CCP has announced its two week EVE Online charity drive raised over $40,000 for Japan relief funds. A round of applause for our generous spacers, please.
According to the EVE development blog, the scheme collected 2,549 PLEX, or “pilot license extensions”, an in-game, tradable item representative of 30 days subscription and therefore the equivalent in real world currency.
2497 PLEX were donated directly, with another 52 accounted for by 18 massive donations of in-game currency, totalling 19.6 billion Interstellar Kredits.
A single generous player spent 50 billion ISK acquiring PLEX for the initiative.
CCP’s PLEX donation system has been used in the past to provide aid and relief following the Haiti tsunami and Pakistan floods. Since inception in 2004, the charity has received $155,000 in total across all drives.
EVE Online is a dauntingly complicated and remarkably rich persistant-world sci fi MMO, apparently inhabited by incredibly generous players.
