Crysis 2 MC average beats both KZ3 and Bulletstorm

Tuesday, 22 March 2011 11:39 GMT By Staff

With the dust settling on Crysis 2′s reviews, the shooter has settled close to 90 percent on Metacritic for every format, giving it a lead over other current triple-A action releases and making it the highest scorer in the genre this year.

The highly anticipated action title, which released yesterday in the US and hits Europe on Friday, now has a Metacritic average of 89 percent for PC; 88 percent on PS3; and 87 percent on 360.

The Xbox 360 version was the most heavily reviewed, with the final score based on 26 verdicts. The PS3 version was reviewed 15 times, while the PC average was based on 12 scores.

The scores put the title ahead of the current crop of high profile shooters, beating Epic’s superb Bulletstorm, which managed 84 percent on all formats; Killzone 3, which took an 84 percent average as a PS3 exclusive; and Kaos Studio’s Homefront, which scraped over 70 percent on all formats.

The reviews were published yesterday afternoon in the wake of a monster launch trailer for the game, which you can watch below.

Here’s a full round-up of review scores.

The best looking game on consoles (c) CVG.CO.UK

sup bar 720p, Temporary AA, worst shadows, no filters, crappy textures

    the irony

    THE IRONY!

To be honest, i’m sure i played games on my PS3 that look better on consoles then Crysis 2. I’m just not sure that this game lives up to the hype at least there. I can’t judge the game yet, but after playing absolutely horrible (for a console standard) demo, it’s just… meh…

But Pc version looks OK to be honest. Dumbed down console port, but what can you expect anyway…

Interested to see how the single-player fares. The multiplayer demo didn’t really do anything for me.

Do you just copy and paste this stuff every time or do you think “sup bar” and “Temporary AA” are actual phrases?

  9. Erthazus

@7 when i played the PC leaked version i think singleplayer is going to be solid.

Multiplayer was a bit Call Of Duty with nano suit which is a dissapointment, but what can you expect? It’s a game for console audience. Call Of duty is the king of multiplayer game (sales) on consoles.

@8, “Do you just copy and paste this stuff ”

    No.

anti aliasing and high res textures don’t make a game good. This looks fun to play, shame I missed out on the Beta, but it will be the single player that makes me buy a copy. Got my eye on this one!

I am loving it. I picked it up a midnight at Walmart for the 360, and they had a ton of them.

I am really enjoying it, the controls are fine, I turned the music off. For a 360 game it looks really great, yes it won’t measure up to PC’s, but it looks great. Lots of detail in the environment, fire sparks blowing in the wind, bugs flying..very active environment. For the 360, this is really a gorgeous game. I guess if your a PC gamer, then you will think it is ugly, but if your like me, who can only afford to console game, then this is a really good looking 360 game. A Good bar for other games to be set to.

The Environment is HIGHLY interactive, you can pick up and throw about everything.

I am just at the beginning, so I have nothing about story line, I did get irritated at the music and turned it off, but I just really don’t like Music in FPS’s. Too many times the music is a dead give away with what is about to happen, and turning it off makes FPS’s much more interesting and startling.

No regret buying it at all as of yet.

@18 Aside from Crytek’s confirmation that the demo was an older build there are recordings of the leaked retail version all over youtube.
SP campaign and MP maps, they’re nowhere near the demo.much better textures and performance

@20 actually between consoles neither is the definite version.each has it’s own stregths and weaknesses than the other.
360 has slightly better native analysis, slightly smoother textures up close(more detailed)less fps drops
ps3 has slightly better lightning effects (few of them missing on the 360),slightly better draw distance(translates to smoother textures at distance, more detailed and less pop ins)

i wonder why Crytek are making Kingdom exclusive for xbot. Because I’m sure it will take advantage of the 360′s power with cryengine 3.

Why do FPS launch trailers always have to use such shite music?

    #28 4 years ago
  29. YoungZer0

This could have been a great ad. But it was ruined by lack of taste. They could have used a song from the soundtrack. Set the tone for the game.

But this. This ruined it all. We saw the same shit being done with the MW2 and Black Ops Ads. Before that, there was not a single indicator of why Hip-Hop would fit into it.

How does Hip-Hop fit into rescuing human kind in a State-Of-The-Art Suit?

All this song says is: Stuff blows up.

Say what you want about Gears of War, but they know how to sell their games through their ads.

    @28, Would you rather country?

    #30 4 years ago

@30 The only obvious reason they used this song is for the New York theme and kind of ironicaly contradicts with the game.

  36. Erthazus

I’m playing it right now. Enjoying so far, but visuals are not so great compared to the first game. Everything is on max with the latest settings and of course direct X 11 tesselation and fog. Everything is running at 51-60 fps. I’m playing without 3D for now.

Everything else is like Crysis 1. This time it’s more variety, same interaction. Better story (at last for F sake.), AI is awesome. Level design is a bit shitty this time. Running and gunning from enemies is just too easy.

But also there are things that i don’t like. For example they completely destroyed sandbox levels. It’s a shame really, but thats because of console ram. You can’t make it on consoles because of shitty draw distance, but i can deal with it.
Aliens are more interactive this time. Too much freakin blur effect to be honest for no reason at all.

But i like it. Enjoying singleplayer so far, but i’m not so sure if i will enjoy the multiplayer.

85 on metacritic. Holy damn… Crytek will be so dissapointed with this one when their original trollish statement was: Everything that is below 90% on meta is OK…

But for PC version there are only two reviews :D haha.

    #55 4 years ago
  56. lexph3re

Soo with the ps3 version scoring a meta critic of 86 and 360 85. are we still claiming kz3 is utter shit for scoring 84?

    #56 4 years ago
  57. Dralen

The user scores on meta-critic have all been very positive, apart from the trolls that just put a big fat zero just to be fucking assholes.

    #57 4 years ago
  58. Erthazus

@56, they both utter shit. (trolling)

One with good campaign and good visuals (sup bar resolution and port) and shitty multiplayer, other is with ok visuals (but 720p with post processing effects), with shitty campaign and good multiplayer component.

The only FPS winner is PORTAL 2 Only. So we can all shut up.

Little early to judge the metacritic average yet as they’re unbalanced and still coming in.

I don’t see it making it to a 9 or up unless it pulls some miracle 10′s. I’m pretty sure destructoid is going to hit this with below 8. All I know is I’m getting this and kz3 because I’m not interested in all the other fps’s

@58: Can’t wait to see you write something negative when Portal 2 comes out.

Anyway, i’m surprised to hear that the campaign lasts for 12 hours. Might get it after all. But not for the full price of course.

  64. DSB

Yeah, 90 seems a stretch, but there are still quite a lot of comers that haven’t made an appearance on Metacritic just yet. I don’t really mind making Crytek eat some humble-pie, after acting like arrogant cunts for the better part of a year. Plan better.

I’m pretty worried that a lot of those reviews claim that it’s the same gameplay, personally. Crytek promised more action, instead of just sneaky headshotting. If they really haven’t done anything to change that, then they simply have no idea why people liked their games to begin with.

Either way, I put down the dough for the multiplayer, and that’s getting some good mentions, so hopefully it won’t be a total disappointment.

Metacritic is unimportant anyway, at least for me it is. It’s good to see this game getting good ratings, but i was getting it anyway. Loved the MP demo and can’t wait to begin with the campaign.

Games like Halo and such are getting top ratings on Metacritic, but at the end of the day i never was a big fan of the Halo games anyway. 85 is fine.

And that Lens of truth site is horrible, ridiculous loading times, errors, etc. The PS3 version DOES look better in several shots, especially textures looking more crisp on PS3. But it won’t matter for me, all my friends are getting it for their 360 for the online, so am i.

They’ll be disappointed with that though. They spent a lot of time talking about it being a 90+ game, so to just miss out by a few points will be quite frustrating for them, unless some of the magazines like Edge / Games TM bump the score up for them.

I reckon it’ll take something quite revolutionary in the FPS space for reviewers to start dishing out 90′s again, I certainly get the feel that many of them have become incredibly jaded by the genre. A shame then that Bulletstorm (a game which did mix things up spectacularly well) didn’t get the recognition it deserved, either critically or at retail.

I am still throughly loving this game on my 360! Bulletstorm is an Ugly game, but Wow, Crysis 2 puts BulletStorm to shame, and I love Bulletstorm. Killzone 3 is not as in-depth as Crysis 2.

I LOVE all the little details in the game. I know it probably doesn’t matter to others, as I am sure most people love to just Run and Gun through FPS’s, but I take the time to look at EVERYTHING!

The birds that are flying overhead, they can be shot out of the sky. The telescopes for tourists at the docks can be looked through to look at the damage on the Statue of liberty. The Decon Showers work and leave little splatters on your face. The Environment, is just Buzzing with all kinds of things. Leaves are floating buy, papers are twisting and blowing in the wind. Character models are quite nice, though some of them die and lay frozen on the ground in weird ways, but quick kicks or running them over with a vehicle takes care of that! Shadows from tree’s are nicely done. You can drink out of water fountains. And you can pick up almost everything, as said. I had 2 guards coming towards me, and I threw a water bottle over there heads and behind them, and they turned and went towards the sound, that was nice!

This really is a game that should be used as a base for any next FPS shooter. It is absolutely gorgeous and makes shooters like Halo and especially BulletStorm look very, very ugly.

The AI so far as been very smart. Even when cloaked, if you run in with them facing you they hear you and start shooting wildly to try and find you. There Grenades have deadly accuracy. I’ve only run across a few Soliders that didn’t hide appropriately.

I really don’t understand why other FPS can’t look as good as Crysis 2. They really need to use C2 as a measuring bar for other games.

    Color me impressed!

    Who changed the title??

Everyone who knows MetaCritic knows that scores almost always decline after the first day until all the reviews have been added.

I’m sure people have their own opinion on why, but initial reviews are usually always much higher than later ones.

This game will probably go down by at least 5 points on all formats.

    At least.

    #82 4 years ago
  83. theevilaires

LMAO what a joke the game is a bust and I will post my mini review soon. Its not good let me say that and I don’t mean technical issues as the game ran smooth on PS3 with no hiccups but the overall game is just mediocre at best.

    #83 4 years ago
  84. xino

    no surprise there.

When an overhyped title which pushes the boundaries of 3D and Move.
Another game beat the overhyped titled by bringing new innovative feature to how we play FPS making that overhyped title mediocre and generic.

And now a game that doesn’t need to be overhyped like Killzone 3, and doesn’t need to use a useless gimmicky feature Bulletstorm, raises above the two.

    No surprise there.

Crysis 2 offers best graphics over Killzone 3 because Killzone 3 is nothing but overhype!
Crysis 2 offers 3 ways of playing FPS meaning it’s dymanic unlike Bulletstorm that uses an over developed gimmickly feature Kill with Skills.

Killzone 3- is nothing but a generic mediocre over hype title that offers no new gameplay feature in FPSes!
Bulletstorm- nice beautiful graphics, better weapons than Killzone 3, but MANY gamers dislike Kill With Skills. Seriously many of us think once we kill an enemy, he’s dead! We don’t need to keep shooting the dead:/

Crysis 2- 3 dynamic ways of playing FPSes! Excels in graphics, the best graphics on console. NO DOUBT BECAUSE Obviously Cryengine is the best engine to date.

No surprise there mate, this shouldn’t be news because it is obvious. Though it needed to be news to make fanboys STFU!

Now incoming comments from fanboys ready to defend their beloved title.

  85. Crysis

Wow, over 80 posts, I’m assuming a majority of these comments are arguments & without going trough a single one I can assume that somebody like Erthazus stirred most of it or some child comparing it with Killzone 3.

  86. Iliad

After the disappointment of Killzone 3 (32-players down to 24/16, dependant on mode, and very small CoD size team deathmatch maps) I’m hoping Crysis 2 will do the job – reviews are pretty much what I expected. I don’t anticipate a mind-blowing experience (demo was fun), but one that keeps me entertained until Battlefield 3 will do the job.

@83 Cryengine is probably the best engine in a retail release to date (I do prefer it to KZ3, which visually is still impressive), but going on what we’ve seen on DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine for BF3 that’ll be put them all to shame. And will be the best FPS in 2011 bar none. Just saying.

    #86 4 years ago
  87. xino

    @85
Battefield 3s engine or graphics is getting over hyped.
the game is still not AS detailed as Crysis 2! The only visually impressive thing about the game are the physic effects, the debris effect.

People should really do a side by side comparison with Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3.

Trust me, I know when fanboys always hype shit up. Obviously BF2 is the most played military multiplayer fps on pc. Since we have more fans of them, those fans are just hyping up the graphics:/

and then you have the media who hype things up just to get hits.

Battlefield gains the upper hand of physic and physic debris.
Crysis 2 gains upper hand over visuals and graphics. Everything in Crysis 2 is very well detailed. This is the same game on PC that pc fanboys cry so much about, to say Cryegine 3 is toppled up by Frostbite 2 is preposterous!

See it to believe or…simple opinion talk!
Just like people talk shit about 3DS 3D, all opinion talk, you need to see it to believe it.

  89. Deacon

People will continue to hate on Camarillo and the potential shortcomings of Crysis 2…

The bottom line is that while it doesn’t appear to add anything revolutionary to the FPS genre (does anyone anymore?), we should all give props to Crytek for delivering what appears to be a pretty solid and consistent multiplatform title.

No talk of DLC yet (unless I’ve missed it), and other than the PS3 demo fiasco, it seems like we’re all going to get a nicely finished product as opposed to some bug-laden glitch-fest. Other developers would do good to take a leaf.

It looks like a hell of a lot of fun. And I’m very much looking forward to creeping and stabbing my way through the SP campaign.

  91. Iliad

@86 Are they getting any less hyped than what Crysis 2′s graphics did when that was announced and early trailers appeared? Difference is, it’s mainly the media hyping BF3′s graphics (at a time when they’ve all seen Crysis 2), whereas Crytek did, and continued to do most of the hyping themselves.

Still, a lot is personal preference, and I did say at retail release Crysis 2 is probably the best, as I’m aware there’s still another 6 months or so before BF3 comes out – plenty of room for further tweaks and improvement.

Plus, we’ve only seen two short videos on BF3, but the potential for industry-leading graphics are certainly there. Maybe it’s a bold statement to say that BF3 will be better, I’ll give you that, but it’s certainly not preposterous.

Also, in a sci-fi FPS with lots of bright colours it’s easy give the illusion of something looking better, whereas a more, dare I see real world colour palette like in BF3 isn’t so bright and in your face about it.

I’d like to think that when the C2 v BF3 comparison takes place – which could only be when BF3 is actually released – that the latter would surpass it. But we’ll see.

Either way, the both look amazing… in a genre where other franchises look 5 years out of date!

@90 A videogame is also an illusion, so wouldn’t that make it pretty irrelevant what tricks people pull, to make their stuff look good? It’s still gonna be prettier to us.

Really, DICE are obviously hyping their engine. The press just reports what they show and tell. And I think there is reason to be a little apprehensive, when everybody starts going GOTY based on graphics alone. That’s not to say that it isn’t looking stellar, though – We just haven’t seen a lot of gameplay.

Personally I don’t see why I should care how one game measures up to another, that’s just playground posturing. Whether either one succeeds is going to come down to what they bring to the table. Do they look good on their own? Do they play good on their own? What’s the experience like?
