Sucker Punch unveils inFamous 2′s player creation suite

Sucker Punch’s “big secret” has come to light – inFamous 2 is to sport a suite of user-generated content tools. Get inside for shots and video.

Joystiq reports the tools, which allow users to create custom maps and share them, will go into public beta in April.

Details on how to join the beta will be released on March 14 through inFamous 2′s official website.

In a post on the US PS Blog, development director Chris Zimmerman elaborated.

Watch the level creation suite in action.

“We thought inFAMOUS 2 would be better if it didn’t end—if you never ran out of missions and mini-missions to play and things to do. So… we spent the last two years adding a User-Generated Content feature to the game,” he said.

Users creating missions will have access to all the game’s characters, props and enemies, allowing vanilla inFamous builds, but will also have the ability to make entirely different mission types.

“Wish [inFamous 2] had pure stealth missions? No problem, you can create stealth missions.

“Looking for more of a challenge? Try taking away some of Cole’s powers—see how the player does facing a platoon of Militia wielding only his Amp.

“Or add an old-school platforming challenge, or a race, or… I could go on all day. … Skeet shooting? No problem. Disc golf? Assuming you’re happy tossing around cars instead of Frisbees, sure. How about a mission where Zeke just tells you bad jokes until you shoot him? Um, yeah, you can do that, too.”

User-generated missions will appear in-game as they are created in the same way standard missions do, while popular and highly-rated missions will be featured by Sucker Punch and pushed out to all players.

With the addition of the new tool suite, Sony has folded inFamous 2 into the Play, Create, Share label, alongside LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers.

The tease

Sucker Punch had earlier teased a “big” announcement, with general chatter suggesting it could be inFamous 2-related, in a Facebook status message.

Today is very exciting day. We’ve been holding a big secret for the last two years and at GDC later today… We get to tell you all about it.

Fans hoped for an official reveal of Sly 4, but Sucker Punch burst that bubble immediately.

“OK. Everyone, no, a Sly 4 announcement is not the secret. Sorry to disappoint some,” a rep added in the comments.

Come on VG247. The announcement of an announcement is not news. Especially if it takes a few hours to be announced.

I wouldn’t mind split screen &/or online co-op, not sure how multiplayer would work, but co-op sure could.

Why would they have been holding MP for IF2 a secret for “2 years”? The sheer fact he mentions “2 years” makes me think its company related, not game related.

Maybe sony going to buy sucker punch?

In that case I assume that Sony have acquired them & it’s just been finalized, possibly a new IP but this seems like the wrong place to announce one.

It would be awesome if Sony bought Sucker Punch, that would be another string to the bow really.

Yeah, a new game announcement would be great!
And yeah, some type of co-op could be fun.

It’s tonight, PST. Everthing’s embargoed, though, aside from Crysis 2.

I think they will announce something for multiplayer component.

“We’ve been holding a big secret for the last two years”

Despite whatever stupor that people might have become enwrapped within, I strongly doubt that SP’s acquisition by Sony could have been kept that well under wraps. ;) What’s more likely is that they’re working on continuing/rebooting a key Sony franchise. My guess: Heavenly Sword.

In this day and age? The BIG SECRET will probably end up being some exlcusive DLC bullshit for Infamous 2.

Maybe they’re reviving an old Sony IP?
Maybe Jak?
I know ND made it, but they’ve moved onto new things now.

It seems to be inFamous 2 related, apparently, going by Twitter chatter. Pretty swish as well, supposedly.

As i said, it’s multiplayer. They talked about this before.

I can’t wait for this game. It is gameplay, graphically, story wise impressive. Very impressive.

first game was good with it’s flaws, second is going to be ridiculously epic.

@Pat, So tonight its only Crysis 2? I thought it was most of EA’s games except B3 which will be shown tommorow.

#23

Patrick Garratt
01/03/11, 5:43 pm

@22 – They’re all being shown tonight, but all the content’s embargoed. Crysis 2 is the only game with no embargo on it.

#24

So what is it then, Pat? Is it something interesting atleast?

#25

Johnny Cullen
01/03/11, 5:47 pm

@22 – No, The slate that we mentioned in the GDC preview makes up the event, but information on them is embargoed – or to put it an easier way, held back – until a pre-determined date by EA.

There’s no embargo on the Crysis 2 stuff, so we can report on that whenever we want. But the Battlefield 3 stuff is embargoed until tomorrow afternoon at 2pm GMT (9am EST).

Get my drift?

The big news is…..it’s also coming to Xbox 360 now? MS made an arrangement with SP…etc? Nah…that’s not gonna happen.

Not gonna get my hopes up though, these days big anouncements end up in people saying ‘ok…..’ or ‘meh…’

@29 Off the top of my head I don’t believe Sucker Punch own the IP, although a new multi-format game isn’t out of the question; they’re on good terms with Sony but they’re an independent studio, much like Insomniac. (At least at the time of writing.)

“Two years” would suggest the announcement of either a new game that’s well into production or company news that’s finally come to fruition. A feature announcement doesn’t really fit the wording. In fact it could feasibly not be an announcement at all: a post-mortem of a cancelled, unannounced game would qualify as a secret.

#31

Gekidami
01/03/11, 6:41 pm

^ Nope, Sony own the IP.

@ 31

Really? Cause recently i read something about Sucker Punch not belonging to anyone, and that it was kinda strange that Sony hadn’t bought them yet. And maybe that they would if inFamous 2 would be a huge success.

#35

Moonwalker1982

Sorry my bad….you said IP, not that they own Sucker Punch themselves.

#36

52pickup
01/03/11, 7:06 pm

@34 Sony can own the actual license and publishing rights for a game without owning the developer, which is the case with infamous.

Erthazus
01/03/11, 7:18 pm

You need all to shut your asses…

Because if you knew SP, you would stop saying shit like that.

It is an independent company but they are currently engaged in a multi-year, multi-title partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment America developing games for the PlayStation family of platforms.

The reason why they are independent it’s because if Playstation will die they can go somewhere else and not loosing some job.

and don’t try to compare Insomniac. They have absolutely different partnership.

How long has Sony been talking to developers about NGP? nearly 2 years?

Multiplayer in InFamous could be pretty cool though :D

‘Innovative-ish’ doesn’t inspire confidence.

It’s got to be multiplayer. Too many hints towards it.

I remember Naughty Dog saying something akin to ‘a secret for 2 years’ when they announced U2s MP.

if everything is embargoed why tell us that they are announcing something we won’t be able to know about? THAT IS COMPLETELY RETARDED DON’T YOU GUYS REMEMBER THAT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE DAY AFTER THE VGAS HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THAT?…………..NO

COOP\Multiplayer is welcome as long as it doesn’t take away from the single player experience.
