Report – No hard drive for Project Cafe, has 8GB of Flash Memory
The latest in Project Cafe rumors have the console hitting the market minus a hard drive, and instead supporting 8GB of onboard flash-based memory.

According to Kotaku sources, the lack of hard drive could potentially saddle plans for large downloadable titles, however, the game discs themselves supposedly contain 25GB of available space which means you would not need to copy portions of the game onto the hard drive.
It is also being rumored the console will support SD cards along with the fact it will be running at graphics at 1080p.
Add these new nuggets to the already long list of rumors on the console, plus the strokeable touch-screen controller rumor from this morning, and you have yourself a Nintendo E3 press event that you won’t want to miss.
Thanks, StolenGlory.

Nice information here so the disc use will have 25 gb, what format is this? well we dont going to need to save games on the consoles thats nice, and the other SD support, well i dont mind that it has 8GB flash based memory, i dont mind this at all, is ok in my book SD are cheap even for large capacity.

Your right, but I for one will not miss one bit the possibility to have to buy DLC.

Naw, they’ll just have you enter your friendcode with the disc in after verifing your purchase then the dlc on the disc will be enabled. <.<
Is this thing suppose to sport bluray disc? I could under stand the 8gb of flash. Kinda verified my theory to why some games need the install

Actually that is fantastic. Hard drive for console is a stupid idea to begin with. Yeah, it’s easy to install game on the hard drive but thats it.
Without HDD
less lags and faster loading in multiplayer. The only thing that i’m sceptical is about Nintendo’s store.
If they are going to use cloud store then everything here is perfect.

Thats a thought Erth. If Nintendo rolled out some sort of low fee subscript based cloud gaming for retro titles … that would ease the need for HDD and a store with downloads. However this is Nintendo we are talking about so I doubt they will be onboard with something like streaming games.
but it would be great if they suprised us.

For a company that are so forward-thinking in terms of controllers, they’re far behind when it comes to so many other parts…
Will this be the last Nintendo console?
I don’t get why they don’t release an extremely powerful console with an Xbox Live type subscription service.

Stardog, just my two cents, but I think we could be looking at the last round of consoles from everyone. This up and coming gen could be the last. I think streaming(cloud) and digital downloads could well push the PC into the forefront of gaming.
I just mean that PC could well be the lead platform, while games are streamed via a service like Onlive/Giaka to dedicated consoles. It will prolly make a netbook, cell phone, handheld, modem about all the console your gonna need. If it has broadband, wireless controler/mouse/KB, and and can video out to your TV, your gonna be set.
How long? No idea. But this next gen prolly won’t start in ernest till MS/Sony launch new systems. And thats prolly 2-3years from now. Add to that a 5-8year life cycle, and we could be talking about all that cloud stuff. Or using it.

What is it with Nintendo and storage devices? First sticking to cartridges for decades and now rumors of no hard-drive even now that lack of it in some 360 models is causing lots of troubles.

Anyway, No hard drive is a joke imo.
People want more from their consoles nowadays.
if they have the choice from 3 shiny machines, 1 just plays games while the other 2 are real media centres that can do much more, which will they choose?
Unless Nintendo sells it for crazy cheap, I hav 10 dorra.

Oldergamer iam scared of cloud gaming myself, for once i do like consoles and games on physical media call me an old gamer, not pun intended, but we need at least two things rights in order to this be a reality and a real project, first security: if something did teach us the PSN outage was that there is not security in gaming, theres not network save, therefore how about cloud gaming, what a hacker can do with the games i did pruchase if i do not have them on my disc tray, they can stold them and make believe the system i didnt buy it so i will end up loosing all my games, i dont know now iam more concern about this, more than ever before.
Secondly downloading speeds, well the last time i did dowloaded a game was DC online on PS3 and that thing took almost 2 days and if i recall correctly the game is about 15 gb so that means that a game like uncharted or resistance will take about maybe 5 days, and if i buy six games per month i will spend the moth dowloading rather than playing the games, therefore the speed conections should vastly improve in the years to come.
In the end i hope this isnt the future i hope consoles keep coming and physical disc too, but thats my humble opinion

It must have a really fast drive if it uses 25GB discs with no install. I mean, i dont see why the source apparently says that it wont need to install anything because of the disc size. The PS3 goes up to 50GB, and whilst some games use nearly all the space dont need installs, its in no way a guarantee, which is what the source here seems to be insinuating.

Well, it’s probably based on the same type of discs they made for the Wii as they use their own format. The PS3 is a bit unique in the disc read problem. The next playstation console will use BD no doubt but I bet they would have a much, much faster drive and will be able to do away with installs. Though to be honest, I like the option to install anyway.
