Xbox 360 version of L.A. Noire will take up three discs

Thursday, 5 May 2011 20:31 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Rockstar has told Kotaku that L.A. Noire is so large, that the Xbox 360 version will span three discs.

The PS3 version fill up on entire 25GB Blu-Ray disc.

“L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game,” said the firm’s Jeronimo Barrera. “To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs.”

Just because the game will encompass three discs, doesn’t mean the game itself will last for weeks on end or anything though – the size was due in part to the MotionScan data used during development which requires quite a bit of disc space.

However, don’t worry about getting carpel tunnel over changing the game discs.

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free,”said Barrera. “In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.

“Throughout development, we created lots of great cases, the bulk of which were central to the main story of Cole Phelps and his rise through the ranks of the LAPD, alongside other cases that felt more like strong stand-alone episodes. This gave us a powerful main story, and left us with quality extra content that we wanted to put out as DLC, that would slot seamlessly into the existing game.”

L.A. Noire lands on 360 and PS3 in a couple weeks.

  6. ManuOtaku

Well i was getting this one on the PS3, because it was the lead platform since the very beginning, so this doenst matter, and even if it does take three disk i wouldnt mind getting the 360 version, changing discs is not that hard IMHO
P.S but i grant that they need a new format at least for the next gen

    #6 4 years ago
  7. theevilaires

Wait is this even with that extra 1GB of space they claim they can get out of these new 360 disc? (or maybe that program is still going) In any case its so funny when you look back 4 years ago and people were saying Blu-ray was a waste, SONY is stupid….laughs on you jackasses.

Damn can you imagine if disc 2 ever gets lost or damaged they can’t finish the game on 360.

    #7 4 years ago
  8. jdfoster00

This Is why you buy a ps3 :) Xbox is shit cause it limits so many devs… Don’t try and argue with me cause im right :) Also only allows devs 7-8 gb when the ps3 allows 50gb! Sort you’re self out you cheap skating micro-soft!

    lol this is hilarious.

I cant get up from a couch to swap discs.

If any of you here would of lived when you had to swap floppy discs on the PC for games some consisting of over 5 discs or when you had played some games back then that consisted of even 7 DVD discs just to play, you would see this is no big deal.

Sure one disc and not getting up to change a disc is nicer but its not THAT bad.

Some people finding flaws in certain technology to hate something so miniscule is hilarity at its best.

    Please, I am enjoying this.

  13. Bloodyghost

@5 Blu Ray isnt something Sony made. The NextBox or even the NextWii can use Blu Ray. Sony on the other hand is still investing in that TB per disc format right now if I remember correctly.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. ManuOtaku

#8 with all due respect, this issue does not limit the devs, because they have the option of adding multiple discs, thats what they did with the Final Fantasy XIII version of the game the ps3 game didnt suffer anything because of this, square enix only made the transition to the 360 by adding multiple discs.
But you know what do limits the developers, difficult to program hardware, that means more people, more money and more effort, which often means bad iterations of games, therefore for me all platforms have their inconviniences which doesnt make any platform lesser than the other, or shittier for that matter IMHO.

    #14 4 years ago
  15. Dr.Ghettoblaster

Ok, in defense of X360, nobody gave a shit about multiple discs last gen, funny to see people poke fun at it now really. I’ll be getting the PS3 version cause that’s my platform of choice, but don’t put the 360 down cause of this, that’s just fucking stupid.

@10. EXACTLY. If this were a PC game, nobody would be saying shit.

    #15 4 years ago
  16. theevilaires

@8 XBOX360 isn’t shit don’t start that nonsense. The shit is their loyal fanboys who refuse to accept the machine is just inferior to the PS3 in so many ways but that doesn’t make it a bad system. 3 disc in this time and age is ridiculous and why they PS2 went from purple back CDs to DVDs. Sony plans for the future but M$ was only thinking short term as they only wanted to beat SONY to market.

Well they did and to the embarrassment now that their console is on thin ice when it comes to storage capabilities. Even though the games can be stored and played from the HDD the disc still needs to be in the system so theres no getting around disc swapping.

My point to you is its still a good machine but we as gamers should be encouraging devs to take advantage of the PS3′s superiority and ultimately focus on the 360 as a secondary console so this gen can last longer and we won’t face high premature cost with M$ trying to start another gen too soon.

Agreed, the 360 is a great console. I love mine thanks to Gears, ME1 and Fable.

    #17 4 years ago
  18. xxJPRACERxx

Some of the comments here are funny…

Sure extra space is always welcome, but the DVD drive in the 360 is not a limiting factor, not this gen.

    #18 4 years ago
  19. Dralen

Wow! That is fooking massive. I am so glad I own both consoles when thing’s like this happen.

    #19 4 years ago
  20. theevilaires

@18 yes it is a limiting factor. Games are usually shorter now than last gen. Sure you can blame that on the ONLINE nature of this gen but genres like RPGs and even racers show proof that DVD’s are not enough anymore.

Examples: Project Gotham 4 and Lost Oddysee(which came out very close to the 360′s launch and used 3 disc out the gate)

Like I said SONY plans for the future M$ plans for profits.

    #20 4 years ago
  21. theevilaires

    @19 +1

Interesting on seeing the XBOX fanboys not being the first to comment on (what seems) a “negative” 360 topic.

Pay attention to the patterns of this site people thats all I ask.

    #21 4 years ago
  22. Prof.Dr.Moertel

well, then I have to switch the discs every 10 hours… who cares?

    #22 4 years ago
  23. jdfoster00

Im sorry @14 But when come across devs who do multiplatform for example cod… They could make an beasty game but for some reason they allways keep one disc (so are limited to 8gb by the xbox) Costs apply to the dev and a published like activi$ion don’t want to spend that extra money to produce multiple discs (put the content on). And the xbox DOES limit devs… How can you deny this? The xbox sole purpose was to beat sony to market to get an better market share and where in short term… (2years to make xbox) (sony had 4 years on time to develop and creat ps3) @8 too How am i talking nonsense when this is fact? @12 been STRONG rumours of the next gta being a ps3 exclusive (rumoours have come in as sony stope the exclusivity of LA NOIRE AND AGENT so are they investing in gta instead? IDK.. @5 Blu Ray isnt something Sony made. The NextBox or even the NextWii can use Blu Ray. Sony on the other hand is still investing in that TB per disc format right now if I remember correctly. YES But they IMPLEMENTED DUAL LAYER BLURAY (50GB) WII IS (RUMOUR) ONE LAYER WHICH IS 25GB.

    #23 4 years ago
  24. jdfoster00

@17 3 games.. exactly a one of them wasn’t exclusive to micro soft and had to be on two discs..

    #24 4 years ago
  25. Bloodyghost

@19 again its all about preferences but looking from Red Dead Redemption and GTA4, I am wondering if the Xbox will be the more superior platform on this.

But remember this game was intended as a exclusive and this is Team Bondi.

    Like I said, just preferences.

I rather play it on my xbox then PS3, while Portal 2 is superior on my Ps3.

Also this junk on the disc space limitations is dumb talk, Sony clearly thought a head about how long its lifespan would be, MS didnt. MS probably thought that there wasnt going to be a Kinect extension to keep it going.

Unless MS does the same thing next gen, the only BIG problem is console graphic and RAM limitations. Thats across the board rather then one.

    #25 4 years ago
  26. Bloodyghost

@24 jdfoster00, MS isnt as strong as a provider as Sony is on First Party Exclusives.

MS is more efficient at getting Multiplatform games with exclusive content or the better version on its platforms.

Just recently did Sony pick up on this ordeal.

    #26 4 years ago
  27. ManuOtaku

#23 I am not talking nonsense, FF XIII didnt suffer for this, the ps3 version came the way it was intended, you didnt get my point, do i need to put all the games that suffer the transition between the 360 to the ps3, because of all the difficulties third developers have with the structure of the PS3, man i dont want to put them here, but believe me they are few of them.

And also name one game besides Metal gear solid 4 that use half the size of the Blue ray disc, i think there is none at least no game has use all the blue ray capacity till this day.

    #27 4 years ago
  28. monkeygourmet

After recently getting a PS3 and enjoying some of the exclusives for the system, it still annoys me that people seem to think changing discs on the 360 is an issue whatsoever…

I’ll still be getting this on the 360 for a few reasons, namely the 360 pad is alot better than the PS3′s, the loading times i’ve experienced on the PS3 are a joke compared to the 360. Oh, and im not so lazy that getting my arse out of a chair every 4 or so hours to change a disc is a problem to me…

The only thing “holding back” gaming this generation is the old technology in both the 360 and PS3 (i.e. RAM, graphics card etc…)

    #28 4 years ago
  29. jdfoster00

@27 Maybe so. And I understand you’re point and agree with you on the hardware point. But 8gb is far too short for a game and for next gen… Well if microsoft keeps the same optical drive as this gen then it will be doomed xD

    #29 4 years ago
  30. Gekidami

You’re a bit soft in the head if you think DVD’s arent limiting. Every multiplat game released to fit on one DVD is effectively limiting the amount of data the game could have to 8GB instead of 50GB.
LA Noire is a perfect example: If Rockstar wasnt willing to pay MS’ licensing fees per disc (which are apparently quite expensive) they would have been forced to leave out their MotionScan data. Just imagine if this game wasnt originally a PS3 exclusive, and was being made multiplat from the ground up to no doubt fit on one DVD. We would have went from THIS back to THIS.

People really need to stop kidding themselves. More space equals more possibilities, its a no-brainer.

    #30 4 years ago
  31. xxJPRACERxx

@20 Ok, it IS a limiting factor but of tiny significance. Also, game length have nothing to do with storage size.

And like #25 said, RAM limitation is the biggest limiting factor on current gen consoles. (all previous gen too btw)

    #31 4 years ago
  32. lexph3re

Now tea that is exactly what I was thinking. This gen is going to end to soon because in the next 3years we will see not only a wiinii but the 360s successor. The devs have finely perfected this gens architecture for games to make quality titles and can start investigating more styles. I don’t want to see games go up to $80 in the next 2 years. There’s just no need, besides they’ve found clever ways of making quality titles for 360 and ps3 with dual disc.

Like how konami did with castlevania los installing the first disc to the 360 hdd and delivering an identical experience on both consoles without swapping disc. The devs should make ps3 lead console the rest of this gen to deliver more powerful games in equal quality.

I wonder if l.a noir implemented the install first 2 disc to hdd so you only need disc 3

    #32 4 years ago
  33. Bloodyghost

@30, its limiting but its not that big of a not a big factor or need. Its not like we need this to change, just tell gamers to get fit by getting off there ass.

RAM is WAY bigger of a problem then disc limitations.

RAM alone is a big reason why the big contribution to why there will never be a real MMO on consoles.

RAM is also a big problem that is seen in most games when you see popins in game. Those popins are part engine, but mostly RAM faults.

The PS3 would be significantly better if the RAM was higher. 1GB to 2GB is the low standard today.

The PS3 and Xbox dont have even 1GB.

    #33 4 years ago
  34. monkeygourmet

This is one of the first games this generation that seems to have actually used the space on the disc rather than just fill it with HD video footage.

It really annoys me when devs like Capcom say things like the space is holding them back in games like Lost Planet 2 for example… Why don’t they worry about fixing some of the broken gameplay mechanics rather than making the game bigger…

Sony’s main reason to put Bluray in the PS3 was to get Bluray players in home’s, end of story. Same with DVD and the PS2.

    #34 4 years ago
  35. monkeygourmet

Exactly what i was getting at

    #35 4 years ago
  36. theevilaires

RAM will always be an issue because devs will always want to put more shit on a screen to make the game seem more realistic. you think Rockstar doesn’t want more people overflowing in GTA streets while you play the game or give them smarter A.I.

You can put 4GB of ram in the next gen consoles and some devs will cry for 8GB. Crytek already wants at least 8GB next gen. 4 will be plenty. Next Gen M$ will have Blu-ray….but M$ will never beat SONY’s 1st party software and thats where they will ultimately always lose to SONY.

Killzone 3 used 43gb of data, so please stop speculating before coming out with crap like “i think there is none at least no game has use all the blue ray capacity till this day”.

I’m pretty sure UC3 will use near the same maybe more data.

Xbox’s dvd format limits the amount of textures and models in a game, but its just a shame that they both have a poor amount of Ram, I mean the most basic gaming machine in 2005 had atlest 1gb of RAM ffs. If you have played KZ3 and the many who have will agree with me, it is probably the best looking PS3 game to date, its got Smooth textures and good AA, which make xbox games look jaggy and horrid imo.

    #38 4 years ago
  39. theevilaires

@33 Who are you giving a lesson to in console specs boy?! I know the 360 and PS3 hardware specs like the back of my hand. You forget that ram was not so cheap 4 to 5 years ago to put 1-2GB in a machine. The PS3 would have cost probably an extra $50-100 bucks on top of its already asking price of $600.

Although some members here have claimed they brought a PS3 at launch for “$700″ and “their 2 cents” ;)

@39 I do not what your ranting on at the end but I know the RAM costed alot, I never INTENDED on the PS3 or Xbox having more Ram.

But right now, a new generation is needed because the limitations via RAM and graphical limitations.

@36 If you were a developer you would think differently. Ram limitations really set boundaries on what you can display. This is why its not safe for 64 players running on the Frostbite engine 2 with phyics involved and various sets of animations, sounds and things flying around at a limited 30 FPS.

Also you never know TEA, MS might step up its game since Sony is trying to keep its huge first party while buying out the best content and version from big multiplatform games like Batman Arkham City and Portal 2.

    Time will tell.

But if we can agree on anything, it has to be that the build quality and security of both consoles and there respected networks need to be better next gen.

@44 you shouldnt want that, its a good thing that we can talk about games with minimal hate, trolling and flaming.

  47. IL DUCE

@8 First of all they just said its pushing the 25 gig blu ray disc limit so obviously not all devs use the 50 gig one idiot
@7 it was only 1 gig idiot obviously it wouldn’t do much I think it was because the security features take up 1 gig on their own so they were trying to do something that they could easily do just increasing disc space by a little bit since every gig counts…

But yeah the next x box will have blu ray or the x box equivalent and people were saying sony was stupid because it did seem stupid at first, kinda like hd dvd didn’t make it…kind of like a good amount of casual non-tech people though the iPad was retarded and now its taking over the earth so a lot of people say things are stupid when they first come out because people don’t think they will work or vastly improve their experience or life but later realize either they were wrong or right depending on the success of the product hell people probably thought cd players and vcrs were stupid at first too

And finally unless you’re a 90 year old gamer switching discs really isn’t a oppbig deal…especially since its in between cases its not like you’re in the middle of a car chase or something…and I don’t wanna hear anyth|ing about immersion in the game because anything can distract such as a spouse or kids etc. So that’s not a reason to complain about disc swapping…

I only play playstation exclusives on the ps3 so I will be going with the 360 version

    #47 4 years ago
  48. Gekidami

How is it not a “big factor or need” in this case? Not having the extra space would mean Team Bondi would have to say goodbye to one of the main selling points of their game. Same goes for Id with Rage; If they were limited to one disc its bye-bye “Mega textures”. Not all publishers are willing to pay the extra fees per disc, how much content has been forced to get the cut because it pushed the game over that little 8GB limit?

More RAM would be good, but the PS3′s lack of RAM hasnt stopped it from having some of the best looking games released this gen. And what is the required RAM for most MMO’s to run? 512 which they consoles have? The PS3 can also load some of the work to a SPU.
Like i said, more RAM would be good, but its not that much of an issue right now. I’d rather devs use the advantage of more disc space to incorporate stuff like MotionScan, then have more RAM and reduce pop-in.

But you bringing up the RAM just seems like you’re trying to ‘Wag the dog’, anyway, honestly. Its not what this is about, so bringing it up is pointless.
In the end i’m just amused that some of the people that started out saying that DVD’s arent limiting have had to slowly admit that they sort of are (lest they look a bit ignorant). People also said similar things about there being no difference in space between bluray and DVD (because 8GB and 50GB were apparently the same thing). That was also a rather ridiculous claim, just like saying less space to work with isnt limiting is.

    #48 4 years ago
  49. Bloodyghost

@48 DVD cost is very low. id and Team Bondi can make more then 1 DVD for per game.

Also the graphical proweress of a game can be pushed up a notch just by adding RAM, it can help developers who are making games so they do not have to try to add all there content in by side stepping the boundaries of a low RAM.

RAM would allow a game like Uncharted 2 to look a lot better and allow Naughty Dog to further immerse the player with better graphics, shadows and etc while giving NG the room to make more open scripted scenes. Some scenes in U2 that really show off the graphics the PS3 can take are very linear ones.

RAM would allow an FPS game to store more enemies and smart AI per screen, more animations triggered at once and much more.

    It would immensely help.

DVD space is something that you just add a DVD when you hit the cap.

Sure for smaller developers and publishers making a big game, it can be fatal but with the games you see that cross that 1 DVD boundary on the Xbox they are always by a big publisher or a publisher who can allow the production of twice or thrice as many DVDs.

its a problem but its nothing that needs to be rushed as much as graphical limitations and RAM limitations.

    #49 4 years ago
  50. Bloodyghost

Also I do not think that ending part of your explanation and point is needed.

Its like I pointed out your point and ended with “And if you think other wise, your a goddamn dunce.”

Maybe your point or other points about the DVD limitations have opened eyes, shouldnt be against that.

    #50 4 years ago
  51. monkeygourmet

Of course it’s good to have more space, but at this late stage in both these console’s lifecycles it really isn’t an issue.

Final Fantasy 13 (which i still believe was a shit conversion), Lost Planet 2, RAGE and now this are the only games i can really recall were devs have stated more space would be benificial.

Even if the 360 had Bluray, the age of it’s other hardware would still expose it’s limitations…

    #51 4 years ago
  52. xxJPRACERxx

RAM is the biggest limiting factor currently. And it’s not just about pop-ins. It’s about number of objects, size of the world and many other variables that need to be stored in memory that you don’t necessary see on screen.

Programmers are struggling to try to fill the RAM efficiently but they have to make sacrifice. Just look at the latest Motorstorm articles where the devs said the biggest challenge was to try to find a way to store everything they need in memory, same with Crytek.

This gen DVD is able to do the job. Next gen it won’t. But currently the main problem is RAM.

edit: And all of what #49 said.

This doesn’t matter one bit. I see alot of people on the GT jumping on this and dissing the Xbox 360, but they haven’t read the article. It’s no big deal, will only occur twice during the game…again, no big deal.

    #54 4 years ago
  55. Kerplunk

Ah, good old homophobic slurs. What a fine example of a gamer you are Mr #53. Truly.

As for the RAM and storage space argument: ANY developer will happily accept more of anything. Processing cycles, data bandwidth, RAM or storage space. The argument of “filling RAM efficiently” is so ass-backwards it’s a joke. Any muppet can fill up RAM. Your grandma can use up all the RAM on her PC just running her virus scanner!

And 1gb, 2, 4 or 8, 25 or 50. It’ll always end up being the same thing: those last 16 bytes are always the most precious. ;)

@54 People make it a big deal in accordance with their agenda. People make a blurred texture that’s on screen for a 60th of a second into life and death. They claim it’s the end of the world if you spend 7 minutes installing data to your hard drive. They cut their wrists because a battery life only last 6 hours instead of 8. Find a molehill, make it into a mountain so you can climb it and preach your sermon from the top of it.

  57. Bloodyghost

@55 You do make a good point but RAM would really support graphics on a home consoles. It will allow for a game that can use more animations/enemies drawn on screen/draw distances and more.

Sure developers will always complain about something but RAM would highly help a game especially when animations, AI and graphics are getting more sophisticated and need more memory to write.

Nice try but troll harder ;) You guys really think PSN being down affects my ability to sit here and finish Crysis 2 campaign or FFXIII or RDR or how about all the other great exclusives SONY has drop “SO FAR” this year offline. When it comes down to it I rather collect trophies offline any day than get achievements online anytime. I have 2 360′s which have not been turned on days before the PSN going down…..go ahead check my last log-in time for yourself.

Just goes to show you PS3 owners are in a bliss of the good ol’ PS2 days. Enjoying great exclusive titles. We understand LIVE fanatics have to keep playing COD until Activison releases the next COD because M$ can’t produce shit for that system (1st party wise…well except for Kinect trash)….wonder when the next exclusive for 360 is coming out and I hope its not another Halo or Gears (oh right you guys got a GEARS 3 beta to hold you over until fall)

(Cranks Lina Termini back up and proceeds to finish Crysis 2) :)

  69. Phoenixblight

MS going back to the HD DVD would have to make it an add on (over priced one at that)and then MS would have to make it an option because you can’t force the consumer to pay for the mandatory upgrade so the publishers have more space on the disc.
Btw going to HD DVD would not stop pirating not in the slightest, you just have to flash the console to play pirated games.

Hmmm..I may switch my Pre-Buy of this to Blu-Ray. Does anyone one know, is there like a 2 hour install on the PS3 or anything?

Actually, can you install all 3 Disc of the 360 Version and then just play with 1 disc in the Drive?

    #74 4 years ago
  75. Phoenixblight

What game has a 2 hour install that has been released in the last 2 years?

“Actually, can you install all 3 Disc of the 360 Version and then just play with 1 disc in the Drive?”

No you still have to swap no matter what.

    #75 4 years ago
  76. Shonak

It worked in ME2 and any other title perfectly, disc swapping won’t be a problem here either.

    #76 4 years ago
  77. OrbitMonkey

@74 It has a 6 hour install, up to 10 min long loading times, bad textures, the dualshock gives you spina bifida… Oh & Sony give your details to Anonymous… but it is on 1 disc ;)

    #77 4 years ago
  78. viralshag

@75, GT5 was pretty long from what I remember. I don’t think it was pushing two hours but it was one of the longest install times I can remember. I think MGS4 might have been next.

Like 76 said, ME2 was across two disc and that was the most minor of inconveniences at best. Considering the amount of hours I logged before needing to swap discs it really didn’t make any difference to me. It seems to be the same case with LA Noire.

So if that is the case and it doesn’t interrupt my game often then I really don’t see an issue.

  79. ManuOtaku

38 You didnt get my point neither, maybe i didnt explain myself good, what iam trying to say is that, till this day there is no game on the ps3 that did suffer for the 360 translation, i mean all the games that use almost the full capacity of the blue ray disc, (and i still believe that till this day there is not game that uses all the blue ray capacity , maybe they are few games that uses the full capacity of the disc space, but the mayority of the ps3 games dont), like final fantasy XIII that didnt suffer for this, i mean the ps3 iteration came the way it was intended and did run beautifully on the ps3, what square Enix did was put it on the 360 with multidisc game, like the L.A. Noire game that also for what is said till this day, didnt suffer for this also, the ps3 version i mean.

But on the other hand there is a few games that were translated to the ps3 from the xbox that did suffer for the difficulty of the ps3 hardware, this is not secret games like FEAR, Bayonetta, Red dead, were a little bit better on 360, becuase of this, this is not a bad thing like i said all the consoles have their quirks, or inconviniences an that doesnt make one shittier or badder than the other, thats why i did tried to say, iam no bashing neither of the consoles, what iam stating is there is not perfect console, all of them have their inconviniences.
P.S and i will be getting this game on the PS3, because it was the lead paltform, not because of the disc issue

    #79 4 years ago
  80. Noodlemanny

There really just isn’t an issue with multiple discs, the only reason this thread is so big is because all the fanboys are flaring up.
Multiple discs can still have exactly the same amount of of space that one blu-ray does. If the developers can afford multi-disc, then it means shit all whether you get it on 360 or PS3.

    @ Lounds,

    That’s a really good point. I totally agree except for the “9″ part! :P I’m much more of a 7/8 fan. :D

I was planning on getting this on the PS3 anyway as I plan to get Brink for the 360. I’m weird in the way I like to share the love between my consoles. The only thing now putting me off that is PSN, my PS3 just feels hollow and empty without it.
