Anno 2070 debut trailer gets divisive

Ubisoft has taken a holiday from live action motion control trailers to send over one with core appeal: PC-exclusive city building sim Anno 2070.

Announced last week, Anno 2070 is a collaboration between Anno series developer Related Designs and Blue Byte, the team behind The Settlers.

It’s the first game in the series to take place in the future, as opposed to the MIddle Ages, and focuses on two major developmental paths.

Due in the fourth quarter, Anno 2070 combines real time strategy with city building simulation, and as you’ll see, is quite pretty.

Thanks, Erthazus.

Looks very very good.

the thing that is great about it that you can choose ecological technology or standard industrial environment. This is something new in Sci-Fi setting.

Mhm, i really like the idea of choosing between ecological and industrial. The voiceover is bad.

Deal with today’s global challenges? Christ, could you sound any lamer?

It looks like Anno, which is definitely a good thing, but it also looks very black and white. I don’t like preachy games and movies, they usually end up extremely shallow.

@6 Don’t put me on the spot like that :P

Really, there are a lot of “edugames” out there that take subjects like the environment and massacre it for the sake of looking like the holiest of holies. Most morality-based games are pretty preachy.

I just don’t like developers distilling things into that sort of blind and fairly cheap either/or mentality.

A lot of citybuilders do a fine job, but this seems a bit more focused on making a distinction on the environment.

The truth is, society doesn’t allow changes to production while going green, and that’s the real challenge. A country like China is struggling to put money in peoples pockets, and convert a gargantuan population of essentially uneducated sweatshopworkers into a middleclass. There’s no way they can advance that, without going through what we did back in the 1800′s with suffocating smokestacks, toxic rivers, and reckless dumping.

I was thinking about Avatar watching that thing. That movie should’ve been nothing more than a 3 minute public service announcement.

@7: I think the game won’t be preachy, i don’t think it will judge you if you go full industrial. I’m actually excited, been a long time since i played an ANNO Game.

“There’s no way they can advance that, without going through what we did back in the 1800′s with suffocating smokestacks, toxic rivers, and reckless dumping.” Don’t worry, they already do that. Especially the last part.

Just like we did a century ago :P

Or stick to doing in India, or whereever people aren’t looking.

I hope it won’t be preachy. I would’ve liked more factions to kinda change it up though. This looks a lot like “Fairyland” versus “Hellworld”.

@9: Well, that’s realistic, isn’t it?

@10 Touché :D

With the slight caveat that Mr Wong now has a television, and maybe even a bachelor degree. His grandfather never had a shot at that before the smokestacks went up.

It’s all about nuance.
