Capcom: DMC to be “one of the greatest” Dante games

Monday, 7 March 2011 21:36 GMT By Brenna Hillier

A Capcom spokesperson has commented that Ninja Theory’s DMC reboot will be “one of the greatest” Devil May Cry games, and lift the series from an 80-average to a “perfect” 90-average.

“Capcom are heavily involved in the development of all it’s IP being worked upon by outside parties,” the publisher’s European head of marketing said in a post on the game’s official forum.

“When searching for developers to work for Capcom look for companies who skills match up with our own. It’s a perfect marriage of talent and ideas.

“Ninja Theory [is] renowned for the quality of [its] production everything from motion capture, scripting, design and performance, areas perhaps that Capcom [has] been criticised [for] over the past few years? Capcom bring[s] to the table years of experience with design of fighting systems, characters and the little things that make Devil May Cry, well Devil May Cry.

“Combine all the best elements of Capcom and Ninja Theory you will have one of the greatest DMC titles ever created… and that people is what we’re working towards.”

Of the original series, the representative commented “Let’s be honest they were great games (averaging in the low 80′s on metacritic) but not perfect,” citing level design and loading times as flaws.

“We’re now aiming to make the perfect DMC game that gets 90′s.”

After commenting that many fans felt the series “lots its mojo” after Devil May Cry 4, the representative said “the most important thing” was to retain the series’s “core DNA” while retrieving its “fun, excitement and enjoyment”.

The representative responded with frustration to ongoing doubts about Ninja Theory’s capacities, pointing out Blue Castle’s success with Dead Rising 2 and Dimps’s contribution to Street Fighter IV, despite neither studio having a history within those genres.

“Working with a developer is a lot more than looking at their previous games,” he said. “But the skills that they have and what they can bring to the table and how our skills at Capcom can benefit them in our marriage. ”

“We haven’t handed over the family silver to some strangers,” he added later.

“We are working with Ninja Theory on this together. We believe that by going down this route we can breath new life into the franchise and make a game that sits above Devil May Cry 3 for this generation.

“I promise that the game is in very good hands of extremely talented developers both at Capcom and Ninja Theory.”

But even within the thread itself, Capcom seemed a but muddled as to how to deal with the extreme fan reaction, asking fans to both deeply analyse and not read too much into the single trailer seen so far.

“There are a lot of opinions, and people passing off rumours as ‘fact’ on what was a 90 second trailer,” the representative commented, seeming to suggest fans had taken the teaser too seriously, before later adding “We were surprised at the reaction its received, we’d hope that some fans might have gone to more depth to look a bit closer at things in the trailer”.

Thanks, PSU.

The thing and it`s just one thing !
DMC wasn`t from the start depend on its story, it`s 80% about the
gameplay and with a good story, Ninja theory studio failed with two
games they released from gameplay aspect !!

Thats what I worried about the most, and of course the Emo dante :P .

Sorry….but I believe it. Ninja Theory has ALWAYS made underated GRADE A GAMES!

Also that “emo” Dante is more realistic then “Japanese lover” Dante.

    @4

DMC wasn`t to be realistic from the start, was it ?
Dante in the 1,3 and 4 was one of the coolest and funniest and badass videogames heroes ever !!

and for Ninja Theory, again I just speak about the gameplay, I wasn`t
impressive at all about heavenly Sword or Enslaved in gameplay aspect,
and I think they are not suitable for game like DmC, Why ?

well, because Devil May Cry is a fast base action game, and not like
Enslaved or Heavenly Sword which is a slow based action game [ sorry if
    my English wasn`t that good : ) ]

@8: Okay, ever asked yourself if making HS and Enslaved easy was intentional? Every thought about that? They are perfect for the job. If Capcom would’ve chosen, say Epic for the job, that would be a catastrophe. But they choose the right guys for the job. Also i still fail to see how this Dante is emo. Ever played DMC? Dante is a bitch, he was always crying. But he never really had a reason for that. Example: Trish, the woman he met 4 hours earlier dies and he cries like a cunt, talking about being her light? That’s 100% emo. This series is called DEVIL MAY CRY! He has to be at least a little bit emo.

Just because the story of DMC was always stupid as shit doesn’t mean it should stay that way. This is the reason why people stopped caring about the series. Nobody gives a damn about Superman if he’s invincible.

I absolutely believe that this DmC is going to rock. I love the new Dante, love the new art-direction. Ninja Theory has one of the best artists in the industry right now. Not even talking about the story. Also the levels in every NT game so far have been superior to the ugly shit we have seen in Capcom’s DMC titles.

Really, they got lazy. You can definitely see that with the Dante part of DMC 4. Really? I know you love backtracking Capcom, but all the levels?

@9 Ninja theory is a horrible choice (given their track record, HS was decent, hated enslaved, I can think of multiple studios who would be better and now that you mention I would love to see a dmc made by epic more than NT. I was watching interviews on NT on dmc and they fuckin don’t get it. They were saying dmc was about the fashion, music and culture of its time(2001)which is why they went with a more punk look cause theres a punk culture revolution goin on…..somewhere…but regardless i never heard so much bs and ignorance towards what made the series cool in the first place spewed within a few minutes.

Maybe you should go and play the first four hours of the game so you get a better idea of why dante “cried” for only like a few seconds. The story was fairly simple and theres nothing wrong with that, i just dont see amazing intricate story and dante mixing too well. If capcom decides to do most of the work on the combat then there might be some saving grace, but other than that I’m still highly doubtful this dmc will be as awesome as the others. On another note isn’t it a capcom tradition to backtrack?

This is the perfect situation to use the spanish languaged phrase “el chiste del día”. After this DmC, the franchise should return to Japan and start developing Devil May Cry 5 which will be the TRUE next Devil May Cry game. Fuck Ninja Theory, their games suck even if they manage to get great writers and actors… they always end up making shit games.

@15: You obviously meant me. If you would’ve payed attention then you would know that the direction this game took is not only granted by Capcom, but encouraged. They right btw. when DMC came it, it was something new. The music, the clothes, the enemies, the character, totally new. And they never talked about punk revolution, that’s in your head. They also said that the Combat in DMC is what makes DMC DMC. So Ninja Theory “gets it”. Instead of delivering the same game that came before they took the bold step to deliver something completely new.

In an industry where every gamer is crying for something new and innovative, they deliver and there is an even bigger outcry. Why? Because Dante looks like a human being now? Because he’s dirty? Because only the back of his hair is white? Because there might actually be a story for grown ups now?

I get it, Dante cried like a bitch because Trish looks like his mom, so deep!

“My mother risked her life for me, and now you too. (After trying to kill me in the beginning) I should’ve saved you. I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with light!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111 *tears drop on her face*”

    Absolutely fantastic script, right there.

Thinking that Epic would deliver a better game just goes to show that you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

You hate change, i get it, not going to waste my time further.

    #18 4 years ago
  19. madnessHero

@18 he clearly mentions punk culture as influence for the game i just threw the revolution part to be sarcastic http://devilmaycry.org/570/tgs-ninja-theory-interview.html.

Combat wasn’t what I was referring to, I was referring to nt not fucking dante as a character up. If you were a fan of the series, the idea of dante in a mental instiution and having crazy experiments done on him as a teen is bullsh*t, so now according the dmc timeline maybe a year or two before 3 happened(which he was a teen i might add) he was in this crazy mental hospital?? yeah that ain’t ludicrous…oh wait it is.

There are plenty of other ways to bring something completely new to the series without doing what capcom has nt doing. It’s just capcom trying to westernize another game in hopes of increasing sales, which while logical if it’s not pulled off right just pisses the majority of your fan base off.
Don’t even give me that “In an industry” crap, most of the sequels in a succesful series are done in with the fans in mind because without the fans their games wouldn’t be successful. You can’t say that if another iconic series underwent a change just like dmc you wouldn’t hear a similiar outcry. Also enough with that nt is innovative crap, aside from a decent story, and enviroment both heavenly sword and enslaved just ripped off other games as far as mechanics go. Expect the same out of all their games unless capcom decides to most of the mechanic work on dmc.
“Because Dante looks like a human being now?” he always looked like a human being and besides hes half demon so you’d think he’d look slightly different anyway

“Because he’s dirty? ” It’s one of the many reasons, dante never appeared to be a homeless hobo, so why should he now?, unless they do another prequel with a dante as a baby and he shits himself

“Because only the back of his hair is white? ” Again yeah its one of the many reasons fans are pissed. Why would his hair not be white? His hair was white before he awakened his powers in 3.

“Because there might actually be a story for grown ups now?” DMC never needed a story for “adults”, it was never about complex themes and intricate storylines. There was a basic story in each game, and a few touchy moments like when trish “dies” and dante gets pissed because she looks like his mom who was slaughtered in front of him as a kid. Yeah it wasn’t supposed to make a douche like you or any other person cry, that was never the point.

The only reason I think epic would make a more entertaining dmc, is because they make good combat mechanics and dont copy other games like NT does. Plus epic has a sense of humor and isn’t all serious like nt is and dmc (except 2) had dark humorous themes in them. Like I said its all about maintaining the personality of dmc for me. I’ll make my final verdict when the game comes out like a logical person would. I’m just saying from the eyes of a hardcore dmc fan this new dmc doesn’t look promising. Change is good, but not all change, I mean what if monkey from enslaved actually mutated into a monkey?!?!?!?! omg that would be such an improvement…and the funny thing is….it probably would be. If you don’t wanna waste your time, dont write stuff unless your willing to accept other peoples viewpoints

@18 Prepare to swallow your words when “DmC” comes out. You have absolutely not idea about what you’re talking about. You should go and play the three games (yes, including DMC2) first.

I’ve never really understood the emo comparisons to the new Dante. I think this is pop culture confusion in a sense. Here is a clearly punk inspired character, and ppl sort of jumped to the idea of ‘emo’.

I think some have confused punk with emo because there are some elements of punk which the whole emo style has co-opted ( i.e. the hair style)…however emo is emo because it is laden with this bubble gum emotional subtext ( i.e. drippy, romantic crap geared for angsty high schoolers who need to feel all dramatic…I mean have you heard how some of these bands sound like? UGH).. Whereas I think the punk movement came from a place of genuine frustration and need to rebel…I certainly wouldn’t see anything emo-y about that movement. Punk is more about not giving a crap about anything and doing things whichever way you want to.

And honestly there was nothing emo about the DmC trailer. Not the music or the story elements ( well those that we could see…I am so ready to see a new trailer) . The guy clearly had a difficult life, but he wasn’t being all emotional about it. He was shown to be kicking the crap out of demons almost sadistically and having a good time with it. There was just this unpolished violence. Some naysayers can be calling it emo or goth or whatever, but all that NT has done has shown a realistic depiction of someone who is dealing with the early life situations that the original Dante himself went through.

Nero just got a a bit emo with this whole crapping around about Kyrie. It’s not a crime to care about someone in a game, but it seemed so simple and cut and dry, just this romance without really understanding the ‘why these two would naturally be drawn to each other’…it was just ‘so’ and the game was based on that. Kind of like those Raimi Spider-man movies. Nothing ever explained why Peter was so gaga over MJ, or why they worked as a couple, the audience was just expected to accept it. They had nothing in common, they barely really talked, yet here it was this omnipresent yet underdeveloped romance and we were just supposed to buy it.

@19: He said it was not old school Punk, but something new. How do you fuck Dante up? I mean he’s basically a new character every time we play DMC. First he was cool though a little bit too much emo. In the second he was a boring coin thrower. Third he was an annoying adrenaline junkie. Fourth he was okay again. Sorry, but Dantes character persona itself isn’t that good or deep. You can’t fuck it up as much as Capcom did. How do you even know NT is going to fuck it up? Have you played one of their games? Have you seen how deep their characters are compared to any game released by Capcom?

What are you even talking about? Experiments? Where did you get that idea? He was just hanging in a cell, and questions were asked. If you’d done your homework you’d know that they haven’t finished the story around the time when the trailer was out. That story would also be amazing. Would add another extra layer to character and the DMC world. What if the government is hunting people like him? Wouldn’t that be interesting? Where is the government in all DMC games? Why is he the only one fighting?

You’re talking about the fan base as if it was something holy. I’m sorry, but as Nintendo showed off pretty clearly: We’re all expendable. Maybe Capcom doesn’t want to just produce videogames for their “Fans”? Maybe they want to broaden the target audience? Believe it or not, but the majority of people who buy CoD are not fans, they are just swimming with the crowd.

Tomb Raider is getting a new reboot, no outcry there, maybe DMC Fans are just acting like children? Maybe Capcom is smart to depart itself from those fans.

No Dante doesn’t look like a human, he looks like an anime figure.

Of course he’s a hobo. Just ask yourself how Dante can even have an office. He never took any money.

“WHY IS HIS HAIR NOT WHITE?” Excuse me? How about leaving that for the game? We don’t know jack. How about his Hair is about to turn white? How about some development? Ever thought about that? Again just showing that DMC Fans are cry babies. How about giving them a chance? It can’t be worse than DMC 2. I thought that it was obvious that this is a reboot.

“It never needed a good story” Yes it did. Believe it or not, but i’m also a DMC “Fan”, but more than that i’m a fan of pushing videogames further. Just because all of the previous stories sucked and they never bothered to mention certain things in the videogames because jerky comments are more important than making clear that Dante was already fighting his brother in DMC 1 and that Vergil is the Father of Nero. Those things were mentioned in an Interview …

What about the insult? Are you mad at me because i didn’t cry at Trish’s useless death?

Oh man that comment about Epic games just goes to show that you’re really full of it. Good combat mechanics? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! WHAT COMBAT MECHANICS?! Are you mad? Have you even played a game from Epic? What combat mechanics? Are you talking about Infinite Blade? Because that’s the only game they produced that has combat. Otherwise they only produced shooters like Gears and Bulletstorm, you mullet!

It also seems that you never played Enslaved, as it had a lot of humor.

What i meant with wasting my time is the fact that you’d accept anything but the truth about this game. You never change your perspective, not going to look at things differently. If you can do that i’d gladly continue to discuss the whole thing with you. But so far, all you did was complain about every single change NT made.

@20: Four games. There are four DMC titles. Not including Vietiful Joe and Dantes Cameo in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. So, yeah I’m clearly the guy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about. /obvious sarcasm

I can’t think of any other dev that would be able to pick up the reins any better than Ninja Theory.

Except for, well… Platinum Games, but I fear that while they would produce an immensely solid Devil May Cry title, it would be one that would be very much in the same mould as what has gone before.

    Just better executed.

Hooray for a different developer with a different perspective I reckon.

Which devs would you suggest? What games would they have made that would make them suitable do you think?

The only thing that really concerns me from what I’ve seen is the presence of what appeared to be robots in the trailer. No want.

    @29
Team Ninja (as long as they had a decent writer)
Insomniac (very talented company. Resistance and Ratchet & Clank)
Beenox (Wolverine had great combat mechanics. Spiderman had great narrative, humor, and story.)
Radical Entertainment (Prototype had great combat mechanics)
MercurySteam (Castlevania was great all around)
There are more developers that i cant think of right now.

Ninja Theory is great at making a game look pretty but they suck at almost everything else. They had 2 chances so far to make a game that was fun and entertaining but instead they made 2 great looking games with no depth in terms of gameplay.

@31 You’re a fanboy. You think they because your limited opinion thinks their games are poor, that it’s suddenly and fact. You spout off numerous companies that don’t even have experience with this type of game.

Only two of the companies you mentioned have any experience with the stylised action combat genre.

Team Ninja are great, but they’re terrible storytelling and their ideas have been one-trick ponies for years. I have no desire to play Ninja May Cry. I want a new game.

Mercury Storm proved surprisingly competent, but I still believe that Heavenly Sword has better mechanics. Mechanics more in line with the Devil May Cry series.

And the visual style would still be the same. Capcom is directly involved, as they usage said a thousand time. Nothing gets implemented without their say so.

    #32 4 years ago
  33. cerealguy

Get over with Capcom, you will never make another DMC game as good as the first one. I hope this new crap get as bad as DMC2 and receive some awful ratings. Without Kamiya, you will get no 90′s, get him back because NT will just drop shit at this franchise.

    R.I.P Dante.

    #33 4 years ago
  34. Ireland Michael

@33 Impressive. You know the quality of the game before it even comes out. Csn, I borrow your time machine?

This sort of thing is always hilarious. A company rehashed something, they get criticised. They try and change something… they get criticised.

Gamers are the biggest children in the world.

What the fuck is it with all of the sensationalist idiotry in this thread from people who haven’t even seen anything on the game beyond a teaser trailer from nearly half a year ago, but yet are content to shit on it because of some self-righteous hate toward Ninja Theory.

Yes, OK, I get it; you don’t like Ninja Theory but for fuck sake give them a chance at least.

    @32
I’m a fanboy? a fanboy of what? What in my comment would point me out as a fanboy, child. Don’t just yell things out because somebody offended your favorite pogo stick, child. Another part of your comment that shows your age is that you still need to learn to read. Nowhere in any of my 2 comments on this article did i state my opinion as FACT. I’m glad you hold me in such high regards that you automatically assume what i state is FACT. Either way you try to explain it, Ninja Theory games were nothing more than pretty. To me anyways. Obviously they have some folks who think otherwise, however small the minority is anyways.

Radical Entertainment didn’t make stylized combat in Prototype? Did you even play the game.

Team Ninja is more than capable of making a better DmC than Ninja Theory with just combat mechanics alone. DmC at heart is a hack and slash and Team Ninja has proven capable of making a deep combat system for the hack and slash genre.

Beenox didn’t make a game like DMC? Have you played Wolverine? Lightning fast combo system in linear environments, much like Devil May Cry.

Insomniac hasn’t made a game similar to Devil May Cry sorta BUT they have proven capable of being diverse in making quality titles.

There was nothing unique, refreshing, or deep about Heavenly Swords combat. It was a cheap rip-off of God of War. They only made it to grab early sales from God of War fans before they get their God of War fix. It was a cheap tactic and they paid the price for it. As for Enslaved, that was worse than Heavenly Sword. Heavenly Sword was at least somewhat enjoyable while Enslaved was only fun for 2 out of the 8hrs you spend on it. Both of them do keep your attention with the visuals though.

If you want to have a discussion, relax and mature a little otherwise you are a waste of my time.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. spiderLAW

Im willing to give Ninja Theory a chance. I hope they prove me wrong when DmC releases. But they have nothing out now that would have me lend my faith to them.

  38. cerealguy

    @34
Obviously I don’t know, but I bet you will be another DMC2-like, NT doesn’t know the series.

Why make such a drastic change, knowing that fans will hate on the company, because they love the actual aspects of the franchise?

Seriously, if NT showed up Vergil or the original Dante kicking ass instead of this horrible change in Dante, the trailer would get so much positive reactions from the fans, there are so many people that want CAPCOM to bring Vergil back, it will surely boost their sales as they want it so badly. :)

  39. madnessHero

@25 it seems like I’ll be wasting my time as well

What do you classify emo as? if a character cries at one point in a game makes him emo? Dante’s persona was more unique and while it wasn’t that deep he was still awesome. Yeah he was a bit of an adrenaline junkie in 3 but his atitude was still same. In all the games except for 2 you see dante just messing with bosses giving one liners totally carefree etc. I never said nt WAS going to fuck it up I just said from my “viewpoint” (you might wanna look that word up) it’s not looking promising, but I’ll reserve judgement for when the game comes out. Yeah dante hanging in a room clearly looking like he’s been mentally tortured while being asked questions might not qualify as an experiment but it seems like it could be a possibility. I’ve done my homework, your just making crazy assumptions. In 3 and 4 dante clearly isn’t the only one fighting, there are multiple characters with different motives in dmc that interact with dante and thats good enough for me I don’t seem some external group jumping in outta nowhere like the government. If you threw the modern military in that would just hurt dmc even more.

I wouldn’t consider the fanbase as holy, but definitely not something to ignore. I understand capcom wants to appear to a broader audience, but it seems they’re willing to trade most of the old dmc fans for new ones, it just feels more like a betrayal, but betrayal is probably too strong of a word.

Hey guess why tomb raider is getting no out cry?? BECAUSE LARA CROFT STILL LOOKS LIKE AND ACTS(so far) LARA CROFT!!! jesus there was some crazy rocket science going on there phew glad thats over. Guess what else?? dante still looks like an anime character. Dante was also shown as a child having white hair THATS WHY I’m curious as to why the hell his hair is black. For calling dmc fans cry babys over a dev completely changing one of their favorite characters, thats pretty low and whats funny is, your more of a bitch than they are. True some of them might make more of a deal out of it, but that should fade in time if this game is going to be as good as you say it is.

On another note where did you hear that vergil was nero’s father??? I don’t remember hearing that in dmc 4. If you could send that particular interview that would be great. I enjoy video games that push themeselves but i just think DmC is being pushed down a bad path. DMC4 gave more questions than answers so why not focus more on that and maybe neros history. I just hope they throw vergil in there, I mean if you wanted to do another prequel why not show more of the conflict between dante and vergil? If you wanted more layers to dantes character what would be better than that?

I was saying trishes death wasn’t supposed to make you or anyone else cry, or at least thats how it came across. You know I liked bullet storm and just the different shit you could do. I wasn’t saying epic would be the best dev for dmc, but that I would probably find their version more amusing than ninja theorys.

I may be complaining over a lot of nt changes, but can you fault me for being mad about seeing (what i believe) to be the core of dmc being changed so drastically? I can guarentee you my viewpoint won’t change until they release more info on it. Theres only been ONE trailer so excuse if thats all I have to go on. If nt is as good as you say then I’m sure I’ll change my opinion and I’ll be more than happy to admit i was wrong if it turns out to be good. So far i just think this is going to be another bad attempt at westernizing a japanese series. I would also like to point your “truth” is compromised of 2 halfway decent games and ONE trailer..doesn’t seem to be too reliable but again we’ll see

  40. Rosseu

you know, that hairstyle doesn’t automatically make someone emo. Just look at Hope in the first half of FF13, that was one emo s.o.b. If they manage to make this a bit different/fresh than gow and the orig dmc and if there’s no “pay for content already in yo cd fool” then I’ll buy it.

    #40 4 years ago
  41. Rosseu

+they should add the original dante as costume for this dante, so fuckers and fanboys alike will shut their fucking mouths.

I’m always intrigued by each side and how we all argue about this game as fans. I love Devil May Cry, and yea I love Dante as a character.

Despite only being shown a teaser trailer, we’ve seen a lot change in that 1:30. Enemies are different, environment is different, gameplay seems different (morphing sword and slow guns) and most of all Dante seems different. The idea of a reboot is to reinvigorate the franchise, while retaining recognizable elements. If this was announced without the name DMC, I’d assume that it’d be a new IP. To be quite frank I don’t like the new Dante, mainly for his new look and personality that to be quite honest seems unwarranted and didn’t need to change.

Also, smoking? Really now? Seems almost like a big “Screw you” to Kamiya who specifically made Dante as a non-smoker. But I guess it’s still considered cool?

To me Ninja Theory doesn’t respect the franchise, nor the fans that love the franchise, which makes me dismayed. It’s as if they don’t know what aspects make Devil May Cry and why the fans love it. Am I afraid of change? No. Am I afraid of seeing one of my beloved franchise being perverted into something radically different? Yea, I am.

On top of that it’s clear that Capcom is taking a backseat for this one as illustrated by their decision to use the Unreal Engine rather than MT Framework.

Just my two cents though. You’re more then welcome to argue with me, but keep it civil.
