MS and Sony took two very different approaches to this generation in terms of exclusives. Sony ramped up it’s internal studios considerably and bought smaller devs to bolster this. MS bought in specific titles as exclusives from established devs. Short term that gave MS the lead it needed and one it’s not yet lost. Longer term Sony’s approach is finally paying off.

Both valid approaches and in terms of it’s market position at the end of the last generation the MS approach was more canny.

Which goes both ways. Some multiplat games are Sony exlusive in JP or timed Sony exclusive in JP before coming to the west on both platforms. You may reply that it’s regionalisation issues, but it’s as easy to apply tinfoil hat theory to this situation as it is to timed exclusivity. There’s no proof in either situation that money was exchanged for exclusivity.

For a platform so notoriously difficult to develop for, and with so many devs saying that they have to devote extra resource to getting PS3 versions of games up to parity with 360 versions, do you not think it’s possible that PS3 releases are as likely to be due to dev/QA delays as they are to some cloak and dagger deal?

Which also happens on the PS3. We also frequently get exlusive content on the PS3 for multiplat titles from launch, such as the Joker for Batman:AA, and the challenge rooms for Bioshock PS3.

@107 Short term Xbox got ‘the lead’ meaning more popular only because it was out before the PS3, everyone had it. if the PS3 was out first on the other hand and with the $$$$ that micro$oft has then it would be completely the other way round and the Xbox would be unpopular because after all its inferior to the PS3. the Xbox coming out first is the only reason why its at the stage its at now, otherwise not as many people would be playing it they would be on the ps3 almost definetly. plus the games would be made for the PS3 and ported and scaled down for xbox, simple as.

@113 thats what im saying the PS3 isnt as dificult to make games for as the devs make out, theyre staying on the M$ side and not pee-ing them off because thats were theyre safe and were the money is. you now that COD made a big statement about the PS3 being so hard to code for and did a bad port because that was what M$ wanted and you no it was part of their little deal to get people to think the Xbox 360 is so good when really it isn’t or M$ wouldnt need to do all this.

I never said I hate MS or the XB360. I never said that PS3 ftw. You can imagine that if you like.

I own/enjoy both systems.

PS2 didn’t crush the Dreamcast in NA. Sega sold over 5million of them in NA, extremly good numbers for the day and age. Segas managment in Japan failed to understand that you could be viable in the world w/o dominating in JP. MS proves this now w/xb360. But fearing that they would lose the race and ultimalty money segas brass shifted to software only and jumped on Sony and Nintendos back.

I also have stated in the past that I felt that this same narrow minded thinking has hurt the PS3 sales today. In that japan delevops with japan in mind only. Over the past few years Japan has been increasingly focused on handhelds. Something that isn’t going to be changing in the near future. Meaning that JP software focus has been shifted away from PS3 somewhat.

In Segas case other JP devs like Sqr, Capcom, Namco, and more focused heavily on Sony hardware for their big name games. Leaving Dreamcast with a few gems from 3rd parties, but mostly with stuff from Sega or from western devs outside of JP.

Again in NA the Dreamcast sold very well, having the then most suscesful hardware launch in video game history(in NA).

AS for the idea that I hate xb360, your wrong. I don’t hate PS3 either. I don’t define my selfvalue and worth with a video game. And I don’t understand why you would feel threatend even if I did? No one is telling you what you can and can’t enjoy.

Corporations work within thier capacities to gain and keep market share, and to equate success in this case to underhanded tactics is ignoring one side of the story.

Don’t worry, I wouldnt. I own both systems, have sampled the best of what they have to offer, and knowing my own tastes and requirements am very comfortable with my choices.
