CHANGE DISKS, ROCKSTAR JUST TURNED THIS INTO INSTA-NOTBUY FROM INSTA-BUY.

@ Lounds,

That’s a really good point. I totally agree except for the “9″ part! :P I’m much more of a 7/8 fan. :D

I was planning on getting this on the PS3 anyway as I plan to get Brink for the 360. I’m weird in the way I like to share the love between my consoles. The only thing now putting me off that is PSN, my PS3 just feels hollow and empty without it.
