3DS UK launch – Unboxing video, hardware shots and GAME midnight launch in Derry

Nintendo’s finally kicked open the door and unleashed 3DS to the UK and Europe, with the US launch not due for another 48 hours. We bought ours last night from a GAME in Northern Ireland. See it emerge after the break.

There’s a near five-minute unboxing video of the device below.

We also took some photos of a local midnight launch at GAME in Derry, Northern Ireland. It was a bust, to be honest. Only about 14 people showed up before midnight, with two or three more appearing afterwards. One of them was there just to get Crysis 2.

By comparison, the last midnight launch the store did was Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, and that brought in a crowd of somewhere in the region of probably 200-250 people. But we stuck at it and got some pictures.

There’s some hardware and packaging stuff too.

Heh heh – 14 people isn’t quite the midnight scrum you’d expect for a hardware launch. Still, you did better than the only other person on my Twitter timeline who went to a midnight opening – there were only three people at his. :-D

Interesting. I was figuring that the 3DS would do very well in JP(that was pre Quake/Tsnumia), and not so well in the western markets. Time will tell, but 14 seems kind of a slow start.

Not really. The people in Derry will line up in droves for a midnight launch for either a main Grand Theft Auto, Halo or Modern Warfare/Call of Duty – Gears of War at a push, but I haven’t seen a midnight launch for that yet, but I’d assume there will be for Gears 3.

Even still, 14′s a bit desperate. Even if it was an early morning launch, the opening I went to for PS3 launch four years ago this week had a bit more than that, something like 30, maybe 40.
