No subscription needed for Torchlight MMO, says Runic

Wednesday, 23rd March 2011 08:42 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Runic boss Max Schafer has confirmed that the Torchlight MMO won’t require a subscription to play.

Schafer told Charge Shot that having subs for the game would have put it up against WoW.

“I don’t think really anyone can do [subscriptions] any more, because pretty much everyone that does subscriptions has one for WoW,” he said.

The Torchlight MMO was announced back in 2009, but was put on the backburner for development of Torchlight II. Perfect World Co is to publish the game worldwide.

Runic recently launched the original Torchlight for 360, with Torchlight II due sometime this summer.

Thanks, Joystiq.

So what’s their profit model? Relying on people buying shit for their characters for real monies? It can’t be entirely free, and they won’t earn enough from client sales alone to maintain the servers.

I would love to know how these free to play games earn back their money, maybe lots of people go overboard with their micro transactions…

@2 They could bring out expansions every 1 1/2 years like Arenanet did with Guld Wars.

@3, you often have to buy game currency in bulk, so you can’t just buy that spiffy helmet for 50p or the magic sword of pwnage for £1, you buy like 1000 gold for £10, bit like microsoft points.

@4, I considered that actually, I find it a bit risky though, you’re relying on a high percentage of your users buying the new content while still having to pay to run servers for those who don’t.
