Crytek would like to see a minimum 8Gb of RAM in next batch of consoles

Saturday, 16th April 2011 15:49 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Crytek’s graphics engineer, Tiago Sousa, has said the firm would like to see at the very least 8Mb of RAM in next-gen consoles, because as it stands now: low console memory is a “crippling factor” from a “visual perspective.”

Speaking in a Making of Crysis 2 feature with Digital Foundry, Sousa said PS3 and Xbox 360′s 512Mb of DDR3 RAM with 256Mb alloted to memory is “way too low.”

“My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side,” he said when describing what he liked and disliked about current console hardware.

“It’s way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective. I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB. My highest praise goes to the amazing work they did for their performance profilers, with Xbox 360 PIX and PS3′s GPAD. The PC industry has a lot to learn from such tools. I think it’s great to see NVIDIA’s NSight trying to raise the bar once again on this area.

“Both platforms also benefit greatly from their vast documentation and support.”

Sousa said Crytek was able to make Crysis 2 work due to both Sony and Microsoft having a range of tools at developer disposal which allows teams to extracting as “much performance as possible from the fixed architecture,” and allowing developers to optimize their code.

Thanks, GamerZines.

I’d imagine they could come out with 32Gb and Erth would still come on to the comments section complaining about shitty sub-HD consoles.

8gb of ram in the next generation? :D ARE YOU SERIOUS?

I have 8GB of Ram (for 3 years) and it’s still not used to this date. The one game that used 6 GB was Metro 2033 at best.

+ next gen is going to be shitty Pc’s as always so no 8GB Ram. 1-2 at best.

Hmmm. 8GB of ram seems about fair enough. As a minimum this would be nice but i guess we’ll have to wait and see.

hope there is plenty though. for next gen i want cross game video chat ;D

Why on earth would a single game need 8GB of RAM? 512MB is far too low so I would say 2GB absolute minimum but hopefully 4GB. I would imagine anything higher would just inflate the cost & come with minimal benefits for the end user . This is all assuming that Sony or MS don’t go with a huge emphasis on multitasking, if they did I’d think 6GB would do.

Crytek is clearly a PC developer, you can’t go with the same approach when working with dedicated consoles.

    @7 suck my balls asshole.

you dont like my opinion then fuckoff.

if your reffering to my example of cross game video chat this was basically a joke, but yeh i do want the next gen systems to have a great set of features so that when i sit down to play it i can do everything.

have a game running, be talking to friends, run a web browser so an and so forth, and this does require a good amount of ram

god you really are an asshole erth

“8gb for 2013 they need more ram.”

Hei i didn’t write this! how is it possible?

In any case 8gb for 2011/2012 console is good, for >=2013 console they need more.

The new gen won’t be coming out 2013. MS and SOny have said multiple times that they are following a 10 year time and MS has just started hiring for the development of the next console it will be at least 4 more years until they announce anything.

  12. 2plus2equals5

@11: the problem is that wii hd is coming, ms and sony could be forced to release their next consoles sooner than later.

It’s the same situation of 3ds and psp2, before the 3ds no one needed the psp2…

    Damn you nintendo…

  13. blackdreamhunk

yup that would mean you would be paying more for you consoles too. More hardware = more more production costs and more expensive consoles too.

Also on the pc 8 g may even go obsolete. One more thing I think the gaming Industry has gone down hill.

I am only buying two games this year guild wars 2 and mass effect. I am no longer going to be buying up grades for my pc. I don’t need too, I am going to spend my money else where and finding a new hobby.

There will be no releasing of anything early unless they want to just put a piece of plastic with some wires inside. It takes at least 4-5 years for the companies to come up with their console and R&D it. Nintendo will come out with whatever they want but at the moment 3rd Party developers are not even looking at Nintendo. Nintendo will not make a system that goes beyond the price of the 360 or Ps3. They would be doing more damage to them self than helping.

He’s right, but here’s a better idea – stop being money-greedy whores and focus on PC-exclusive games which are beyond what the current consoles can handle.

If more developers did this, the market for PC gaming would grow.

  18. Phoenixblight

They probably would but devs and publishers are so scared of Piracy that its much easier to whine about what current consoles can handle.

Consoles outsell PC games 10:1 so you can go PC exclusive but really you won’t be making much money as you would going with the console.

after the release of their consoles companies immediately work on successors, so it’s not impossible to ms and sony to release their next consoles in 2012/13

    #19 4 years ago
  20. Phoenixblight

No they didn’t as I said MS just barely started hiring why would they just started hiring if they started making the 360 successor back in 2005. Think for a moment there. 360 cost MS hundred of millions of dollars to develop and they are still taking a loss per unit sold. Both MS and Sony have said 10 years and thats what we will get. Plus whatever Nintendo is coming out won’t out shine the next gen it simply won’t it hasn’t been Nintendo thing since Gamecube.

  21. 2plus2equals5

I really hope that this gen lasts for a long time, but i doubt it will achieve the 10 years goal :(
hiring new developers for the new console development doesn’t mean that they haven’t already started r&d for the new console.

    #21 4 years ago
  22. Hunam

@20 The 360 wasn’t that expensive to make at all. The PS3 was, but the 360 used off the shelf components to make. They also stopped making a loss on each console a few years ago and the whole business unit is making a tidy profit these days.

  23. Phoenixblight

I was going off of 2 year old data not going into the newer model so you could be right.

“hiring new developers for the new console development doesn’t mean that they haven’t already started r&d for the new console.”

Not hiring developers but actual engineers which is needed for the R&D. If they were developing a system someone would have found out about it one way or another look at Nintendo some unknown source leaked it to Game informer, it wasn’t through official channels.

next gen consoles will use Hybrid CPU’s so they can make them smaller, don’t see why you’d need more than 4gb, but hey maybe we haven’t see true 1080p high rez textures because Consoles slow down the potential of PC games, hopefully BF3 will prove this right

    8 Megabit?
i know, 1MB RAM would make for some proper lulz, but 8_G_B would still be better

I honestly don’t see what’s so insane about 8gb of ram. NOT that I can foresee consoles having that anytime soon, but I sure wouldn’t mind having 8gb to run something like the new unreal demo Samaritan.

More Ram = Better graphics, better AI, better functionality.

Many of you are retarded thinking new xbox and playstation won’t be released within two years. They said 10 year cycle specifically for xbox 360 and ps3 just like ps2 had a 10 year cycle while ps3 came out.
8 gigs do sound about right. Ps2 era was 480p this gen is 720p with very few true 1080p games. Next gen will have to be at least 1080p with ato least 60 fps since many tvs now are sold with 120 and 240hz. For next gen consoles to shine they really need to make that huge step in graphics. 4 to 8 gigs of ram is really a must. Also ram is super cheap these days I don’t see why they won’t have at least 4 gigs in the year to two of relese. Wii 2 with half a gig of Ram is a joke.

I have proof what do you have to support that the consoles will be released in two years?

Microsoft just started to hire for the next system and saying that there will be nothing announced until 2013-2015 and Sony saying they have no plans for the next gen yet. Or going off your speculation based on nothing which is all it is.

    #29 4 years ago
  30. Bloodyghost

@29 if they kept to every word that came out of there mouths then we would be living one fucked up word. OF COURSE they will dismiss speculation and rumors. I remember one of the higher ups in MS talk about when Xbox 360 came out, they then started building and investing into a new console.

The fact Nintendo, NINTENDO!, is running out of the line right now, shows you that the next generation is coming.

The fact that most companies are jumping to the PC to give them the graphics they deserve for there platforms, just like most did back in last generation (remember that Half Life 2 game? Doom 3?) and back before then! and before then with Doom, shows that new Consoles are coming around the corner.

The only problem I see with 8Gb of Ram is the fact that its a good 80 dollars, added to the awesomesauce GPU and Motherboard which has to be ahead of when other manufactors get hands on it.

Next Platforms will probably be 600 dollars, at least, if they fall suit with 8GB of RAM and a brand new big GPU and motherboard.

I am fine with a price like that, IF I do get the Unreal Engine 3.5 for DX12 on it.

i dont think the consoles will be out in the next 2 years, im kinda hoping there not.
This gen’s bin pretty awesome in terms of games, and its still got some stamina left in it.

i said earlier i think they will probably have only have just been announced in 3 years, or maybe we’ll be seeing some early specs like what were seeing now with the wii2**

    #31 4 years ago
  32. Bloodyghost

@31 if this gen wont move on then its going the games will start declining. The fact that developers, one who dont want generations to move on, want this generation to move on tells a lot.

  33. dtyk

You misunderstood my meaning. It was directed at people going “8GB NO WAY!?!?!?! THATS RIDICULOUS!!”

    #33 4 years ago
  34. Gama_888

@32 But the games of this gen still look and play amazing.
i really dont think we need new consoles anytime soon.

The devs complaining about the weakness of current gen consoles are just graphics whores :P
iv heard a lot of people say they thought Crysis 2 sucked, thats not my opinion btw i have not played it. But it just goes to show that games really are not all about the graphics.

    #34 4 years ago
  35. YoungZer0

Wow, just wow. That takes balls. Really. They didn’t even try to push the boundaries of the PC with Crysis 2 and now dare to complain? What the fuck you complaining about?! The consoles didn’t limit your game from being great; you did! You could’ve delivered the game you wanted by paying more attention to the PC version.

    #35 4 years ago
  36. dtyk

I totally agree. As amazing as Crysis 2 looked, it wasn’t impressive. They could’ve made THE game.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Lounds

but surely 4gb of ram running at lets say in 2 years time 3ghz is surely better than lets say 8gb of ram running at 800mhz?

so quality rather than quantity imo

  38. El_MUERkO

I’d like to see 48gb of VDDR6 shared between the 128 core CPU/GPU single chip of uber.

    #38 4 years ago
  39. HauntaVirus

ya, doesn’t really make sense to have a cell proc and then gimp it by only having 512mb…WTF.

Next gen consoles should really have 12gb of ram and 2-3gb vram. This is 4-5 years down the road so they will need it.

    #39 4 years ago
  40. jeremycafe

I enjoyed every minute of crysis 2. While playing in 3D might have had a major factor of that, it was still a good game that didnt end after 4 hours like every other FPS out there.
