SOCOM 4 reviews round-up: Scores range from high to low

Reviews for SOCOM: Special Forces are going live as we speak. Find out below what folks think of the game, also known as SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs in the US.

Most scores, so far, seem to be rather good for it, with folks generally giving it points in the 7s and 8s. The lowest score we have found is from Destructoid which game the game a 3 out of 10. Ouch.

More scores will be released throughout the day, and we will update this post accordingly.

SOCOM 4 hits the US on April 19. SOCOM: Special Forces launches in mainland Europe on April 20, Australia and New Zealand on April 21 and in the UK on April 22, and features Move support.

Crappy or mediocre tactical shooter (or not so tactical)

I’m still getting it with the price drop. Not much of a tactical shooters out there, i need a bit of a fix there. But Sony again shows that no matter how much software they have, they have a lot of shitty games.

Quantity is not quality.

I could swear that I said how games would be medicore in every way and how game have is ”noticed” only because it have SOCOM name and it is PS3 exlusive. http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/11/socom-4-trailer-shows-off-solo-campaign/#comments
IF game was gone multiplatform PS fanboys would go saying how they ruined the franchise and how game is no more SOCOM…

i didnt like the beta at all. Thought it was so crap and it seems by the reviews that i am not the only one who thought so.

I tried the beta last night and for love nor money I just couldnt get my head around the controls.
Especially the movement one.
I was either looking up in to the sky or at my feet.

I know everyone else was using the same set up so its not a fair complaint really but it did put me off playing it.

I will probably try again and see can I tweak them but all the options I was given didnt seem to make much difference.

Anyone else who tried it feel the same way?

The most hillarious thing that with SOCOM 4 FLOP, Xbox 360 owners soon going to enjoy Gears Of War 3 beta that is going to RAPE this game in to the pieces.

It’s like a double penetration.
Zipper Interactive is trash and a really big mistake by Sony when they tried to acquire them. They can’t do nothing special or something playable. Just a bunch of ideas that does not work at all.

I think soon Zipper Interactive will get the same treatment like SOE.

@3 completely agree. Beta was crap. I don’t know what people see in this game. U2′s multiplayer is much better 3rd person shooter imo.

@8 warhawk is the best 3rd person shooter on ps3 imo, i still play it sometimes. i wish a game like that was on xbox live.

Erth that is an opinion your entitled to but there are plenty of others who don’t agree with the reviews or you. I won’t buy this game but I won’t say it was utter shit. It was actually very fun when I was winning and losing. The boards are very well balanced and designed with no major glitches I notice like falling through the board.

I honestly think everyone who think this game is crap either A. It wasn’t their type of game B. Sucks a lot and sat watching while others owned them C. Needs an excuse to hate on a ps3 exclusive. This game isn’t ruined in its tactical shooter all my friends that are pro TS loves the beta. My fps friends hate it, its just personal preference. The game is going to sell and have a great install base.

If sony makes it like mag and free to play full version for psn members they would be able to increase the numbers a lot for the game.

I actually enjoyed the multi-player beta and can see me playing this for a while.

Most of the reviews mention how the solo campaign isn’t very memorable.. While that is disappointing SOCOM has never really been about the SP campaign anyway. Still a few reviews mention that the 5 player co-op is decent and worth playing.

Not to mention that Zipper are well known for their support for their games released so I expect SOCOM to really be patched after release to iron out some of the issues the reviews mentioned (such as poorly implemented interactions with environment/other players).

I will still pick this up though based on my experience with the MP beta.

@11 “I honestly think everyone who think this game is crap either A. It wasn’t their type of game B. Sucks a lot and sat watching while others owned them C. Needs an excuse to hate on a ps3 exclusive.” – Exactly.

@2 most SOCOM “veterans” are saying that its no longer SOCOM anyway.

It’s looked so… so… erm… Forgive me for my french… ‘MEH’, since being announced.

These scores are par for the course.

Silly Zipper, you had a good thing going with MAG. Why go back to the well so soon?

SOCOM games have always been a bit marmite in terms of review scores (Metacritic range for the series is around 70-80). They have sold very well though over the iterations, so someone is enjoying them.

I really enjoyed the beta and will be getting the full game, anything SP campaign wise was always going to be a side salad to the main events of MP and co-op for me.

@reask
Move deadzones are configurable by view (default, aim mode and down the sights). Have a play with those. I would suggest a small deadzone for default and getting bigger for aim and bigger still for the sights view). Depends how you like to play though.

Never liked SOCOM to be honest. Still i’d never trust an attention whore like Jim Sterling on anything.

@1: Aren’t you the same guy who said Killzone 3 sucks three months before it was released?

@6: Lol, only a moron would compare Gears to SOCOM.

#6 You must be rather stupid to compare a brainless shooter like Gears with Socom.

Socom 4 is far from perfect, but still one of the better tactical shooters around. The franchise has a lot of fans, but it’s probably too boring for the mainstream CoD gamer.

Well, I’m playing a promo version of the game and I really like it. I have reached mission 10 and I dig the story, the characters and the gameplay. There are some problems with AI at times, though it’s rare. And as much as I like “45″, the female operative, the missions with her are a bit linear. But overall, I find it to be a great singleplayer-campaign.

Why does everyone keep calling it a tactical shooter?
they flippin removed all the game modes that needed tactics.

#22 Very true, but at least there’s still more room for tactics than choosing your perks ;)
