Sony vs Hotz – Hacker shuns PSN account lie claim

Tuesday, 29th March 2011 06:48 GMT By Johnny Cullen

PS3 hacker George “Geohot” Hotz has dismissed claims by Sony that he lied to a court about creating a PSN account.

Who is George Hotz?

Infamous iPhone hacker who earlier this year published PS3′s root key.

Sony is suing Hotz on eight claims, including violation of the DMCA, computer fraud, and copyright infringement.

Hotz is currently in South America.

Hotz on Wikipedia.

Hotz’s representation, as noted in newly-filed documents by Groklow (via Gamasutra), says that none of his four systems are tied to a PSN account that was apparently made under the name “blickmanic.”

Sony claimed that a system bought by Hotz was used to create the blickmanic account at an address not far from his residence, despite the fact that Hotz had steadfastly denied to a court that he was in possession of a PSN account.

If the company were to find a link to the account and Hotz, it would mean that he agreed to the PSN terms of service, meaning a stronger presence in Sony’s case against him.

The account hasn’t been linked to three other used PS3 systems bought and owned by Hotz because their serial numbers haven’t been disclosed yet.

This new twist also included a comment from a neighbour of the hacker, saying he borrowed a console from him.

“See, I live next door to George Hotz and we’ve always been good friends,” he said. “At the time I bought the console, I was waiting to be connected to the internet by my ISP so I asked Hotz if I could use his for a while. Good neighbors, that’s all.”

Hotz has also reiterated claims he wasn’t aware of the existence of involvement with Sony Computer Entertainment America, insisting he believed PS3 was a product of Sony Japan. This has become a sticking point in the case as SCEA has claimed Hotz’s use of the PS3 SDK has created a “relationship” between the hacker and the US PlayStation arm, and used this as reason to gain access to Hotz’s hard drives – Hotz claims the SDK is owned by SCE, the Japanese PlayStation wing.

Hotz is now on spring break – that or getting cosy in a hideout – somewhere in South America. The case continues.

the world has gone to hell don’t you agree?

*Sony sues an hacker for hacking his system, disturbing his own hack code online and disturbing a tutorial video.
*So we are not allowed to hack our systems anymore? we are only renting the f**ing ps3.
*Sony knew they may not win so they had to lie to their customers and to the court about their own story
*idiots, fanboys and sony slaves rightfully believe Sony even though they lied to them and still support the lying greedy corporation.
*They spend millions to fight the court case
*Same lying corporation that was sued countless times in 2007 by many company for their lies, breaches and patent breaches.

    in the end…justice will prevail!

@2, Stop acting like Sony’s the only company in the world to sue the ‘little guy’.

Apple, MS & even Nintendo do it quite frequently.

Research the situation before making blind accusations, the PS3 is yours, you can do whatever you wish to the physical device, but the Operating System & network is owned by Sony.

If GeoHot didn’t needlessly hack the PS3 in the first place, all 4 Linux on PS3 users would be blissful right now, the 2 billion guys addicted to CoD wouldn’t have half their games ruined by hacks, there wouldn’t be as many pirates on the PS3 (other than use using those expensive thumb drives) & GeoHot wouldn’t be fighting Sony in court right now after continuing his ‘work’.

@3 Wait, are you suggesting Sony are NOT a dark evil, bent on world domination & the era#ication of consumer rights? Think I’ll trade in my Ps3 & get a iPad then :(

#3 Yeah but neither microsoft or nintendo create a device that had an application, fully advertised, and a one that will last its entiry lifecycle, and one that was part of the total price of the ps3, only to be tooked it away without any compensation, and only for money reasons, they opted for the easiest solution available, screw the consumers for this. PSN is Sony IP i agree, but this application, one that you loose too if you want to keep other S, alongside with playing new games that require an update, was implemented as a tool in order to get away with this, becuase they state that you agree under the new terms, but the ones that threw away the terms and aggrements that came with the box of the product , when the consumer paid full price for this device, was sony not the consumers, and they did it without compensanting those affected consumers.keep in mind that electronics devices since the dawn of the industrial revolution, always were upgrade to add/or modify a benefit to the consumer, not to dowgrade it like this particular case. this is unaceptable for a big corporation like sony, a device that had green light of approval by all the departments and investors, therefore this application should be tested with a pro and cons list prior lunch, in order to avoid the “money issues” later sony will have to face.

As soon as Microsoft and nintendo do this kind of treatment to the consumer, lying, deceiving multiple times, and stolen from the consumers, believe me i will be the first to step in line again agaisnt them. simple as that, because my stakes are with the consumers, myself included and i keep my word, you can keep this post as a prove.

Lastly what Geo Did was wrong, and mostly foolish because he didnt do it anonymously, but thas the only way he did find to retaliate the wrong actions from sony, so like a bad marriage both sides have the fault for doing wrong actions.

@4, Out of Sony & Apple regarding consumers rights, I think nearly everybody would agree with me that Sony would be the lesser of two evils.

@5 you make some very valid points, but I’m kinda tired of this potrayal of Hotz as some kinda consumer rights freedom fighter. His not, thats the guys taking Sony to court in Norway. Hotz did what he did for the challenge & the glory. Period. He was hacking the ps3 BEFORE the removal of other OS wasn’t he?

#7 i agree with you, thats the reason why i said that what he did was also wrong, but i like to state that what sony did was also wrong.

P.D and also i did want to put the reasons why so many consumers are align with GEO, even if his intentions were bad, this only god and him knows, because they see this as an oportunity to get even with sony, and thats pretty much understandable under the circumstances of this case
