Video: Sony unveils two PS-ready tablets for fall release

Sony has shown designs for two touchscreen devices for release later this year, both of which will have access to “high quality first generation PlayStation titles.”

The tablets, codenamed S1 and S2, are PlayStation Certified and will presumably have access to similar games available for Xperia Play.

S1 is an iPad-type affair, a single screen with a 9.4-inch display. S2 is a clamshell device, designed for “mobile communication and entertainment,” with two 5.5-inch screens and a 1024×480 display.

S2 has been shown playing games using touch controls on the lower screen, as you can see above. A video has been released of the two devices, which shows both machines running Crash Bandicoot.

Both have Wifi, 3G and 4G access. They’ll be running Android 3.

No detail on pricing’s been released as yet.

This news comes from an unveiling event in Japan today. Check the Wall Street Journal for a liveblog.

Interesting designs here, first non-Windows tablets that have actually managed to intrigue me.

I bet Sony was to unveil these devices in E3, but to overshadow it’s PSN outage they showed them sooner…

Although it’ll feature a few services created by SCE, these tablets were not designed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was designed by Sony Electronics & they’ve never showed anything at E3.

That is possibly the sleekest reveal video you’ll ever see. A lot better than the grabbing-the-air NGP one, at least. :)

Colour me interested.

Imho the clamshell design is a pretty smart idea for a tablet…

To be honest. Absolutely nothing special.

the thing is… With that thing behind the tablet is just asks you to go and buy a laptop.

Second one… It’s just a DS Lite RIP OFF.

SONY… Sony… sony…

Love the S2 clamshell gaming setup, certainly better than the S1′s controls around the side of the big screen approach. Hopefully everything is customisable. But I suspect not a patch on the Xperia Play as a PS device.

The biggest question is: But why should I choose it over Apple’s iPad??

@10, No the real question is ‘why should I buy this over the Motorola Xoom, Asus Transformer or the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v’
The iPad 2 will automatically crush all of them, but personally, I’d rather any of them over the iPad 2.

I mean honestly, why is there a need for this? So many stupid peripherals that people will buy up because it’s the ‘latest’ thing to have. Really don’t see why people are going shit crazy over these tablets recently. Plus I would much rather have a portable gaming device like a ds over any gimmick filled tablet with shit like angry birds etc.
