Nintendo: 3DSWare logo "simply a placeholder," not a thing

Nintendo has told VG247 that the appearance of a 3DSWare logo last night on the Nintendo Greece website is "in no way related" to any services the company has planned for the handheld.

On Wednesday night, an 3DSWare logo appeared on the Nintendo of Greece website. That's since been pulled, with Nintendo insisting it was only a "placeholder."

"Due to a technical issue, the company who distributes Nintendo product in Greece made a temporary logo, entitled '3DSWare,' public on their website," the company told VG247 in a statement this afternoon.

"This logo is in no way related to any unannounced services or features for Nintendo 3DS, and was simply a placeholder used whilst the website underwent construction work and has since been removed.

"We apologise for any confusion the logo may have caused."

A trademark for 3DSWare was registered last May, as discovered in filings before the handheld's official unveil at E3 the following month in LA.

Speculation followed that the company was introduce a new download service similar to DSiWare and WiiWare.

Nintendo is set to launch 3DS in the UK tonight with midnight launches across the UK and Ireland, with the main event happening in London. Keza MacDonald will be in attendance for VG247 at its main launch party, and Lauren Wainwright will be covering the HMV launch on Oxford Street.

The handheld releases in the US on Sunday.
