3DS will sell 11.6m in 2011 but won’t outsell DS, predicts research company

Screen Digest has predicted big numbers for Nintendo’s latest handheld, but warns it won’t outsell the other members of the DS family.

Whilst 11.6 million of anything should be considered a lot, a report by Screen Digest highlights that first year DS sales – a culmination of the original DS, DS Lite and DSi – totalled 13.1m.

The report predicted that the 3DS will be outpaced by DS’s historical success throughout the first four years of its life, culminating in a total of 69.9m 3DS units by the end of 2014.

DS had sold 90.9m by the same stage in its lifecycle.

Screen Digest pointed at the plethora of mobile devices now available, such as iPods, smart phones and tablet computers, as the reason 3DS will fail to outsell it’s predecessor, which had racked up worldwide sales of 136 million units by the end of 2010.

Thanks, MCV.

This is the same research group which predicted that the PS3 would easily outsell the wii and 360 this gen back in 2008 right?

LMAO your right, infact they predicted the Wii would be “a distant third”.

Given that, perhaps we should assume the exact opposite of their claim… Whatever that would be.

They say DS sold 136M by end of 2010? wrong Nitnendo said they shipped 144.59M end of year so sell through will be approximately 143.50M. This just proves that this analyst isn’t reliable. Also 3DS will sell a but more than 11.6, when the software comes like the new Mario expect massive sales near Christmas.
