Highlighting made optional in Deus Ex
Eidos Montreal has confirmed that, based on fan feedback, item-highlighting is to be an optional feature in Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

This decision to make the game’s augmented reality features switchoffable is all in the name of immersion, apparently.
See a message from the team explaining what’s going on below.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution releases for PS3, 360 and PC in August. Thanks, RPS.

Are you happy now, folks? Can we move on now?

It definitely sounds like a nice gesture, kinda like hiding away Dragon Age II’s actual gameplay in the higher difficulty echelons
Really, there’s every reason to be skeptical about this. I don’t blame people for being excited or optimistic about it, but to do justice to the old game, in all fairness, is something that would take a monumental achievement today.
Just the feeling of going all over the world, with all the mansions and markets and different facilities is pretty hard to match in itself, with budgets being what they are today.

If enough people looking forward to Deus Ex would prefer to play it that way, it wouldn’t affect anyone’s game that didn’t enable it, it encourages more people to pick up the game…AND, the designers are happy to do it, then it’s a win-win.
There’s a door. ok. do i need to be shown I can use the door, or should I assume I can until I find out otherwise? I far prefer the second approach. There’s a mouse-over esque tooltip that appears anyway on usable objects, where the tech inside the main character realises it’s of interest and provides key details. It’s a toggle. If you want to use it, or not is up to you. Very good.

Quite the headline, that.
EM would have to be truly naive not to make it optional.

I guess they thought it was an essential part of that whole “augmented reality” thing. I got the chance to try out the game and it didn’t bother me at all. But well, now everyone’s happy.

This kind of customization is always a good decision. Making it entirely optional means everyone wins.
It’s nice to hear that they’re listening to feedback. That’s a good sign for the game.

Now it’s up to a complete full third person mode made optional… just kidding. Everytime I hear the title of this game I imagine tons of people naked having sex everywhere claiming their rights to reproduce and have children… a yellowish, oily and humid orgy of rights.
